Saint of the Day Sts. Joachim and Anne

July 26

In the Scriptures, Matthew and Luke furnish a legal family history of Jesus, tracing ancestry to show that Jesus is the culmination of great promises. Not only is his mother’s family neglected, we also know nothing factual about them except that they existed. Even the names Joachim and Anne come from a legendary source written more than a century after Jesus died. Joachim and Anne—whether these are their real names or not—represent that entire quiet series of generations who faithfully perform their duties, prac-tice their faith and establish an atmosphere for the coming of the Messiah, but remain obscure.

This is the “feast of grandparents.” It reminds grandparents of their responsi-bility to establish a tone for generations to come: They must make the tradi-tions live and offer them as a promise to little children. But the feast has a message for the younger generation as well. It reminds the young that older people’s greater perspective, depth of experience and appreciation of life’s profound rhythms are all part of a wisdom not to be taken lightly or ignored.

“...[T]he family is the foundation of society. In it the various generations come together and help one another to grow wise and to harmonize personal rights with the other requirements of social life” (Vatican II, Pastoral Consti-tution on the Church in the Modern World, 52).

Worship

Today’s readings explore the dynamics

of prayer. When the disciples ask Jesus

to teach them to pray as he prays, they

want to know what comes from his heart

when he goes off by himself to pray.

They know the traditional Jewish pray-

ers, like the psalms, but they want to

learn the prayer that comes from his

heart as he prays before the Father.

Learning the Son’s prayer will help them

learn and live into the disposition of his

heart.

First he tells them, turn to God in humil-

ity: “Father, hallowed be your name.”

Begin from the place that knows you are

not in control, that you are vulnerable

and need God. Then he teaches them the

prayer that we know as the Our Father.

It is often called the all-purpose Chris-

tian prayer that we know by heart from

our earliest years. In that prayer we dis-

cover a wonderful insight: it is not a

prayer asking God for something that

God may or may not be willing to give.

God gave us his Son Jesus; would God

withhold anything we seek?

Abraham asks God six times to spare the

people of the town; each time God re-

lents and agrees to be merciful. He

seems to welcome the requests because

he wants to be merciful. In the Gospel

the sleeping friend will eventually re-

spond to his friend’s request for bread,

not only because he is able to, but be-

cause of the friend’s persistent trust.

And the father will not give his son a

scorpion but an egg, not only because he

can, but because he desires to do so.

The point of Jesus’ stories is that the

Father is willing and waiting to give!

Learning to pray the prayer of Jesus is

learning the art of reception. We seem to

have mastered the prayers of supplica-

tion and intercession; we need also to

learn how to receive what God so deeply

and lovingly desires to bestow upon us.

“A WARM THANK YOU”

On July 11th, a wonderful group helped

with the preparation and serving of the

meal for the patrons of All Saints Soup

Kitchen in Detroit. I know the hour is

always very early to get underway to

make this event happen, but everyone

who attended had a bright smile on their

face, even at 6:45 a.m. A big thanks

goes to Sheryl Van Fleteren for purchas-

ing all the food and with the help of

Kim Zernec helped organized this event.

Christian Service

“What is in your heart?”

In this weekend readings we have Je-

sus teaching his disciples how to pray,

and the establishment of the Lord’s

Prayer; known and recognized by

many different faiths.

In the Catechism of the Catholic

Church they outline five different

forms of prayer; prayer of blessing

and adoration, prayer of petition,

prayer of thanksgiving, prayer of

praise and prayer of intercession.

(No. 2625-43.)

When the disciples asked Jesus to

teach them to pray, what they were

asking is what prayer was coming

from his heart, they truly wanted to

learn his ways. I was trying to re-

member when I first learned the

Lord’s Prayer, and this old brain just

would not recall it, what about you???

Last Friday the 22nd, we celebrated

the feast of Mary of Magdala, or Mary

Magdalene. I wonder, what did Mary

Magdalene pray as she witnessed Je-

sus’ crucifixion and at his resurrec-

tion? Although in the four Gospels

she is named at least 12 times, we

really associate her with the major

events in Christ’s life. It is also said

that Mary Magdalene was a member

of a group of women who were fol-

lowers of Jesus; I wonder, did they

learn the Lord’s Prayer from him, and

what else did they learn?

Pope Francis called Mary Magdalene

the “paradigm of the ministry of wom-

en in the church” and a very special

recognition also came from St. Thom-

as Aquinas saying Mary was the

“Apostle of the Apostles.”

As we pay homage to a very special

women of the Bible, let us honor both

her and Jesus by saying the Lord’s

Prayer daily, and when you are in

your private time in prayer, what kind

of prayer from the list above are you

praying today?

Peace and blessings,

Karyn

“All our words will be useless unless

they come from within. Prayer, to be fruitful, must come from the heart.”

CHILDREN’S VILLAGE PER-

FECT DAY! Thank you to Brooklyn,

Sam, Natalie, Jenna and my

wonderful husband, Dan.

We played softball, basket-

ball and volleyball with the

young ladies from two of

the buildings. Some of them had never swung

a bat or caught a ball and they had a riot! St.

Pat, Holy Spirit and St. Mary also had their

coaches and young people there to join in the

fun. We brought hamburgers, hotdogs, chips,

drinks, dessert and fruit for lunch and enjoyed

some fellowship while letting them know we

care. This is one of my favorite peer-to-peer

ministries, everyone enjoys the day.

MISSION TRIP 2017 ALERT!!

Yes, we have to plan next year’s trip right after

returning home from this year’s. We have de-

cided to go back to “Catholic Heart Work-

Camp” and the place available for the type of

camp we are looking for will be Cumberland, Maryland June 25-July 1, 2017. I have to pre-

book spots now as they fill up by the fall. We

require a non-refundable deposit of $50 to se-

cure your spot. I will place the order the first

part of August, so let me know a.s.a.p. I know

this is early, but this way you can plan around

it and if something unforeseen comes up, you

will have time to get a substitute.

This is for 8th grade through adults. I am able

to cover the cost for enough adult chaper-

ones to give us a 5-1 ratio, so first come, first

serve. It’s an experience of a lifetime and if

you’ve considered it in the past, JUST DO IT

THIS TIME, YOU WON’T REGRET IT!!

Some Common Questions Catholics have about

the Bible (Fr. Mark R. Pierce):

-Why are Catholic Bibles bigger than

Protestant? We all have the same 27 writings of Jesus (The

New Testament). Protestants have 39 books in

their Old Testament and Catholics have 46. This

happened when Martin Luther placed 7 of the

Jewish writings that the Church had been using

in a separate category, not on the same level as

the rest. This is when the Protestants took the 7

books out of their Bible. Catholics chose to con-

tinue using them-Judith, Tobit, 1 & 2 Maccabees,

Sirach, Wisdom and Baruch.

I personally recommend “The Catholic Youth

Bible” by Saint Mary’s Press. Others have recom-

mended New American Bible (NAB). The bottom

line is to find one you are comfortable using

and use it! Kim
