Dear fellow parishioners, For many people, a sort of National Enquirer spirituality is very attractive: big headlines. Huge events. Plenty of pizzazz. Lots of noise, hooting and hollering. Screaming at the world. Paying attention to anyone who claims to have had a spectacular vision, to have made a miracle happen, to have received a personal message from God (usually a grouchy message) for the world, or to have established a mega-church that draws in thousands of people each week. By contrast, today’s First Reading offers a more sober and subtle vision of God choosing to reach out to us, even as the Lord God reached out to Elijah the prophet:

At the mountain of God, Horeb, Elijah came to a cave where he took shelter.

Then the LORD said to him, “Go outside and stand on the mountain before the

LORD; the LORD will be passing by.”

A strong and heavy wind was rending the mountains and crushing rocks before the LORD—

but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake— but the LORD was not in the earthquake.

After the earthquake there was fire— but the LORD was not in the fire.

After the fire there was a tiny whispering sound. When he heard this,

Elijah hid his face in his cloak and went and stood at the entrance of the cave.

(1 Kings 19:9-13) This is why our Catholic tradition encourages us to take some quiet time each day to listen rather than talk. To meditate, to ponder, to squander time with Jesus rather than always running around like Chihuahuas on espresso. Action is good and necessary and holy: it shows that our faith is not dead (James 2:14-17), but rather an impetus for us to be the hands and voice of the Risen Lord in today’s world. This is why each parish has a Saint Vincent de Paul Society to help the poor, catechists and teachers to form children of the light, ministries to the homebound, the grieving, and those facing challenges such as unplanned pregnancy (e.g., The Gabriel Project). However, we also need to be still, to know that God is in charge, and to recharge our physical and spiritual batteries for what lies ahead. Even during this pandemic, people find retreats they can do online, and spiritual reading and faith sharing groups they can take part in through the magic of the internet and Zoom. Like Elijah, like Jesus, we need to come aside and rest a while (Mark 6:31) so that when God speaks to us softly, we will be able to hear. Father Brown

Around the World with Disney Summer Camp: Congratulations to our Youth Ministry for making this summer full of summer fun for our 12 campers. The first week they learned about France, Sweden, and New Orleans. The second week they learned about Egypt, Mexico, and Greece. During the final week, they “visited” China, Africa and areas in the USA. Learning about these amazing places and people around the world has been such a blessing of culture, tradition, and community.

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary- Since August 15th is a Saturday, the Assumption of Mary is not a Holy Day of Obligation. Fulfill your routine for your week-end Mass obligation.

1 Timothy 6:18 Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.
