“John answered them all, „I baptize you with water; but he who is mightier than I is coming…he will baptize you with the
Holy Spirit... ‟” (Luke 3:16) The United States Catholic Catechism for Adults states that “Jesus‟ immersion in the water is a sign for all human beings of the need to die to themselves to do God‟s will.” In other
words, as baptized Catholics there is only one simple gift that we need to give to Jesus. The only gift God wants is a com‐plete offering of ourselves. Once we surrender ourselves to God in this way, we will know in our hearts what else God
might call us to do.

BAPISM OF THE LORD Life Implications
This description of the consequences of the baptism of Jesus must not be seen simply as something that hap‐pened to Jesus alone. For in our own baptism we have become part of the new creation and God speaks to us also with those same loving and empowering words that he spoke to Jesus (adapted to our situation): “You are my
beloved child; I love you very much.” With these divine words we are truly joined to the person and the mission of Jesus. The fact that we cannot hear these words in a conscious way when we are baptized as infants makes it all the more important that we learn how to listen as we grow older and become more aware of the presence of
God. In fact, there is nothing that we can do during our lives that is more important than listening as God tells us, in our hearts and souls, that we are his beloved and cher‐ished children. We are bombarded constantly by the words of our busy world and some of them may be impor‐tant, but none of these human words can possibly be as important in our lives as the words of God spoken to us in our baptism. There can be no doubt that Jesus heard these words of his heavenly Father all during his ministry. When he went aside to pray, he would be comforted and reassured and strengthened by these loving words. We too would do well to set aside some time each day to listen as God whis‐pers to us that we are so loved that we do not ever need to be afraid. As we do that, we enter into the full meaning and power of our baptism and we find the secret of living in gratitude and hope, as we prepare for resurrection glory.

Cardinal George to Make Presentation on RELIGIOUS FREEDOM
Cardinal George has begun a series of talks on religious freedom in each of the vicariates. Cardinal George will engage parishioners about the importance of the religious freedom issues with respect to the new mandates and regulat ions surrounding the health care laws.

Illinois Women Religious Against Human Trafficking January is National Human Trafficking Prevention Month
January is National Human Trafficking Prevention Month and we invite you to take part in this month by learning more about this issue, praying for
the victims of human trafficking and engaging in some type of action. The United Nations currently estimates human trafficking to be the fastest growing criminal enterprise in the world, second only to drug trafficking in terms of illicit money. Experts believe that 27 million people around the world live in slavery, and between 14‐17,000 people are brought to the United States for exploitation as domestic servants, restaurant workers, janitors, agricultural workers, seam‐stresses, factory workers or in the commercial sex trade. Runaway children in the United States are at high risk to become part of this devastating system.
Prayer to End Human Trafficking
Loving and compassionate God, we pray for the release of the millions of innocent children, teenagers, women and men who have been drawn into prostitution, sweatshops and domestic servitude by human trafficking. Increase our awareness of this terrible injustice. May the compassion‐ate people who seek to help these victims be blessed in their efforts to free them from captivity and to provide
safe shelters for them. We confidently ask all this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Human trafficking is a modern‐day form of slavery. Vic‐tims of human trafficking are subjected to force, fraud, or coercion, for the purpose of sexual exploitation or forced labor. Victims are young children, teenagers, men and women. Trafficking is a federal crime but its very nature makes it difficult to detect. NATIONAL VOCATION AWARENESS WEEK January 13‐19, 2013
An annual week‐long celebration of the Catholic Church in
the United States dedicated to pro‐mote vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and consecrated life through prayer and education, and to renew our prayers and support for those who are considering one of these particular vocations. NVAW began in 1976 when the U. S. bishops designated the 28th Sunday of the year for NVAW. In 1997, this celebra‐tion was moved to coincide with the
Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, which falls on January 13 in 2013. . In today’s powerful Gospel, God speaks to Jesus, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” Is God reveal‐ing himself to you through a vocation to the priesthood or religious life? The Rising Stars Theatre Co. an‐nounces open auditions for our spring musical "The Wizard of Oz". Seeking a large cast of chil‐
dren, teens and adults ages 8 and up. Auditions held at 2559 N. Sayre, Chicago. Auditions are: Children 8‐12 years old‐ Saturday January 26 from 9am‐11am. Teens and adults‐ages 13 and up: Saturday January 26 from noon‐2pm and Sunday January 27 from 2pm‐6pm. No appoint‐ment needed. All roles open. No pay. Lighting Up the City for Peace
AN INITIATIVE THAT HONORS DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.
JANUARY 13 – 21, 2013
The buildings in downtown Chicago often light up various colors to show support for and represent different issues and seasons. This has been successful in raising consciousness. Beginning January 13 through January 21, the Building Own‐ers and Managers of Chicago (BOMA/Chicago) members have agreed to encourage buildings to light their buildings blue for peace in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birth‐day. Blue is the color the United Nations has chosen to sym‐bolize peace and commonly referred to as a symbol of peace. Dr. King was certainly a prophetic voice for peace and non‐violence. As we are reminded visually by the blue lights dur‐ing this time let’s, as Chicagoans, pledge ourselves to work for peace in our schools, places of worship, blocks, neighbor‐hoods, cities and world. With all the violence seen in our country and in our city, we have never more needed the gift of PEACE and the call to be PeaceMakers. Rev. Michael L. M ający już ponad stuletnią tradycję Tydzień Modlitw o Jedność Chrześcijan stał się cyklicznym świętem ekumenizmu. Co roku między 18 a 25 stycznia, czyli między dawnym świętem katedry św. Piotra a świętem nawrócenia św. Pawła, chrześcijanie różnych wyznań spotykają się na całym świecie na ekumenicznych nabożeństwach,
modlitwach, konferencjach, koncertach i innych spotkaniach.
Serdecznie zapraszamy na Mszę św. oraz Nabożeństwo Ekumeniczne z modlitwą o jedność chrześcijan do naszego kościoła. Modlitwa będzie w języku polskim i angielskim.

Andrzeja Wypycha) Ludzie należący do innych wspólnot chrześcijańskich, duchowni tych wspólnot, a nawet ich biskupi, nie mają pełnego uczestnictwa w Kościele Chrystusowym, bo nie uznają wszystkich sakramentów, ustanowionych przez Chrystusa i nie uznają widzialnej głowy Kościoła, papieża, a zatem nie zachowują jedności wiary. Dotyczy to także biskupów w innych kościołach apostolskich. Dla przykładu prawosławnych oraz biskupów tzw. kościołów starokatolickich. Kościół katolicki jest zatem „wspólnotą wspólnot”, z widzialną głową – papieżem, podzielony na mniejsze wspólnoty terytorialne, czyli diecezje i parafie, z biskupami w diecezji oraz proboszczami, którzy są pomocnikami biskupów w najmniejszych wspólnotach Kościoła, jakimi są parafie. Biskupi, według nauki II Soboru Watykańskiego, nie są „terenowymi wikariuszami papieża”, ale są „pełnoprawnymi wikariuszami Chrystusa.” To biskupom, w konkretnej sytuacji Kościoła, należy się posłuszeństwo wiary. Jak powiedział Pan Jezus: „Kto was słucha, Mnie słucha, a kto wami gardzi Mną gardzi, lecz kto Mną gardzi, gardzi Tym, który mnie posłał” (Łk 10,14). Katolicy, którzy tego posłuszeństwa w wierze odmawiają, popełniają grzech przeciwko jedności wyznawanej wiary, a przez to stawiają się poza prawdziwą wspólnotą Kościoła katolickiego. Biskup, z mandatu Chrystusa, jest pasterzem, odpowiedzialnym za zbawienie swojej owczarni i ma obowiązek upominania, jeżeli widzi, że wierni błądzą. Kościół, jako wspólnota Jezusa Chrystusa, realizuje się w konkretnej przestrzeni i czasie, poprzez diecezje. W naszej rzeczywistości, dzieje się to w przestrzeni Kościoła Chicago, któremu przewodzi kardynał Franciszek George. W wykonaniu władzy pasterskiej pomagają mu biskupi pomocniczy Archidiecezji Chicago. Wśród nich jestem ja, biskup Andrzej Wypych. Z polecenia i
mandatu kardynała Franciszka George’a jestem odpowiedzialny za wikariat V Archidiecezji Chicago oraz za duszpasterstwo polonijne, które jest realizowane w ramach programu duszpasterskiego
całej archidiecezji. Jako Polacy, z racji naszej kulturowej i językowej przynależności narodowej, mamy
specjalny przywilej w kościele w Chicago, że możemy korzystać z naszych darów wiary, kultury i języka w budowaniu wspólnoty Kościoła lokalnego. Jesteśmy wdzięczni za rozpoznanie naszej grupy etnicznej przez obecnego pasterza, który w sposób szczególny troszczy się o nas, przez ustanowienie swoim delegatem Biskupa, znającego realia wiary, kultury i języka Polonii. Zatem winniśmy ze wszystkich sił budować wspólnotę Kościoła Jezusa Chrystusa tu w Chicago, unikając wszystkiego, co sprzeciwia się jedności i wzrostowi miłości, aby kiedy przyjdzie Pan nasz Jezus

Miłosierdzie Boże w Imieniu Jezus i Ofiarowaniu Pana Jezusa
w Świątyni.
„Przynieśli Je (Dzieciątko Jezus) do Jeruzalem ... by złożyć ofiarę”
(Łk. 2,22 i 24).
Nadane przy obrzezaniu Dziecięcia hebrajskie Imię „Jezus” znaczy po polsku „Zbawiciel” – „Bóg jest zbawieniem”. Wyraża ono wielkość i majestat Tego, który je nosi. Wielkość i majestat ujawniają się w tym, że w niebie zadośćczyni sprawiedliwości Bożej i zamienia należne nam kary za grzechy na nieskończone Miłosierdzie Boże w przebaczeniu, że na ziemi czyni cuda i uświęca wybranych, a nawet w piekle trzyma na wodzy złość szatanów. Imię Jezus oznacza Twórcę świata wyższego, świata nadprzyrodzonego, świata łaski i prawdziwego pokoju. Ono przypomina nam Miłosierdzie Boże złączone ze sprawiedliwością, doskonałość Boga – Człowieka, wielkość zniżającą się dobrowolnie do
nędzy ludzkiej, Syna poświęconego przez Ojca na wiecznego Arcykapłana, Nauczyciela i Króla nieśmiertelnego wszystkich wieków. Jak latorośl ze szczepu winnego, tak dusza czerpie życie nadprzyrodzone z Jezusa; w Nim skrucha dostępuje Miłosierdzia, modlitwa – wysłuchania, a najdrobniejsze uczynki – zasługę na wieczną nagrodę. To Imię osiąga swój skutek w kościołach i szpitalach, w więzieniach i na okrętach, wśród huku dział wojennych, stuku warsztatów i fabryk, a nawet na szafotach. Największe jednak sprowadza błogosławieństwo, jeśli wypiszemy Je na sercach naszych. Ochoczo i miłosiernie składa Pan Jezus z siebie pierwszą ofiarę przy obrzezaniu i ofiarowaniu. Takiej ofiary jeszcze nigdy w tej świątyni nie złożono. Blask jej napełnia niebo i ziemię. Na jej widok wszystko zadrgało przeczuciem czegoś bardzo wielkiego. Ofiarowanie w świątyni było pierwszym zetknięciem się Pana Jezusa z całym ludem izraelskim, który występuje tu w osobach swoich zastępców. Najpierw spotyka się z kapłaństwem Starego Zakonu, uznaje je, staje się jemu poddany, składa mu okup, dozwala, aby Ci kapłani ofiarowali Go Ojcu własnoręcznie i otrzymuje od nich błogosławieństwo. Obecnie jest to spotkanie pokojowe, ale z czasem będzie inaczej, po latach każą Go związać i zażądać nań śmierci. Jezus wiedział o przyszłym stosunku kapłanów do Niego, widział w duchu przyszłą walkę z nimi w tej samej świątyni, widział jej koniec na Golgocie, a jednak z Miłosierdzia swego przed nią się nie cofnął. Wraz z Synem ofiaruje się Bogu Matka. Usłyszała zapowiedź o mieczu, który przeszyje Jej Serce, a przez zasłonę trzydziestu lat w Nazarecie jasno ujrzała krzyż, przygotowany dla Jezusa. Mimo to nie traci spokoju i pogody ducha, zgadza się ze wszystkim, co Ją czeka, widząc w tym wolę Bożą i powtarzając słowa, wypowiedziane przy zwiastowaniu: „Otom ja służebnica Pańska, niechaj mi się stanie według słowa twego”. Przy ofiarowaniu na czole Maryi jaśnieje blask niepokalaności, z oczu promienieje dziewictwo, na ręku piastuje Ona Boskie Dzieciątko, a mimo wszystko przychodzi pokorna, by się oczyścić i złożyć parę synogarlic w ofierze. Jakżeż powinniśmy my grzeszni dbać o czystość duszy i idąc za wzorem Jej pokory uciekać się do oczyszczania się w Sakramencie Pokuty.

On this Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, I hate to admit that I cannot recall much about my children’s baptisms. Accordingly, I asked my wife just now, and her memory is hazy as well. We both recall that Gail made our daughter Sarah’s baptismal gown, and Gail remembers that we borrowed the suit her brother and his wife used for their firstborn when it came time for our son Paul to go under the water. I also remember that we had guests over to the house both times, which prompts me to recall an old joke. Before performing a baptism, the priest approaches the young dad saying, “Baptism’s a serious step. Are you prepared for it?" The father replies, "I think so. My wife has made appetizers and we hired a caterer to provide food for our guests.” The priest counters, "I don't mean that. I mean, are you prepared spiritually?" The dad answers, “I've got a keg of beer and three or four bottles of wine…” Of course baptism is a serious step and of course it’s no joke. I say this in part because of what the Catechism of the Catholic Church tells us about it: “Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit…and the door which gives access to the other sacraments.” I say this in part because Jesus allowed himself to be baptized by John as we read in today’s Gospel: “After all the people had been baptized and Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a
voice came from heaven, ‘You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.’” And I say this mostly because baptism not only marks the beginning of Christ’s public ministry, it is also our Lord’s final direction to his disciples after the Resurrection: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit…” We are blessed to have been born and raised Catholic‐‐or to have come into the faith at some later time‐‐and at the Easter Vigil each year, we are invited to renew our Baptismal promises. “Do you reject Satan?” the priest asks. “I do,” we respond. “And all his works?” the priest asks. “I do,” we respond. “And all his empty promises?” the priest asks. “I do,” we respond. We then go on to confirm our belief in God the Father, Jesus the Christ, the Holy Spirit, and all the fundamental tenets of our faith. But while we repeat these promises yearly, we are called to live them daily, and it’s no easy thing. “This is the work of God,” Jesus tells us, “that you believe in the one he sent.” Well, if we profess to believe in Jesus‐‐to really believe in him‐‐then we must live the life he taught us to live. “Are you prepared spiritually?” the priest asks the young dad on the occasion of his child’s baptism. As we recall our Lord’s baptism this day and perhaps reflect upon our own, we might each ask ourselves the very same question. And if we don’t like the answer, let’s rejoice in the New Year, the clean slate, the opportunity to put things right.

For Children: a pre-Baptism class is required for Baptism of the first child. Classes are held in English on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30PM in the Church, and in Polish on the last Tuesday of each month at 7:30PM in the Church. Following registration, the sacrament of Baptism is celebrated in English on the second Saturday each month at 6:00PM and on the fourth Sunday of the month at the 12:30PM Mass. The sacrament of Baptism is celebrated in Polish on the first Saturday of the month at 6:00PM and on the third Sunday of the month at the 3:00PM Mass.
