While I’m not rejoicing that it came to this, I am rejoicing that people are upset. After all, losing something you love should be a painful process. So, if you’re unaffected by this step, you probably need to reevaluate your relationship with Jesus Christ. I do wish to add some of my thoughts to this most dramatic turn of events. First of all, there is a herd mentality like I’ve never seen before. Back when I lived in Wynot, there was a sheep rancher who lived across the street from the rectory (yes, literally across the street). Since I would drive by this every day, I noticed just how easily spooked sheep were. Anything, any little uncertainty, seemed to drive them in wild directions with each individual sheep fighting the others to get out from in front of the perceived danger. When Adam Silver, the NBA commissioner suspended his league, I was reminded of this phenomenon. Now, don’t misunderstand. I don’t know how much of this fear is based in reality. I guess I’m not quite sure how the potential loss of life by COVID19 is intolerable while killing 3,000 babies a day is fine. But, that’s above my paygrade. What I do know is that, since then, people, much like the sheep I used to live by, have been falling all over themselves to postpone, cancel or close whatever they can. In the light of the uncertainty around the virus, as well as in the face of this peer pressure and pressure from the government, I can certainly understand why our Archbishop decided to suspend public Masses. He’s in an extraordinarily difficult situation and needs our prayers and support. Like every trial, this one provides us with tremendous opportunities. First, it serves as a reminder that the Mass is a gift and not an entitlement. Much like what happens when a loved one dies suddenly, when the Mass is taken away from us suddenly we recognize just how much we’ve taken it for granted. Maybe now is the time to help us grow in our gratitude for this greatest of all possible gifts. The second opportunity we have is down a different path of holiness. Jesus’ life demonstrates that holiness is found in obedience…the setting aside of our will to do the will of another. Jesus demonstrates this virtue most perfectly when He accepts the unjust sentence of death from Pontius Pilate without whining or complaining. Jesus knows that Pilate, as the authority God permitted to be in charge, represents the opportunity to follow God’s will by obeying that authority. Even when this authority is clearly wrong, when God’s will is done through Jesus’ obedience, the result is the Resurrection! Something similar is available to us. I would hope none of us like the archbishop’s decision, even if we understand and agree with it. Nevertheless, it allows us a path to holiness by following Jesus in our obedience. It may not be pleasant or likeable, but in it we do fulfill the petition in the Lord’s Prayer…”Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” Blessings, 4TH SUNDAY OF LENT· March 22, 2020 SUNDAY, MARCH 29 1st Reading: Ez 37:12-1 Resp. WHAT IS A SPIRITUAL COMMUNION AND HOW DO I MAKE ONE?: A spiritual communion is a personal devo$onal that anyone can pray at any $me to express their
desire to receive Holy Communion at that moment, but in which circumstances impede them from actually receiving Holy Communion. When you pray a spiritual communion, your
soul receives grace to the degree that you have true hunger for the Holy Eucharist.

! ! ! IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING MASSES: ! ! ! Effective immediately, all public Masses and communal celebrations (e.g. stations) or any other gatherings in the church are indefinitely suspended, with the exception of Adoration. Daily Mass schedules will be maintained and offered by the priests privately. Bells will be rung during the consecration to alert those wishing to make a spiritual communion at that time. On the weekend one Mass will be offered (privately) in each church for the people of the cluster during these difficult times. Churches will be open as normal for individuals to come and pray. Adoration will continue (and perhaps even extend!!) as we need prayers since they are our ultimate weapon. Masses from St. Francis will be live streamed on their Facebook page so anyone can participate spiritually. Confessions will be heard during the normal schedule as well as additional times that will be announced. Also, PRE is suspended indefinitely at this time.
Please refer to “St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Humphrey” on Facebook for any breaking information.
Prayer of Spiritual Communion: My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment
receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself
wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.
