Be Kind Needham is a 100% volunteer based organiza on dedicated to distribu ng masks to Needham’s most vulnerable popula on. If you are a senior or know of a senior ci zen in need of a mask please contact us at [email protected]. Quan es are limited. Please note that these are not medical grade masks but they can provide a level of protec on if you need to leave your home. All we ask in return is that you smile under your mask!
CONFESSION - For the me being, while we are s ll adjus ng to the new norms for going to Mass, the Sacrament of Confession will be offered in the crying room on Saturdays from 2:30 to 3:15. As always, you can also set up an appointment with Fr. Derek for the sacrament.
ELDERS & THOSE MOST AT RISK - Once again, please remember to check in on the elders of our community and those who might have underlying condi ons that make them most at risk for this corona-virus. A NOTE FROM FR. DEREK
I pray that this note finds you well and ge ng some rest in these summer months. While the summer is a me for vaca ons and relaxing, it is important that we not relax our efforts at trying to remain safe as we con nue to live through this pandemic. News reports from other parts of the country remind us that it certainly is not over.
This past week The Boston Globe printed an ar cle from the Associated Press regarding the federal governments payroll protec on program during the height of the pandemic and the Catholic Church’s access to that program (“A er Lobbying, Catholic Church won $1.4 billion in coronavirus aid,” The Boston Globe, July 10, 2020), claiming that this made, “the global religious ins tu on with more than a billion followers among the biggest winners in the U.S. Government’s pandemic relief efforts….” I just wanted to touch base with you on this for a moment.
The Archdiocese of Boston, in response to this ar cle noted, “At the start of the COVID crisis, all parishes (280) and ministries of the Archdiocese were shu ered as were many organiza ons and small businesses….Our employees live and work in the communi es our parishes serve. The Archdiocese ac vely par cipated in the Payroll Protec on Program (PPP) loans provided by the government to ensure that we con nued to keep employees paid while parishioner contribu ons made during Mass, the mains source off revenue for the parishes and ministries, was disrupted by the crisis.” The statement went on to men on that there are 3,300 parish and school employees in the Archdiocese and that parishes and schools received a total of $31.7M in loans.
As you can see, the PPP was useful in maintaining many of the jobs of Church personnel in the Archdiocese (both at parishes and schools). I wanted to let you know that St. Bartholomew Parish did not request any loans from the Payroll Protec on Program. Given our reserves and the fact that so many of you rallied to the parish’s support either through online giving or by dropping off or mailing your dona ons during the me when public Masses were not being celebrated, the parish was able to remain solvent and we were able to retain all of our staff as they worked from home and did not meet the criteria for a loan. For your great a en veness to this and your generosity, I am very grateful. Please pray that our community, our na on and the world may con nue to make progress in keeping this novel coronavirus in check so that we may not have to go through another shutdown again. I pray you are all staying safe.

LECTIO DIVINA - Lec o Divina, meaning "Divine Reading", is a special form of prayer that involves praying with scripture. Using a combina on of scripture, medita on and prayer, the Lec o Divina is a powerful
way to increase the frui ulness of one's prayer, get more out of scripture and grow closer to God. Origina ng in early monas c communi es, the monks came to understand the spiritual benefits of spending me in quiet reflec on with scripture and we can experience the same blessings. Join us on Tuesday mornings at 10:30am via Zoom to learn more about the Lec o Divina and reflect on the upcoming Sunday Gospel. Please email Mike Dickson at [email protected] to reserve your spot.

ANNUAL ARCHDIOCESAN CATHOLIC APPEAL
While many aspects of our life have come to a stands ll, the work of our diocesan and parish ministries con nues as we strive to meet the needs of those who are relying on our guidance and assistance. The sick and homebound con nue to receive spiritual support and informa on over the phone from the Archdiocese’s Faith Community Nurses and Chaplains program. Our Pregnan-cy Help Centers con nue to provide resources for women facing crisis pregnancies. Those suffering from addic on s ll need support and guidance and many have greater need for counseling and spiritual support during this me of heightened anxiety.
Many thanks to those of you who have already supported it. As of July 13th , St. Bartholomew has pledged $77,490 towards our assessment of $32,320 and our goal of $103,526. The success of the Appeal is vital in funding the 51 central ministries that provide assistance to our parishes,
schools, and communi es in a variety of ways. Every gi , regardless of the size, is meaningful and can make an impact. Although the structure of the Religious Ed. program may be different due to the pandemic, we are planning on providing religious educa on for all grades star ng in the fall and are developing flexible op ons that can be adjusted according to guidelines from the state and archdiocese. In March, we were planning to implement a new online registra on program (the one we used last year has some signifi-cant issues). Due to the office closures, that project has been delayed. We have both a printed and an online registra on form available, however all payments will need to be either mailed to or dropped off at the parish office. We appreciate your understanding with this inconvenience. We under-stand that at this me many are in financially uncertain circumstances.
