Catholics set up altars in honor of guardian angels as early as the 4th Century, and local celebrations of a feast in honor of guardian
angels go back to the 11th Century. The feast was first kept by the Franciscan order in 1500. This feast, like many others, was local before it was placed in the General Roman Calendar in 1607 by Pope Paul V. “Angel of God, my Guardian dear, to whom His love commits me here, ever this day (or night) be at my side, to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.”
Saint Francis of Assisi, born Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone, (1181/1182-3 October 1226), was an Italian Roman Catholic friar, deacon and
preacher. He founded the men's Order of Friars Minor, the women’s Order of Saint Clare, the Third Order of Saint Francis and the Custody of the Holy Land. Francis is one of the most venerated religious figures in history. Pope Gregory IX canonized Francis on 16 July 1228.In 1219, he went to Egypt in an attempt to convert the Sultan to put an end to the conflict of the Crusades. In 1223, Francis arranged for the first Christmas live nativity scene. According to Christian tradition, in 1224 he received the stigmata during the apparition of Seraphic angels in a religious ecstasy making him the first recorded person in Christian history to bear the wounds of Christ's Passion.
On October 7, the Roman Catholic Church celebrates the yearly feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. Known for several centuries by the
alternate title of “Our Lady of Victory,” the feast day takes place in honor of a 16th century naval victory which secured Europe against Turkish invasion. Pope St. Pius V attributed the victory to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who was invoked on the day of the battle through a campaign to pray the Rosary throughout Europe.

THE PRAYER OF ST. FRANCIS
Lord, make me an instrument of
your peace,
Where there is hatred, let me sow
love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy;
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be
consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

The First Friday Devotions are a set of devotions to especially recognize the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and through it offer reparations for sins. In the visions of Christ reported by Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque in the 17th century, several promises were made to those people who practiced the First Fridays Devotions, one of which included final
perseverance. The devotion consists of several practices that are performed on the first Fridays of nine consecutive months. Promises
1. I will give them all the graces necessary for their
state of life.
2. I will give peace in their families.
3. I will console them in all their troubles.
4. I will be their refuge in life and especially in death.
5. I will abundantly bless all their undertakings.
6. Sinners shall find in my Heart the source and infinite
ocean of mercy.
7. Tepid souls shall become fervent.
8. Fervent souls shall rise speedily to great perfection.
9. I will bless those places wherein the image of
my Sacred Heart shall be exposed and venerated.
10. I will give to priests the power to touch the most
hardened hearts.
11. Persons who propagate this devotion shall have
their names eternally written in my Heart.
12. In the excess of the mercy of my heart, I promise
you that my all powerful love will grant to all those who
will receive Communion on the First Fridays, for nine
consecutive months, the grace of final repentance: they
will not die in my displeasure, nor without receiving the
sacraments; and my Heart will be their secure refuge in
that last hour. How to complete the Nine First Fridays Devotion:
On the first Friday of nine consecutive months:
1. Receive Holy Communion on each of the First
Fridays
2. The nine first Fridays must be consecutive;
3. They must be made in honor of and in reparation to
His Sacred Heart.

MONTH OF THE HOLY ROSARY
The month of October is dedicated to the Holy
Rosary. According to an account by fifteenth-century
Dominican, Alan de la Roch, Mary appeared to St.
Dominic in 1206 after he had been praying and
doing severe penances because of his lack of success
in combating the Albigensian heresy. Mary praised
him for his valiant fight against the heretics and then
gave him the Rosary as a mighty weapon, explained
its uses and efficacy, and told him to preach it to
others.
"Since the prayers of the Rosary come from such
excellent sources — from Our Lord Himself, from
inspired Scripture, and from the Church — it is not
surprising that the Rosary is so dear to our Blessed

FOOD INSECURITY
How would you feel if you didn’t know where your next meal was coming from… Or even when? Probably
not so good, right?
There are many individuals and families in Ringwood and surrounding towns that are experiencing food
insecurity right now! Or perhaps utility insecurity - medical insecurity - transportation insecurity - housing
insecurity - and the list goes on. How will the bills be paid? Can I stay in my house?
You can help. Support the Ringwood Hunger Walk on November 5th at Shepherd. All proceeds from the
money you collected in pledges go to the Center For Food Action in Ringwood which provides direct food
relief, homelessness prevention, utility and medical assistance, and advocacy and referral services to
thoroughly vetted clients in local towns.
There are pledge envelopes and information flyers at the doors of the church. Please take one and ask family
and friends to sponsor you on the Walk. Even better ask them to walk too.
Bring the envelope with you on Nov. 5 to Shepherd Lake and join other like-minded individuals walking to
stop hunger and homelessness. All proceeds are distributed to vetted clients in the Ringwood Area.
