In the work of expanding Highway 101 into a free way from Los Angeles through Ventura County, the planners faced a mountain directly in their path. A decision had to be made. It was possible to continue the freeway by directing the roadway to the north in what was in effect a detour around the mountain’s summit. The alternative was to go straight ahead, dynamite a path over the Conejo grade and so continue the freeway on a direct path. The alterna- tive was chosen. It was the right choice. Jesus invited the rich man in the Gospel to make a choice. He urged him to sell what he had and give the proceeds to the poor so that he could follow him. The rich man made the wrong decision. He was too attached to his wealth to give it up. His possessions were like a mountain, separating him from Jesus. He saw that obstacle as too great to over- come. We do not know what happened to him. Maybe eventually he found a round-about way of following Jesus and did become a disciple, but he missed his first opportu- nity. Some men and women throughout the history of the Church have responded to the invitation of Jesus in a literal way. They have actually given up all their material posses- sions in order to lead the life of hermits or monks or nuns. Most of us are not very eager to follow their example, and the truth is that the Church and society could not exist if we all did. Not everyone in the Church has the same vocation or calling, and yet we cannot simply dismiss the invitation of Jesus as irrelevant or impossible. Fr. Paul Materu Fr. Paul Materu Fr. Paul Materu Fr. This is a great series and any individual session can make a difference in our relationship with God. Last week Bishop Barron talked about the story of the

anything and everything that keeps us away from God. We must surrender

all that we have to Christ and conform our lives to His ways. It might seem

impossible, as it did to the disciples when they asked, "Then who can be

saved?". Then Jesus responded, "For mortals it is impossible, but for God all

things are possible." Bishop Barron explained how there is only hope if we

“Conversion Series” The Bishop Barron Conversion series

continues this Thursday at 5:30 at the Immaculate Concep-

tion Parish Center. For those that haven't made it yet

please feel free to attend any of the sessions. This is a

great series and any individual session can make a differ-

ence in our relationship with God. The Bishop Barron Con-

version series continues tonight with the conversion story

of Jonah. Please join us and bring someone along with you.

As always, dinner and childcare are provided!

Last week Bishop Barron walked through the story of Mat-

thew in the context of the famous painting of Matthew's

conversion story. Matthew seems to be surprised that Je-

sus is calling him. Bishop Barron related that to us all. We

all have moments where we doubt that Jesus is calling us

and/or fail to recognize His call. But just like Matthew, we

are called to be saved and every little opportunity in our

life to recognize God and follow His ways in our lives is Him calling us. To find out more or to rsvp by email [email protected]. You can also follow the group on Facebook at
