THE SKINNY THE COACHES ABOUT ST. FRANCIS COLLEGE
St. Francis College was founded in 1859 as St. Francis Academy by a group of newly arrived Franciscan Brothers from Ireland. The Brother’s mission was to educate young men from working-class families in the Brooklyn Diocese. St. Francis Academy provided a sound education with a rigorous curriculum and personal support, all for a modest tui on, characteris cs that endure today.
In 1884, St. Francis College received its Charter from New York State establishing a literary college which could award diplomas, honors, and degrees. In 1926, St. Francis College built a larger campus near its original site in Cobble Hill, where it remained un l the 1960s when the College relocated to its current site on Remsen Street in Brooklyn Heights. The new loca on and opening the College’s doors up to women for the fi rst me led to an infl ux of students from all fi ve boroughs of New York City and beyond, doubling the student popula on.
The cornerstone of the St. Francis College experience is academics. All students complete a core curriculum that off ers a founda on for intellectual and professional growth; once completed, they choose from one of 74 majors, many in the liberal arts and others geared to specific professions, included a five year combined Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in Accounting. An honors program serves students of high achievement and a broad scholarship program supports those who are likely to perform well academically.
An NCAA-Division I ins tu on, St. Francis College off ers students the opportunity to play for any of 19 varsity men’s and women’s athletic teams, including its men’s basketball team, whose program is among the oldest in New York City. Teams compete in many well-known New York City venues such as the USTA Na onal Tennis Center, home of the U.S. Open, Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island and Aviator Sports at Floyd Bennett Field.
Today, first-generation college-goers and students of all backgrounds are among St. Francis College’s diverse popula on. Its Catholic-Franciscan heritage, central to life at the College, allows faculty and administrators to embrace, support, and encourage all students as they pursue fulfi llment of their dreams.

HEAD COACH BRENDA MILANO
Brenda Milano enters her eighth season as head coach of
the St. Francis College women’s basketball program. In her
fi rst season, she led the 2003-2004 Terriers to an eight win
season. The next season, the wins steadily increased to ten,
while guiding St. Francis to the 2005 Northeast Conference
Quarterfi nals. It was the Terriers fi rst appearance since
1999.
Milano’s coaching style helped transform a new atmosphere
in Brooklyn Heights as the 2006-07 season proved to be a
year to remember. Milano’s bunch recorded a 13-18 overall
record, her most successful season to date. St. Francis would
enter the Northeast Conference Tournament as the eight
seed, taking on the Long Island University Blackbirds, the
tournaments top seed. The Terriers would pull out the upset,
as it was the fi rst me that the school has qualifi ed for the
semi-fi nals as well as being the only # 8 seed to upset the #
1 seed in Northeast Conference Tournament history.
Despite having three starters on the injured list, the 2007-
08 Terriers were resilient and made it back to Northeast
Conference tournament. In 2009-10, Milano was able to
achieve personal milestones in her coaching career. The
Terriers ended a three-year drought in the Ba le of Brooklyn
as they defeated Long Island University, giving Milano her
35th Northeast Conference victory. A month later, with a last
second free-throw, St. Francis would stun 2008 Northeast
Conference Champions, Robert Morris, giving Coach Milano
her 50th career victory, the most wins by a St. Francis College
women’s head coach.
Milano gained her early coaching experience at Northeastern
University as a graduate assistant and at Seton Hall University
where she earned a master’s degree in sports management.
Before coaching, Milano spent me at Integrated Sports
Interna onal, sports marke ng fi rm where she put to work
her B.S. in marke ng from Wagner College (1995). In 1998,
In recogni on of her accolades at Wagner, Director of
Athle cs Walt Hameline announced that Milano (Class of
1995) enters the school’s Hall of Fame in her fi rst year of
eligibility. Milano was a four-year stalwart on the women’s
basketball teams of the early 1990s. She averaged 12.5 ppg,
5.0 rpg and 4.5 apg for her career and was named to the
NEC Second Team as a sophomore and to the All-Newcomer
team as a freshman before being beset by injuries. Milano
scored 1,046 points despite playing just 84 career games
and graduated as the 12th-highest scorer in school history
(currently 21st). She also ranks among the program leaders
in assists (382) (6th) and steals (148) (8th). Milano was also
a two-year captain and Team MVP.
Milano has high expecta ons for her team in 2010-2011.
This year’s team is looking to forget last season’s record
and open with a fresh new outlook and demeanor. With
the addi on of several exci ng newcomers along with the
majority of last year’s squad coming back, Coach Milano
and her staff believe that they can vie for a Northeast
