Since 1997, beginning with the call from Pope John Paul II, the World Day for Consecrated Life has been observed throughout the universal Church. It is always celebrated on the Feast of the Presentation, February 2, if this day falls on a Sunday, otherwise on the Sunday following. This year WDCL is observed on February 4. The readings for this Fifth Sunday of Ordinary Time are most appropriate.
We need to remember the faithful this day about the role of consecrated life, especially as we experience their vocation in the Diocese of Beaumont, and the various ways in which religious sisters, nuns, brothers, religious priests and monks answer God’s call to minister to God’s people.
St. Scholastica, sister of St. Benedict, consecrated her life to God from her earliest youth. She founded and governed a monastery of nuns, about five miles from that of St. Benedict, who, it appears, also directed his sister and her nuns. On one of their visits, St. Scholastica begged her brother to remain until the next day. St. Benedict refused to spend the night outside his monastery. She had recourse to prayer and a furious thunder-storm burst so that neither St. Bene-dict nor any of his companions could re-turn home. They spent the night in spiritu-al conferences. The next morning they parted to meet no more on earth. Three days later St. Scholastica died, and her holy brother beheld her soul in a vision as it ascended into heaven. He sent his brethren to bring her body to his monas-tery and laid it in the tomb he had pre-pared for himself. She died about the year 543, and St. Benedict followed her soon after. Her feast day is February 10th.
