Saint Paul was metaphorically raised from the dead when he experienced the conversion and call from God that he describes in today’s second reading. What are Christians called to do today? We may not be able to raise the dead, but perhaps we can rekindle hope for a single parent. We may not be able to convert a persecutor like Paul, but if we speak the gospel openly and gently with our lives, we might touch a life with the Good News. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. HOPE AND LIFE Today’s readings tell the story of two widows. The first reading relates the plight of the widow with

whom the prophet Elijah stayed; the Gospel tells about the widow of Nain. In each story, the widow’s only

son had died. For people who lived in those cultures, the son was the only support of a widow, and the

carrying on of the family name by the son was equal to immortality. A widow whose only son has died

could lose all hope.

Elijah and Jesus are the restorers of hope; they bring the sons back to life. Saint Paul was

metaphorically raised from the dead when he experienced the conversion and call from God that he

describes in today’s second reading.

What are Christians called to do today? We may not be able to raise the dead, but perhaps we can

rekindle hope for a single parent. We may not be able to convert a persecutor like Paul, but if we speak the

gospel openly and gently with our lives, we might touch a life with the Good News.

Catherine Spalding, Ruth Burns, Lloyd Haydon, &

Rita Edelen.

Our church always prays for and cares for

our sick sisters and brothers at home, in

hospitals, and in nursing homes. If any

who are sick want to ask in faith for the

church’s prayers, the Sacrament of the Sick

or Holy Communion, please do not hesitate

to call our parish office to let Fr. Pepper

and our ministers to the sick and

homebound know your need. You are

always in our hearts, minds and prayers

as we celebrate the Eucharist at St.

Dominic.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Unless Professor Einstein’s theory of relativity

can be translated into any useful kind of time-travel,

most of our clues about life in the early church will

have to come from ancient letters and ancient prayer

texts. A prayer text from a dusty library may yield, for

example, an understanding of what “presbyters”

actually did. We have such a prayer from the early

third century from the hand of Hippolytus of Rome.

While our modern prayers derive a great deal from his,

some of the practices of the ancient church have fallen

away. In his day, bishops were chosen by the people,

and the other bishops merely consented. Presbyters, by

contrast, seem to have been chosen by the bishops.

This makes sense, since it allowed the bishops to

hand-pick their most trusted advisers.

It seems that bishops were at first reluctant to

share their presiding at the Eucharist with presbyters.

In fact, by the time of the fourth-century church’s

growth spurt in Rome, the bishop sent deacons out

with fragments of the host from his Eucharist to drop

into the chalices of the presbyters at the outlying

eucharistic celebrations. We still have a vestige of this

fermentum in the Mass today, a reminder of the early

bishops’ desire to give a powerful sign of the unity of

all celebrations of the Eucharist with their ministry,

and a clue to their reluctance to delegate a sacramental

ministry to the presbyters. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S.

MENTIONS, MEETINGS, EVENTS & REMINDERS Special Thanks: The family of Danny Medley would like to thank everyone from St. Dominic for all the prayers, cards, and support during this difficult time. Thanks to Fr. Pepper, the choir, the lectors, the Eucharistic ministers, and servers who made the funeral mass so beautiful. A special thanks to Steve Hale for the solo; I truly appreciated it. Thank you to the Bereavement Committee for the excellent meal after the service. ~Sharon Medley & Family Year of Mercy: Those Who are Suffering from Illness or Disabilities (June): During this Year of Mercy, Pope Francis has established a special Jubilee observance for the sick and those with disabilities on June 10-12. In the Scriptures, we witness Jesus healing the sick, restoring sight to the blind, and reaching out to those with difficulties. Following His example, we as disciples seek to reach out and become messengers of healing for those who are suffering, both physically and emotionally. In speaking to those who have illness or disabilities during a visit to the Little House of Divine Providence in Turin, Pope Francis inspires our efforts: “Dear brothers and sisters who are sick, you are precious members of the Church; you are the flesh of Christ Crucified, who we have the honor to touch and to serve with love.” (Vatican Radio, June 21, 2015). As we practice the corporal work of mercy involved in visiting persons who are ill and persons with disabilities, we should also remember caregivers who help the sick and disabled every day. Vacation Bible School will be held June 20-23 from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. each day. Our theme this year is Living in God's Kingdom. All children ages 4-12 are invited to attend. Registration forms are available at the parish office or in the back of church. Forms can also be downloaded from our church website (located under documents tab). Completed forms can be turned in to the parish office or dropped in the collection basket at weekend masses. Crusade for Children: Since 1955, the Archdiocese of Louisville has contributed more than $7 million dollars to the Crusade for Children. This community-wide effort exists to change the lives of children with special needs, and many families in the Archdiocese have benefited directly from the Crusade, as have our schools, which have received grants to assist students with diverse learning disabilities. A door collection will be taken this weekend for those who haven’t had a chance to give. It would be greatly appreciated if ushers would stand at the doors at the end of Mass. If giving by check, please make your check payable to the parish and put the word “Crusade” in the memo line. Thank you for your generosity. Annual Fund Appeal: The St. Dominic School AFA campaign total is currently at $23,070. Thank you to all those who have supported our campaign this year, which will wrap up on June 30th. Your continued support makes so many things possible for St. Dominic School! The Heart of KY Red Cross Chapter is hosting a Welcome Orientation for adults interested in volunteering for the Red Cross. The orientation will provide information on what the Red Cross does, ways to volunteer and how to become a volunteer. Washington County is in need of volunteers and there is opportunity for either a little or a lot of volunteer time. This orientation will be held at the Washington County High School library on Tue., June 14, from 6:00 –7:30 pm. For additional information, please contact Lisa Haydon at 859-285-0099. The Record will publish the second Bridal Issue of 2016 on July 28. Submit your FREE bridal announcement for weddings between July 28, 2016 - January 11, 2017. Missed your opportunity to submit within the past year? Call or email for more information on marriage announcements. To submit, please mail in the published weekly form or go online for the expanded option, theRecordNewspaper.org. Also, we are again offering our "Reflections" section which is open to all brides from past Bridal Issues. To submit, email Rachell Rauh at [email protected] or call 502-471-2125 with any questions. The deadline is Friday July 1, 2016 at 12 noon. St. Vincent de Paul Society will meet June 7 at 5:30 p.m. at St Rose. New members are always welcome. Call 859-481-1790 for more information. IGA Receipts, BOXTOPS for Educations & Campbell’s Labels are all fundraisers for our school. We ask that you continually save them and drop them in the wooden boxes in the back of church.

GOD’S PRESENCE

Realize above all that you are in God’s presence . . . empty yourself completely and sit waiting, content

with the grace of God, like a chick who tastes nothing and eats nothing but what its mother gives it. —St. Romuald
