JUNE 26th, 2016 “I’ve got a ton of paperwork facing me back at the office.” “He’s a zillionaire with no money worries.” “It was hot as hell today at the ball-park.” We know not to take statements like these literally. They, and a raft of others like them, are exaggerations meant to make a point in conver-sation. All of us make them without a second thought in the belief that they will help us make our point more forcefully. A message with punch in it. Bear in mind that the language Jesus spoke in His earthly life had no superlative degree, as English does. So Jesus exaggerates as He lays out the main condition for being His disciple. Just listen again to His responses. “I have nowhere to rest My head.” “Let the dead bury the dead.” “Nobody using a plow should ever look back.” Jesus would have had no disciples at all if people took those answers literally. But His meaning is clear nonetheless. Being a disciple, as we well know all these centuries lat-er, demands being open to a radical change in our thinking from whatever philosophy happens to hold sway at a particular time and place. Our lifestyle is likely to be different from others as an outward expression of this mindset. Besides, it often takes a giant leap of faith into the unknown on our part. What makes that ultimately possi-ble, of course, is love. In our case, that is love for a person, not for a philosophical principle. On one level, we can compare this love to that in a happy marriage. When a man and woman give their “yes” to each other for life, they do so with no idea of what’s ahead for them or how it will all turn out. There are no guarantees. Ex-cept for their trust in each other and deep love, the risk would be overwhelming. The same could be said for persons who answer the Lord’s call to priestly or religious vocation. Trust and love are paramount. All this is equally true for those who commit to the Christian way of life. Following Jesus does not give one an address on “Easy Street.” Once we set out to live our decision, we know that looking back with any regret is counterproduc-tive. Why would a person be tempted to do so? Chiefly because Satan, our number one ene-my, does not want us united to Christ. He is a highly skilled salesman who knows our weak-nesses better than we do. When we slip up by sinning, he is delighted. But when we come to our senses and turn back to God it’s something like a new lease on life. We are at peace. At this time of year, when gardening is at its peak, here’s a bit of true wisdom: “A person’s character and his/her garden both reflect the amount of weeding that was done during the growing season.” And that’s no exaggeration!

World Youth Day
Scholarship Opportunity: With your help, DAVID CROWELL, from our parish will travel
to World Youth Day this Summer.
An opportunity has been offered to David Crowell, a youth
from our parish to attend this amazing event with other Cath-
olic youth/youth adults around the world. In order to make
this happen, we are asking for your support. The Charitable
Exchange, the company offering this opportunity, is offering
to match any donations dollar for dollar. Please be assured
that 100% of all contributions are being used for this oppor-
tunity. The TCE supports many charitable organizations that
you may be familiar with. Please go
to :http:\\www.charitableexchange.org
and look for Phila. Parishes and proceed to make
your contribution.
Please help our parish and David, participate in
this wonderful opportunity.

Helping Other People
in Emergencies
The SFDS HOPE Outreach organization was founded to
serve the needs of our parishioners. Those needs might
include:
transportation to Church
transportation to a local appointment
help with shopping or other errands
visiting the elderly, shut-ins or sick
helping our deployed military families
The Hope mission continues to provide help and sup-
port to our parish community in their time of need.
The Gift Card Program will remain in place, as we transition to a new Catholic School Education model. Cards are available after the Vigil and Sun-day Masses and at the Rectory during the week.
