Second Collections: This Week: Parish Emergency Fund

THE FIRST RELATIONSHIP Our lives are networks of relationships, which can change over the course of time. We are challenged in the changes to keep Christ as our primary rela-tionship.

INSIDE THE READINGS The stories of the prophets Elijah and Elisha form a cycle of stories incorporated within First and Sec-ond Kings. As Elijah’s protégé, Elisha accomplishes similar miracles. But today’s first reading does not focus on Elisha’s prophetic abilities (“This time next year you will be cradling a baby son,” v. 16) as much as it portrays the receptivity and hospitality of the Gentile Shunammite woman and her husband (“Let us arrange a little room on the roof,” v. 10). The woman’s kindness to Elisha is repaid when she bears a son (v. 17), and later Elisha raises the child from the dead (vv. 32–35).

The belief that God granted salvation despite our “wickedness” may have led some Roman Chris-tians to continue in sinful behavior (Romans 3:5–8). In two verses preceding today’s second reading, Paul poses a question, “Shall we persist in sin that grace may abound?” (Romans 6:1). This confronta-tional question sets up Paul’s answer. Those who have been baptized into Christ’s death have died to sin. If the wages of sin are death, and Christ has been raised from the dead, then all who have been baptized in Christ will also be raised to new life with God. The new life precludes sin.

The Gospel reading continues the missionary dis-course (Matthew 10:5–42) addressed to Jesus’ dis-ciples—and indirectly to Matthew’s church commu-nity. Total renunciation of familial responsibilities and a willingness to take up the cross and follow Jesus are expectations of a true disciple. But Jesus also states expectations and promises rewards for those who receive the disciples. Scholars suggest that in these verses Matthew is directing his own community to respond with hospitality and receptiv-ity to God’s disciples, prophets, holy people, and “little ones” who come in the name of the Lord. Sim-ilarly the Didache, an early Christian manual (late first century to early second century), described the expectations and limits of hospitality for wandering prophets.

NURSES CORNER July, 2017

Dehydration can occur quickly without any warning. Children are at greater risk than adults because their fluid volume is smaller and they weigh less. The smallest children are not able to communicate possible distress, so parents must be on the lookout for any signs that dehydration is near. If a child has diarrhea, vomits for more than eight hours, is irritable or disoriented, take immediate action. Give small amounts of water frequently. An over the counter supplement such as Pedialyte can also help. Ensuring children get enough water, especially during the hot summer months, will allow them to thrive and be safe.

Floral Designers are needed for the St. Elizabeth floral ministry. No experience necessary. We welcome anyone willing to give some time to the parish. We provide on the job training. Baptism This Sacrament of initiation and welcome into our faith-community may be celebrated during a weekend mass or at 1:00 P.M. on the second and fourth Sunday of the month. A Baptism class is held on the 3rd Sunday of every other month at 1:00 P.M. in the Parish Center and is attended prior to the baptism of your first child. You may attend before your child is born, and call the office to register.

Eucharist “Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoev-er believes in me will never thirst.’” John 6:35 Thus in the Eucharistic Liturgy we are joined with Christ on the altar of the cross and at the table of the upper room. The Sacrament can be re-ceived daily at Mass or delivered to the homebound upon request.

SACRAMENTS

Confirmation In the Sacrament of Confirma-tion, the baptized person is “sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit” and is strengthened for service to the Body of Christ.

Penance The Sacrament of Penance is an experience of the gift of God’s boundless mercy. Time for con-fession is offered every Saturday afternoon from 3:30-4:30 P.M. in our Church, Tuesday evenings from 7:00-8:30 P.M. at St. Jo-seph’s in Brookfield, and on Thursday evenings from 7:00-8:30 P.M. at Sacred Heart in Danbury.

Anointing of the Sick Jesus came to heal the whole per-son, body and soul. If you would like to have one of our priests or deacons visit you, a relative, or a friend in the hospital, rehabilita-tion facility, or at home, please call the parish office.

Holy Matrimony The Marriage covenant refers to the relationship between the hus-band and wife, a permanent union of persons capable of knowing and loving each other and God. It is also a liturgical act and Catho-lics are urged to celebrate their marriage within the Eucharistic Liturgy. Couples are encouraged to make arrangements at least 6 months prior to the wedding. At-tendance at the Diocesan Mar-riage Preparation Program or Engaged Encounter is mandato-ry. Please call the office for an appointment to begin planning.

Holy Orders Ordination to the priesthood is always a call and a gift from God. Those who seek priesthood re-spond generously to God’s call using the words of the prophet, “here I am, send me” (Is 6:8). The seven sacraments are efficacious signs of grace, instituted by Christ and entrusted to the Church, by which divine life is dispensed to us. The visible rites by which the sacraments are celebrated signify and make present the graces proper to each sacrament. They bear fruit in those who receive them with the required dispositions. Any adult wishing to learn more about the Sacraments and be in communion with our Catholic Church is invited to call our office and par-ticipate in our RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) program.
