Stewardship by the Book

September 8, 2019 Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jesus tells the crowd that only those who renounce all of their possessions can be His disciples. Is He truly asking us to five up everything? Perhaps in-

stead He is trying to help us see that everything we think we own is really a gift from God. Good stew-

ards know that and strive to use those gifts accountably.

Making Good on an Offer Just a couple of weeks ago in this space I had mentioned my openness to suggestions for bulletin article topics.

A couple of people have already responded, so I felt the need to make good on the offer. A parishioner asked me to ex-plain the concept of love, as it is a word often used in a variety of ways (“I love pizza!” “I love Purdue!” “I love my mother!”) This a great question, because no subject is more important than love, nor is any subject more misunderstood! Luckily, I don’t have to rely on my own intellect to answer that question. Rather, I’ll rely on the writings of the great 20th Century author C.S. Lewis, who wrote a wonderful book called The Four Loves. (I highly recommend any of Lewis’s writings. His theological books are not too difficult to understand, and I consider his Narnia series to be required fiction reading for all teenagers!)

It helps to realize that our English language is impoverished in this area in comparison to other languages. The Greek language has four different words for love, and these four constitute Lewis’ descriptions of various experiences of human love. Storge: simple affection, or a bond of empathy. This arises among acquaintances, family members, or others who are

familiar to us, such as a parent’s affection for their child. It is a natural affection and predominantly emotional. Philia: friendship love. It is a bond between who have a common worldview and desire each other ’s betterment. Friend-

ship love is not necessary for human existence, but essential for human flourishing. A true friendship is an art form which takes much work.

Eros: romantic, sexual love. This is a desire-based experience of which we typically refer to as “being in love.” It must be guided by reason and subordinated to #4.

Agape: unconditional charity toward another. It is selfless, absolute, and goes beyond personal desires and needs. This is the divine love that God has for us.

This last category is most important for our understanding of authentic love. A simple definition from St. Thomas Aqui-nas would be “to will the good of the other for their own sake.” This is developed in the Cathechism of the Catholic Church (every home should have one!) which defines charity as “the theological virtue by which we love God above all things for his own sake, and our neighbor as ourselves for the love of God” (#1822). Pope St. John Paul II deepens our idea of love with his language of “self-gift” which is necessary in any authentic love. St. Paul writes that charity is superi-or to all other virtues: “So faith, hope, and charity abide, these three. But the greatest of these is charity” (1Cor 13:13), and he says that without charity we are nothing (1 Cor 13:1-4). Why is it helpful to reflect on the concept of love? I can think of three good reasons. God is love (1 Jn 4:8). If we do not understand the concept of love, how can we understand God? How can we know how

to live friendship with Him? Examine your love for God. Do I love God? Or is my relationship with him based primarily in selfish motives? How

could someone else see that I love God with agape love? Examine your relationships. Often teenagers can confuse infatuation with love, or base their friendships or dating rela-

tionships on how it makes them feel. We adults can do the same! Love is not a feeling or an emotion, nor is it merely kindness. As the author Peter Kreeft puts it, “Kindness is sympathy with and the desire to relieve another's suffering. But love (agape) is the willing of another's good. A father can spank his child out of love. And God is a father.”

Let’s learn to live love more authentically! And keep your suggestions coming! E-mail me at [email protected]. Under the Mercy, Father Haan Pray for the Sick Let us pray for these sick: Virgil Schutter, Jack Allison, Kim Dahnke, Collette Lavelle, Ron Sondgerath, Amber Brost, Janet Schutter, Dick Bowman, Mark Cochran, Jason Cole, Brian Lemenager, Staci Wittenauer, Mary Reed, Sharon Eberle, Glenn Barnard, Cooper Gretencord, Mark McMaster, Donna Cooley, Charlie Senesac, Ray Muller, Nancy Barrett and Gail Muller.
