We experience so many things throughout our lifetime. Many of these experiences we welcome, but some experiences we would rather do without. Very often, we don’t know when these negative experiences will happen. In today’s Gospel, Jesus warns the disciples that there will be very challenging times ahead, as he tells them about the suffering he will endure. Peter is in denial; he does not want anything bad to happen to Jesus, and so he cannot accept that Jesus will suffer and die. Jesus calls Peter “Satan,” which seems like a harsh comment, especially for Jesus. But Jesus uses this to underline the importance of his obedience to God’s will. He wants the disciples to understand that fighting against God’s will and God’s plan for one’s life can lead one into a life of sin and inauthenticity. God has laid out the path before Jesus. Yes, it is a difficult, painful, dark path, but the path also leads to the resurrection—for Jesus and for all of us. Jesus knows that God’s plan of salvation is for the good of humanity. Even in the face of suffering, Jesus can praise God and follow his will. Jesus wants his disciples, and especially Peter, to recognize that we must often accept the path that God has set before us. We have unique gifts and talents to do so much good in the world, and God creates a path for us to utilize these gifts and talents in our home, school, church and wider community. Jesus shows the disciples that to fight God’s will is to put the human will and desires above God’s. The First Commandment states that we must love God above all other things, including our own desires and our own wills. Though this is extremely difficult, we are challenged to integrate this way of thinking into our own lives and experiences. We can ask God to transform our desires so that they match his for our lives and for the salvation of the world. This is part of taking up our crosses, as Jesus exhorts us to do in the Gospel. When we carry our crosses, we recognize the reality of suffering in our world and acknowledge that Jesus is the one who heals it. Jesus endured pain and suffering in his life, yet he triumphed over all of this through his Resurrection. We can share the burdens of our suffering with Jesus and know that we will also share in his triumph and eternal life.

♦ Please maintain social distancing. (6 feet)
♦ Purell is available in the vestibule of Church.
♦ Mass is limited to 25% capacity (about 120-140 people).
♦ Families from the same household may sit next to each other.
♦ Offertory baskets will be placed in the sanctuary on either side of the altar and in the back of church by the double doors. You may put all your first and second collection envelopes and offerings in any of the baskets.
♦ There is not to be any gathering in the vestibule before or after Mass.
♦ Please feel free to ask if you have any questions or concerns.

Receiving Communion
♦ The communicant should come before the minister of Communion with their mask on for the dialogue (“The Body of Christ, Amen”) and then, moving to the side, lower the mask and consume the Eucharist and replace their mask.
♦ The Precious Blood WILL NOT be distributed.
♦ Parishioners will come for Communion observing at least 6 feet of distance between them as they ap-proach. The floor has markings on it.
♦ IT IS VERY STRONGLY RECOMMENDED THAT PARISHIONERS RECEIVE HOLY COMMUNION IN THE HAND. This is for the safety of the parishioner receiving Holy Communion and the minister of Holy Communion. If a parishioner wishes to receive on the tongue they should come forward at the end of the Communion line so they are the last ones receiving so that the Communion ministers can disinfect their hands if need be after each person receives.
