Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Today’s Readings First Reading: I shall gather the remnant of my flock and bring them back to their meadow (Jeremiah 23). Psalm: The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want (Psalm 23). Second Reading: In Christ Jesus you who were once far off have become near by the blood of Christ (Ephesians 2). Gospel: When Jesus saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, and he began to teach them many things (Mark 6). Readings for the Week Monday: Mi 6:1-4, 6-8; Ps 50:5-6, 8-9, 16bc-17, 21, 23; Mt 12:38-42 Tuesday: Mi 7:14-15, 18-20; Ps 85:2-8; Mt 12:46-50 Wednesday: 2 Cor 4:7-15; Ps 126:1bc-6; Mt 20:20-28 Thursday: Jer 2:1-3, 7-8, 12-13; Ps 26:6-7ab, 8-11; Mt 13:10-17 Friday: Jer 3:14-17; Jer 31:10-13; Mt 13:18-23 Saturday: Jer 7:1-11; Ps 84:3-6a, 8a, 11; Mt 13:24-30 Sunday: 2 Kgs 4:42-44; Ps 145:10-11, 15-18; Eph 4:1-6; Jn 6:1-15 Saints and Special Observances Sunday: Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Monday: St. Bridget Tuesday: St. Sharbel Makhlūf Wednesday: St. James Thursday: Ss. Joachim and Anne Saturday: Blessed Virgin Mary Scripture Reflection For several weeks we have listened to readings that have recounted just how arduous the work of prophets and disciples can be. In today’s Gospel, the Lord Jesus listens to the re-ports of those he had sent out “two by two” to minister to the people. After the apostles reported what they had done, Jesus, recognizing their fatigue, says, “Come away by your-selves to a deserted place and rest awhile” (Mark 6:31). Perhaps this is what the Lord is telling his disciples in the year 2018 as well. We need to pause on our journey of disciple-ship and simply rest in the Lord. Sunday Mass provides many opportunities for quiet times, particularly during the periods of silence following the readings. Why not take the time today to allow the saving word of the Lord to penetrate your heart during those silent times? Ask the Lord to renew you in body, mind, and spirit for the arduous work of discipleship. Archdiocesan Family Prayer Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us that we may be a holy family. Amen. St. Catherine of Siena Parish Prayer God, Our Father, we thank you for our parish community of St. Catherine of Siena. Thank you for the many blessings that you have given us, but especially for calling us to serve as disciples of your son, Jesus Christ. As we gather today, we ask that you send your Holy Spirit to guide us in everything that we do. Transform our hearts and lead us closer to you. Help us always to seek to be a parish that is Centered on Christ and Ablaze with Love. We ask all of these things in the name of Jesus, and through the intercession of our Blessed Mother. St. Catherine of Siena, pray for us!

A Word of Caution to the SCS Community Please be advised that people pretending to be Fr. Tim, Fr. Ronnie, and other staff members are emailing parishioners and asking for help buying gift cards. The impersonator(s) have created emails that look similar to the real email addresses. If you receive a scam email or a suspicious email, please do not even respond to it. No one on the staff will ever email asking for a favor like that. If you have any questions about the authenticity of an email you receive, please call the par-ish office at 835-9343 and ask to speak to the person instead of responding to the email. Unfortunately, someone is trying to take ad-vantage our Christian charity. Please be vigilant. Bonnabel War Monument Being Relocated Jefferson Parish recently notified the parish office that the war monu-ment on the corner of Bonnabel Boulevard and Metairie Road is in the process of being relocated to Veterans Memorial Boulevard, where all other Parish war monuments are located. The monument area on Vet-erans has parking, which will allow visitors easier access to the monu-ment. The monument also is being relocated in order to protect it from being damaged. In the last several years, it has been hit by several cars in its current location. Relocating the monument also will allow for the monument to be properly maintained by Jefferson Parish. After the monument has been moved, grass will be installed. The project is expected to take 60 days to complete. My Alpha Experience: Mary Sue Battle When I received my Alpha invitation, my first reac-tion was, “Oh, no, that’s too long of a commitment and this is totally out of my comfort zone!” After some persuasion from my

husband, I decided to go. I was a little on the defensive side at the first meeting. “I don’t need this. I already believe in God. This is for people who don’t believe.” But after the first two sessions I started to feel a little more open and receptive to the videos. Meeting every week with the same group, talking about our faith and becoming so aware of the Holy Spirit’s presence, really opened my heart to a deeper love of God. Not only did I make new friends but spending the extra night each week at Alpha class allowed me to focus on what is really important in life…Love and Faith in The Lord.

CYO Ablaze Service Retreat

The CYO Ablaze Service Retreat included (facing page, top row) visiting with students at St. Michael Special School; (row two) helping with bingo and visiting residents of St. Margaret’s at Mercy; (row three) working with Trinity Community Center to paint the home of an individual in need; (bottom row) holding a car wash; and (this page, top row) talks, prayer, and adoration. The youth finished the week with a “fun day” in New Orleans (second row).

Letter from Fr. Tim One of the goals of the Ninth General Synod for the Archdiocese of New Orleans is to make the Sacrament of Reconciliation more available in all parishes. Over the last few months, the liturgy committee, the pastoral council, and the parish staff have been discussing the possibility of adding evening confession times, slightly altering the current confession schedule to make it more convenient, and adding an evening Mass. Before imple-menting any changes, however, we wanted to present these changes to the parish community and seek feedback from you. The following pro-posals are being considered: 1. Adding Wednesday evening confessions at 5:30 pm Currently, there are no regular opportunities for evening confessions at SCS. This significantly limits the availability of confession for people who work. Having evening confessions at 5:30 pm will allow people to stop by on the way home from work. 2. Moving morning confessions on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday to BEFORE Mass at 8:30 am Currently, confessions are being offered Monday, Wednesday, and Friday AFTER 9 am daily Mass. The proposed change is to offer confessions BE-FORE 9 am Mass, starting at 8:30 am. There are several reasons for this change. First, if someone is in need of confession before going to Com-munion at daily Mass, it affords the individual the opportunity to receive sacramental absolution before receiving Communion. Second, offering confession before Mass would allow more working people to participate in the sacrament if needed. The current 9:30-10 am confession time is not the most convenient for people who work. With the new schedule, someone could stop by confession before work. Third, when confession is of-fered after Mass, everyone shows up at the same time after Mass and has to wait. By offering confession before Mass, people could show up at different times and not wait as long. 3. Adding a Wednesday evening Mass at 6 pm There are many opportunities for morning Mass at SCS and at neighboring parishes, but very limited opportunities for evening Mass. Offering a weekly evening Mass allows people who work the opportunity to go to daily Mass after work or before an evening meeting on campus. If these are helpful and acceptable, they would take effect on September 1, 2018. If you have any feedback or suggestions, please let me know before the end of July. You can email me at [email protected]. Fr. Tim
