Father Scott’S thoughtS:
Follow the Lead of the Hockey Players?
On December 11, 2019, Colin Bannen of the Patriot Leger posted an article about Cohasset and Hull teaming up
for high school boys hockey. 16 varsity-eligible players from Cohasset and 8 varsity-eligible players from Hull
have set aside past rivalries and formed the co-op Cohasset/Hull high school boys high school hockey team.
Though Hull was previously part of a similar co-op team with Middleborough, the geographic distance did not
make sense. Sacred Heart Parish in Middleborough is a wonderful parish, but can you imagine trying to be with
them in a church collaborative? These two groups of high school hockey players are stronger together than either
would be alone.
While there are some differences in the analogy I am making, chief among them being the fact that the goal of Disciples in Mission is not
to form one large parish for Cohasset and Hull, but rather to have two vibrant parishes working together in mutually beneficial ways to
bring people to a new or renewed relationship with Christ and His Church, I think we can learn something from these high school hockey
players. What is the potential for these two parishes to be stronger working together than either could ever be working alone? What could
these two parishes do together that neither parish could do by itself? If this can happen in high school hockey, what is the potential for
two neighboring parishes who are both part of the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church?
In the posting mentioned previously, the coaching staff points to the importance of the leadership of four senior captains, two from each
town, in the formation of this co-op team. While I promise you that I will lead as your pastor, the parishes and collaborative will need lay
leadership with whom I can work. Who will emerge as our “senior captains” as we move forward with strengthening these parishes
through the formation of the collaborative?
As we move forward, please join me in turning to Jesus Christ in prayer for all impacted by this upcoming transition – the parishioners
and staff members of the Catholic parishes in Amesbury and Salisbury and Cohasset and Hull, Father Michael, and me.
