against.
Christ does not condemn the
Pharisee for what he has done, but
for boasting about it. Neither does
Jesus say the Pharisee has done no
good at all. In the language Jesus
spoke He meant: “This man (the
tax collector) went back to his
house justified more than the other
(the Pharisee).”
We can learn from both the
Pharisee and from the tax collector.
The former did not cheat, deal
dishonestly, or commit adultery.
How did the Pharisee keep the
commandments? He said he fasted
twice a week. What kind of
penance was he doing? He gave one
tenth, not only of his earnings but
of all he possessed. How does your
giving to St. Anthony’s Church
compare with that? Follow the
Pharisee in the good he did. Some
Catholics follow him all the way.
They keep the laws and
regulations of the Church but they
look down on others who do not.
Don’t follow the Pharisee that far.
Most of us feel more comfortable
with the tax collector. He is a
sinner; so are we. He was sorry for
A priest had given a
moving homily on
the Gospel of today,
about the proud
Pharisee and the
humble tax collector.
Everybody was

Brown, who developed a decided
dislike for the Pharisee or anybody
who would brag: “I give you
thanks, O God, that I am not like
the rest of men … or even like this
tax collector.” Right after Mass Joe
shook hands with his pastor and
told him: “Good homily, Father.”
Then he added: “Thank God, I’m
not like that Pharisee.”
Joe did not realize it but he was
committing the same sin that the
Pharisee in Jesus’ parable had
committed: the sin of pride – the
sin of considering himself better
than someone else.
Isn’t that how many of us react to
this story? We congratulate
ourselves that we do not brag like
the Pharisee: we pat ourselves on
the back that we are the sinner
asking for mercy. That reaction is
the very fault Christ is warning
FOLLOW BOTH
his sins; so are we. He asked God
to have mercy on him; so do we.
We do this especially during the
Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. At the
beginning we prepare to celebrate
Mass by calling to mind our sins.
We confess our failings to God and
His Mother and the saints. We beg
for forgiveness. We cry out: “Lord
have mercy – Christ have mercy –
Lord have mercy.” In the Creed we
profess our faith in the forgiveness
of sins. With the priest we offer the
Precious Blood, shed “so that sins
may be forgiven.” “Have mercy on
us all,” we cry in the Eucharistic
Prayer. Just before we receive Holy
Communion, we tell Jesus: “Lord, I
am not worthy that you should
enter under my roof, but only say
the word and my soul shall be
healed.” May the prayer of the tax
collector be the prayer of us all:
“God, be merciful to me, a sinner!”
Imitate the Pharisee in his good
works but not in his boasting. Try
to please God but don’t brag about
it. Imitate the tax collector as you
assist at the Holy Sacrifice which
took away all sin.
God bless you.

Regarding Fraternite Notre Dame
Each of us in the Catholic faith community has a responsibility to reduce error, avoid schism, and promote
ecclesiastical communion. To that end, the Archdiocese of Detroit shares the following information about a group
operating in Detroit and elsewhere called “Fraternite Notre Dame,” which presents itself as a traditional Catholic
religious order of priests, friars, and religious sisters.
Fraternite Notre Dame entered the Archdiocese of Detroit in 2018 without the permission of Archbishop Vigneron.
As you may know, valid Catholic religious orders may not enter a diocese without the permission of the local
bishop.
The group bought the former Most Holy Name of Jesus church building on Van Dyke Avenue on the eastside of
Detroit. Most Holy Name of Jesus Church is no longer a church according to the Church’s law; it was closed in 1990
and deconsecrated, meaning it would no longer serve as a sacred space for Catholic worship. The building was sold
to another religious group, which later sold the property to Fraternite Notre Dame.
Fraternite Notre Dame represents itself as being in full communion with the Catholic Church and asserts that it
has a Cardinal-liaison assigned to the group by the Vatican. Despite the Archdiocese of Detroit’s multiple requests
for confirmation or clarification, the group has not presented anything to support these claims.
In the interest of truth and to avoid confusion among the faithful, we must clarify that, as best we are
able to tell, Fraternite Notre Dame is not an organization in ecclesiastical communion with the
Catholic Church. Catholics are advised to avoid association with this group.
Thank you for your attention to this important matter. Let us pray that God will bring all Christian communities
into full communion with the Roman Catholic Church, so that we may all be one. (cf. John 17:21)
This is a time of prayer and
sacrifice from Sept. 27 - Nov. 5 to
end abortions. There is a pack
and play at the back of the church
for donations to Family Life
Services Clinic and Pregnancy
Center. The Center needs gently
used high chairs, new car booster
seats, diapers size 5 & 6, cotton
swabs, infant nail clippers, baby
lotion, wash and shampoo and
preemie clothes.

Parents PLEASE do NOT forget to RSVP!
Please RSVP so I know how many snacks we need and how many
cars to hope for!
This year Trunk or Treat will be held on November 3rd at the 10:30 am
Mass. Fifth graders and under are invited to dress up as their favorite
saint and celebrate Mass! Following Mass there will be an activity in the
gym for half an hour while parents decorate their cars in the church
parking lot to get ready to pass out treats to our little heavenly heroes!
Sharing the Gospel
If you have ever thought that you
were better than somebody else,
you are not alone. Even grown-ups
think that way sometimes. The
truth is, you really are not better
than anyone else. You sin. You
make mistakes, just like other
people do. No matter how big or
how small you think your mistakes
are, they still make God angry.
Instead of looking down on other
people, remember your own
mistakes. Ask God to forgive you .
Prayer
Dear God, I am so sorry I ever
thought I was better than anybody
else. Please forgive me .

Parents—You Matter So Much to Us!
Parents have over 3,000 hours a year (represented by the big tower of
orange ping pong balls) to teach their children about Christ. Here at St.
Anthony we have, on average, 35 hours per year (see the small vase,
bottom left corner), in Faith Formation classes.
It’s critical that we work together to bring our children closer to Jesus.
Here are some suggestions to try. Attend Mass
regularly. Read and discuss the Sunday Gospel. Pray
together. Do a family rosary every night. Discuss
what your child is doing in Faith Formation.
Celebrate saints and feast days. Celebrate your
child’s baptism day. The list can go on.
Do you have to do everything listed above? No. But by
adding one suggestion at a time into your daily
routine, together with Faith Formation, we can bring
more children to Jesus.
As the saying goes, “A family that prays together,
stays together.”
