A GOSPEL REFLECTION . . . . . . . . THINK OF WINNING THE LOTTO. It’s about the money, the new car, house,
vacations, bank accounts, and infinite pleasures. The possibility of acquiring these brings us back again and again
to the purchase of a ticket. Then, one day we win! Happiness is on the horizon. Then one
day, we wake up and realize that nothing has really changed, and I am not satisfied as I
thought I would be. I did not find joy.

Glimpses of joy are possible but not by material means. They do not last. The moment
we find ourselves looking back at them, they are gone. To carry joy within us is to realize
that it is not something I create or acquire. It is a gift. As C. S. Lewis discovered, joy is a
surprise that speaks to my soul and is given as gift by the God who loves me.

The beauty of Advent is found in discovering the gift of joy. God has visited his people for no other reason than
to show them where and how to find joy! our human and earthly joy experiences never satisfy us. It is only God
who is the joy of my soul. Real, Divine experiences of joy catch us off guard, and have an eternal Otherness about
them. Nothing created by humans can ever come close to this. We probably will not fully realize the truth of all of
this until we actually meet God face to face in heaven one day. Then, in that sacred moment when our hearts leap
for joy we will understand what we have been tirelessly searching for. ©LPi
BAMBINELLI BLESSING OF YOUR INFANT JESUS FIGURES
This custom is observed at the midday audience in St. Peter’s Square on this Third Sunday of Advent. The
Vatican audiences are temporarily abbreviated, and we are also adapting our Bambinelli ritual. We will use
the Pope’s blessing prayer, but Instead of inviting you to group at the altar, Father will bless your Infant fig-
ures as he walks in the aisles. For children who are present, he has a miniature Nativity to bring home. .

YEAR OF ST. JOSEPH
Dec. 8, Pope Francis marked the
150th anniversary of St. Joseph’s
title as patron of the universal
church by dedicating 2021 to the
saint. He wrote, “St. Joseph re-
minds us that those who appear
hidden...can play an incompara-
ble role in the history of salva-
tion. A word of recognition and
gratitude is due to them all.”

HOW THE YOUNGEST ONES ARE DOING CCD
Mrs. Celina Bozak meets with her first graders in
person almost every month. They are happy to see
one another, even though they are spaced a few
feet apart. In this recent session, Mrs. B. directs the
themes of giving thanks to God in prayer, ways we
can show thanks to one another, and how we can
take care of God’s gifts of the earth. Alessandro
Meccia, Anthony Lapomardo, Giulianna Lopes, and
Elianna Calabrese here are four of her five enrolled
in the pre-Communion class for 2022.
ADVENT WREATH DEDICATED TO FR. DEEKER
At the suggestion of the Tazzini Funeral Home
staff, and their memorial gift of the sanctuary Ad-
vent Wreath candles, we dedicate the wreath to
Rev. Geoffrey Deeker CSS
Memorial Gift of Christine Tazzini
Missioned here 1967-78, Fr. Deeker is fondly re-
membered for folk Masses celebrated in the lower
church. They were filled weekly with enthusiastic
young worshippers guided by his zeal for liturgical
development in participation and the vernacualar.
Fr. Deeker served on national and diocesan liturgi-
cal committees. After a second assignment, he was
missioned to OL Mt. Carmel, Pittsfield in 1999.
When that parish closed in 2008 we inherited this
wreath, chosen by him for its dramatic dimension
and congregation visibility. Fr. Deeker died Nov. 2.
The address of today’s GIFT SHOP SALE at the
Italian Cultural Center, 9 to 1pm, is 36 Marga-
ret Street. Masks and distancing required.
