From Fr. Totton’s Desk On the Veiling of Crosses and Statues This week I would like to address the use of veils in Church. This column will appear in the bulletins of both St. Ann and St. Joseph Parishes. Last Sunday, if you attended Mass at St. Ann, you probably noticed that the crucifix and all the statues and images of Our Lord or saints were covered in violet colored veils. Though St. Joseph parishioners did not experience the same this year, my words are equally instructive there. Please consider the following instruction which appears in the Roman Missal (the altar edition) under the 5th Sunday of Lent: In the Dioceses of the United States, the practice of covering crosses and images throughout the church from this Sunday may be observed. Crosses remain covered until the end of the Celebration of the Lord's Passion on Good Friday, but images remain covered until the beginning of the Easter Vigil. While this instruction gives the "what" it leaves us to read between the lines if we are to understand the "why"! A reason that I had once heard given comes from the Gospel of John wherein, after his ill-received attempt to reveal his Divinity to the Jews, "Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple" (John 8:59). Prior to the reforms of the Second Vatican Council, this was the same Gospel read every year on the Fifth Sunday of Lent (then known as "Passion Sunday"). The argument goes that since Jesus had to go about "in secret" so also did his friends - the apostles, "so we might as well cover up the saints as well!" While I can see the merit in this argument, there is a deeper meaning to be found. The instruction mentions that images of the cross are to be uncovered - revealed - on Good Friday - this is done immediately prior to the veneration of the Cross, whereas the other images (of Our Lord, of saints, etc.) are to remain covered until the beginning of the Easter Vigil. On Holy Saturday, as the lights are brought up in Church and the choir begins to sing the Gloria - a hymn which had been silent for most of Lent - I have always felt the hairs on the back of my neck stand up to see the kind and gentle faces of Our Blessed Mother and the other saints suddenly re-appear as witnesses to the Lord's Resurrection! In this regard, the veiling is done precisely so that the unveiling will be a moment of more heightened awareness! Fr. On the Veiling of Crosses and Statues
This week I would like to address the use of veils in Church. This column will appear in the bulletins of both St. Ann and St.
Joseph Parishes. Last Sunday, if you attended Mass at St. Ann, you probably noticed that the crucifix and all the statues and
images of Our Lord or saints were covered in violet colored veils. Though St. Joseph parishioners did not experience the
same this year, my words are equally instructive there.
Please consider the following instruction which appears in the Roman Missal (the altar edition) under the 5th Sunday of
Lent: In the Dioceses of the United States, the practice of covering crosses and images throughout the church from this
Sunday may be observed. Crosses remain covered until the end of the Celebration of the Lord's Passion on Good Friday, but
images remain covered until the beginning of the Easter Vigil. While this instruction gives the "what" it leaves us to read
between the lines if we are to understand the "why"!
A reason that I had once heard given comes from the Gospel of John wherein, after his ill-received attempt to reveal his
Divinity to the Jews, "Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple" (John 8:59). Prior to the reforms of the Second Vatican
Council, this was the same Gospel read every year on the Fifth Sunday of Lent (then known as "Passion Sunday"). The
argument goes that since Jesus had to go about "in secret" so also did his friends - the apostles, "so we might as well cover up
the saints as well!" While I can see the merit in this argument, there is a deeper meaning to be found.
The instruction mentions that images of the cross are to be uncovered - revealed - on Good Friday - this is done
immediately prior to the veneration of the Cross, whereas the other images (of Our Lord, of saints, etc.) are to remain covered
until the beginning of the Easter Vigil. On Holy Saturday, as the lights are brought up in Church and the choir begins to
sing the Gloria - a hymn which had been silent for most of Lent - I have always felt the hairs on the back of my neck stand up
to see the kind and gentle faces of Our Blessed Mother and the other saints suddenly re-appear as witnesses to the Lord's
Resurrection! In this regard, the veiling is done precisely so that the unveiling will be a moment of more
heightened awareness!

Opportunities for Ministers
Ministry is the way in which the Church continues what Christ
began and still intends, namely, the salvation of humanity and
the transformation of the world. All baptized and confirmed
Christians receive a call and gifts enabling them to participate in
this mission. When lay people carry out Christ’s work as priest,
prophet, and king in their own proper way through public activ-
ity authorized by the Church, we call this lay ministry. Here are
some of the ways you might be able to answer that call:
Ushers - Lectors - Extraordinary Ministers of Holy
Communion
If you have a calling for any of the above ministries please see :
Fr. Joe Totton and he will arrange for training.
We need your help - thank you for your cooperation.
