LLIVE-STREAMED MASS - With the resumption of public Masses, we will plan to continue to live-stream Mass each Sunday on our Facebook page here, as well as on our website. We will plan on streaming the 9:45 AM Mass on Sundays. The Mass will also be available after-wards for replay on both sites.

A NOTE FROM MICHAEL DICKSON

To the parishioners of St Bartholomew parish,

I wanted to take a moment to thank you for your kindness and hospitality and inviting me into your community this

summer. I can’t believe it is already the end of July and unfortunately time to say goodbye. My last day will be

Friday July 31st. From the very first day, you have welcomed me with open arms. Your warm smiles and friendly

demeanors have made me feel as though I’ve been a member of the St Bart’s community for years, and for that I

am forever grateful. This truly is a very special place.

Interacting with everyone before and after Mass as well as and participating with the various groups and

discussions have given me the opportunity to grow closer to God and mature as a Catholic and as a person. I tried

very hard to memorize all your names. Although it took some time, I think I finally got them all. Please accept my

apologies if I did not.

I’ve been telling my family and friends how wonderful it has been spending the past 8 weeks at St Bartholomew

parish. Not only is everyone so nice but your love for the Mass and the Eucharist is inspiring. It has been incredible

seeing so many people attending daily Mass and praying with such devotion. Our world is currently going through

unprecedented times, but I am confident that through prayer, the most holy Rosary and recognition of the true

presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, we will get through this. Let us take to heart the words of Padre Pio, “Pray, Hope,

and don’t worry”.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you again for a wonderful summer. Please know that you will all be in my

thoughts and prayers. I refuse to say goodbye because goodbye seems so definite, however let me sign off by

saying “until we see each other again.”

God Bless,

Mike

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS (RCIA)

Are you someone, or do you know someone, who:

Is not Catholic, but has expressed interest in becoming Catholic?

Has not been baptized, but would like to be?

Has been baptized, but has not received the sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation?

Saint Bartholomew’s Parish is offering an opportunity to such persons to learn more about the Catholic faith and to prepare to receive these Sacraments of Initiation if they wish. The program begins with a period of inquiry and discovery and then becomes a time of preparation to receive these sacraments at the Easter Vigil.

CHANGE OF TIME FOR MASS ON THURSDAY, JULY 30TH

On account of St. Sebastian’s hosting their long-overdue Commencement celebration on their field on the morning of Thursday, July 30th, our morning Mass that day will be held at 8:00 instead of the usual 9:00. This is to try to avoid conflicts in parking as well as competing with any noise from the Commencement while

2020-2021 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION REGISTRATION

Although the structure of the Religious Ed. program may be different due to the pandemic, we are planning on providing religious education for all grades starting in the fall and are developing flexible options that can be adjusted according to guidelines from the state and archdiocese. In March, we were planning to implement a new online registration program (the one we used last year has some significant issues). Due to the office closures, that project has been delayed. We have both a printed and an online registration form available, however all payments will need to be either mailed to or dropped off at the parish office. We appreciate your understanding with this inconvenience. We understand that at this time many are in financially uncertain circumstances. Please feel free to register now, and pay later (or contact us in the fall if financial assistance is needed).

WORLDWIDE MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER

Great News - Worldwide Marriage Encounter has gone "Virtual"!

To support married couples during this time of social distancing, Worldwide Marriage Encounter is sponsoring a virtual marriage experience called Restore – Rekindle – Renew. This Enrichment Experience will meet via Zoom for seven sessions on Monday evenings September 14 to October 26 from 7-9:30 PM.

Couples will explore their individual personality styles, improve listening and communication skills, understand God’s plan for their marriage, and learn how to keep their relationship a priority. Registration is limited and a $50 application fee is required. For more information or to apply, call Stephen & Michelle O'Leary at 800-710-9963 or visit them at https://wwmema.org/.

OFFERTORY

Thank you so much to those of you who have been

dropping off or mailing in your donations, and to those

of you who have continued, or are new to, donating

online. Your support of the parish community is greatly

appreciated. If you wish to donate online, you can do

that by going to the parish website and clicking the

“Donate!” icon or simply clicking here. I know with the

way the stock market is going, and with the pandemic,

that these are uncertain times, but every

little bit will help. Thank you.

LECTIO DIVINA

Lectio Divina, meaning "Divine Reading", is a special form of prayer that involves praying with scripture. Using a combination of of scripture, meditation and prayer, the Lectio Divina is a powerful way to increase the fruitfulness of one's prayer, get more out of scripture and grow closer to God. Originating in early monastic communities, the monks came to understand the spiritual benefits of spending time in quiet reflection with scripture and we can experience the same bless-ings. Join us on Tuesday morning at 10:30am via Zoom to learn more about the Lectio Divina and reflect on the upcoming Sunday Gospel. Please email Mike Dickson at [email protected] to reserve your spot.

MONTROSE SCHOOL: ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR FALL 2020

At Montrose, we believe that girls are called to greatness. Our agile faculty pivoted to synchronous remote learning when schools had to close, and our community stayed connected as we reinvented traditions while protecting the health and safety of every member. One benefit of our size? We are well equipped to welcome the whole commu-nity back to school, in person, in September. Check out the Montrose difference at montroseschool.org.

CURSILLO – AN OPPORTUNITY FOR SPIRITUAL RENEWAL

What is spiritual renewal? It is a reawakening of an individual’s living the Christian faith, particularly growing in knowledge and love of Jesus. In his book, Letter to a Suffering Church, Bishop Robert Barron wrote, “I believe that our time calls for renewal movements that will involve both priests and laity. Perhaps Communion and Liberation, the Alliance for Catholic Education movement, Opus Dei, L’Arche, Cursillo, and the Fellowship of Catholic University Students give some indication of what these could take.” Cursillo is a short course in Christian living. It lasts 3 ½ days and is given by teams of priests and laity. Currently it is offered through the Archdiocese of Boston at the Campion Center in Weston. The cost is $250 for the weekend though scholarships are usually available if the cost presents a problem. Cursillo is also offered by the Holy Cross Fathers in Easton. The cost there is $140 for the weekend. Cursillo weekends are generally offered in the Fall and in the Spring with men and women attending on separate weekends. Anyone wishing more information is invited to contact Bob VanSickle at (781) 244-3301.

ANNUAL ARCHDIOCESAN CATHOLIC APPEAL - While many aspects of our life have come to a standstill, the work of our diocesan and parish ministries continues as we strive to meet the needs of those who are relying on our guidance and assistance. The sick and homebound continue to receive spiritual support and information over the phone from the Archdiocese’s Faith Community Nurses and Chaplains program. Our Pregnancy Help Centers continue to provide resources for women facing crisis pregnancies. Those suffering from addiction still need support and guidance and many have greater need for counseling and spiritual support during this time of heightened anxiety.

Many thanks to those of you who have already supported it. As of July 20th, St. Bartholomew has pledged $79,915 towards our assessment of $32,320 and our goal of $103,526. The success

of the Appeal is vital in funding the 51 central ministries that provide assistance to our parishes, schools, and communities in a variety of ways. Every gift, regardless of the size, is meaningful and can make an impact. To learn more about the Catholic Appeal, or to make your gift online, please visit the new Appeal website at boston-catholicappeal.org, where you can also view the 2020 Catholic Appeal video.

STAFFING AT THE RECTORY

Starting last week members of the staff began to come to

the office for about two days each, so that there are not

too many people in the building, yet there is someone

there each day. During this time, however, I would ask

you to conduct any business that you need by way of the

phone or mail when possible in order to limit the number

of people in the building. As you know, many business are

doing “curbside pickup” right now. This seems the best

way to function at this time, for everyone’s well being. If

you want to schedule a Mass intention or need a Mass

card, please call the rectory instead of stopping by. Mass

cards can be mailed to you or can be brought out to your

car at a convenient time. Stipend payments can be

mailed in or dropped through the mail slot in the front

door. Thank you for your cooperation with this.

CONFESSION - For the time being, while we are still adjusting to the new norms for going to Mass, the Sacrament of Confession will be offered in the crying room on Saturdays from 2:30 to 3:15. As always, you can also set up an appointment with Fr. Derek for the sacrament.

ELDERS & THOSE MOST AT RISK - Once again, please remember to check in on the elders of our community and those who might have underlying conditions that make them most at risk for this coronavirus. If you

know of someone who needs something, or you, your-self, are in need, please call the parish office.

FROM THE MUSIC MINISTRY - What music to choose during a pandemic? This is a question that I think about quite often, especially now that we are back in the church with no congregational singing. My first choice is to plan a lot of old favorites and songs that everyone loves, but since we can’t sing as one, too many of those songs in any given Sunday seems wrong. Then again, the tried and true favorites may be comforting to hear. So what we have tried to do is to have a balance in the music that we are presenting at Mass. Sometimes, we play a well-known hymn as an instrumental prelude before Mass, or during a Communion instrumental. Sometimes, when the readings and the season seem to be calling for nothing but that one piece of music that everyone loves to sing, like Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory for example, the cantor will sing it, and it is my hope that when you are hearing it that it lifts you up and you are singing it in your hearts. We are also using this time to sing some lesser known hymns that really connect to the message of the liturgy. Some of these newer hymns include Come Follow Me, The Wondrous News, Come to the River, and To Live With him Forever. We will continue to offer a balance of music that we love to hear in song or in instrumentation, new music that has a particular message, and music that allows our cantors to sing the word of God for everyone else, especially when we ourselves cannot sing it. Listen to our music, to the words of the hymns, and know that God is there, as always. And if you are watching from home, sing from your houses and reach us in the church with your song!
