Going Beyond the Mind You Have

Each Tuesday, beginning at 6:00 p.m., join

your friends and neighbors for a soup supper

and a movie ‘short’.

The theme of this year’s series, “Going Be-

yond the Mind You Have,” challenges partici-

pants to become more aware of the lenses

through which they view the world.

Each video lasts no more than 25 minutes

and presents some intriguing situation that

challenges viewers to “look again.” Discus-

sions after the movie will be led by a team of

experienced facilitators.

If you cannot attend the entire series, come

when you can. We will discuss a different

movie each week.

FROM THE VICAR... As we move through the Len-ten season, we move towards the week known as Holy Week—the week before Easter.

The week begins with Palm Sunday (April 1, this year)—the

day we commemorate Jesus’ entrance into Jeru-salem accompanied by the waving of palms and shouts of “Hosanna.” On Palm Sunday, we move from the glorious account of Jesus’ en-trance to the stark reality of what we call the Passion Narrative—the story of Jesus’ betrayal by Judas and denial by Peter; his arrest and trial; his death on the cross and burial in the tomb. Palm Sunday (also known as the Sunday of the Passion) sets the tone for the week to come.

On Maundy Thursday (April 5, this year), we focus on events surrounding Jesus’ Last Supper with his disciples. We begin with an Agape meal, reminiscent of the special meals that the first Christian communities celebrated and from which the sacrament of Holy Communion evolved. During worship, we remember that, on that night, Jesus gave a new commandment (in Latin mandatum, from which the word “Maundy” comes). This commandment is to love one an-other as Jesus has loved us. The service con-cludes with the dramatic stripping of the altar—a symbol both of the betrayal by Judas and the desertion of all the disciples as they fled in fear.

On Good Friday (April 6, this year), we pay our respects to Jesus, so to speak, as we acknowledge his death on the cross. A very large wooden cross (made by parishioner Glen Jacob-son) is placed in front of the altar. Parishioners keep a silent vigil before this cross throughout the day, beginning at 7:00 a.m .and ending at 7:00 p.m. with the Liturgy for Good Friday, a meditation on the stations of the cross, and communion from the reserved sacrament.

As we move through the 40 days of Lent, in-cluding this final week, we join generations of Christians who have walked this way of the cross with Jesus in preparation for the Feast of the Resurrection on Easter Day. May we join that throng this season for the keeping of a holy Lent.

Members at a Glance...

When Brig itte, Ben and Madi son Hisey first came to St. An drew’s,

they were ‘looking’ for a church. They felt very wel-comed, so they stayed. Shortly they were joined by husband and father, David. David admits that our service was at first somewhat confusing, but now they are all comfortable and glad to be worshipping here. Madison is a Junior at Miami Trace and Ben is a Freshman at The Ohio State University.

Brigitte is from Fayette County (her father is Mike Helfrich). She met David in Waynesville, where David is from. After living there about ten years, they moved to a farm close to Wash-ington C.H., where David farms and makes bells that are anywhere from two inches to twenty-four inches in size. Brigitte has a degree from OSU in Natural Resources. David has a musical back-ground and in the past has worked for Paramount studi-os and the Army Corps of Engineers in sound produc-tion. He has also been a choir director at several area churches. Sundays find the Hiseys busy at St. Andrew’s—teaching Sunday School, working in the Nursery and singing in the choir. They say they are very happy to be here with the rest of us! And WE are so happy to have them!

Soup & a Movie Returns!

This year’s Lenten Series will be a joint ven-ture between the Education & Spiritual Growth Area and the Fellowship Area. Ra-ther than having our usual Time Out with the Vicar, everyone is encouraged to come to St. Andrew’s Story Fellowship Hall. Coordinators Liz Rea and Julia Hidy will combine efforts for a 5-week session on Tuesday evenings beginning on Febru-ary 28th and continuing through March on the 6th,13th,20th, and 27th. Each Tuesday evening, beginning at 6:00PM, there will be a light repast of two types of soup, bread or rolls and a dessert. Following supper, participants will take about 25 minutes to view a short movie or clip. A discussion session will then follow. This Tuesday evening event is open to our entire community and the coordinators are excited to announce that these discussions will be facilitated by Mother Gayle, teachers Tom Renick and Brandi Creswell and retired AP English teacher, Jonathan Sauer. Each session will be self-contained, so if you can’t make all 5 sessions, come as often as you can. Please invite your friends and neighbors (as well as current and former stu-dents) since these will certainly be lively and informative evenings! Please also note that there will be super-vision provided for children, so this year it will be easier for families to attend. There is no charge for the event. For further information, please call the Church office.

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper

A Big Success! We are please to announce that St. Andrew’s served 85 people and 5 meals were taken to our home-bound parishioners on Tuesday, February 21st at the annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Sup-per. Keith Foster flipped pancakes while Julia Hidy and her crew served the crowd. A total of $410.00 was collected and will be do-nated to The Well at Sunnyside. Thanks goes out to all of the people who helped make the evening a suc-cess!

Camper Scamper at Procter

It’s back! The 2nd annual Procter Camper Scamper. Join us for the 1K/5K Run and Family Cookout on Saturday, May 19, 2012. The race starts at 10:00AM. Registration is $15.00 (children under 5 are FREE) and your fee includes the race, lunch and a T-shirt. All proceeds will go to the Procter Summer Camping Program. Diocesan Highlights

In each month’s Red Door, we focus on one as-pect of our Diocese of Southern Ohio’s activities or ministries. This month we celebrate Granville, Ohio’s first “Feed the Dream Day” on January 16th, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Their hope was to gather one ton of food goods to supply the Food Pantry Network of Licking County. In just nine hours, however, the residents of this small town contrib-uted enough money and goods to add 62.5 tons of stock to the pantry! Instead of a “day off”, this certainly was a “day on” for Licking County and Granville! More information may be found on the Diocesan web site www.diosohio.org or in your copy of The Interchange.

Vestry Highlights

Vestry has recently voted to move forward to se-lect a landscape architect to help make recom-mendations for the expansion on St. Andrew’s Memorial Garden. Anyone with ideas should contact a member of the task team—Sharon Ma-vis, Bob Timmons, Bob Rea, or Mother Gayle. We are pleased to welcome Sharon Mavis to the Vestry. She has stepped up to fill a vacancy since Jane Ann Miller has had to step down. Financial performance year-to-date is generally consistent with the 2012 Budget.

Procter Center Job Opportunity Maintenance Worker – Procter Center is seeking a competent and responsive Maintenance Worker to help maintain our1200 acre residential camp facility outside of London, Ohio. The ideal candi-date will possess exceptional customer service skills, enjoy interacting with groups, and be skilled in home repair, maintenance and land-scape projects. This position is part-time Spring/Fall/Winter and full-time in Summer. To apply send cover letter and résumé to [email protected].

February Town Hall Meeting Fellowship: The Offsite Events Team distribut-ed a survey to receive ideas for 2012.

Evangelism & Church Growth: Coordinator Sue Timmons asked people to help place Red Door issues in various locations throughout the community each month to increase visibility.

Worship: Mother Gayle announced that David Hisey will lead worship music through May. It was suggested that the choir sit up front to help lead the congregation in singing hymns.

Pastoral Care—Coordinator Shirley Morrow announced that we now have a special fund for Funeral Meals. Contributions should be made to St. Andrew’s with the notation: “For Funeral Meals.”

Education and Spiritual Growth: Mother Gayle asked for adult volunteers (with computer skills) to help with a pilot program of Distance Learning for Spiritual Growth. Please contact Mother Gayle.

Outreach: Bob Rea reported that Brad Downs (father of the military family in our Good Neigh-bor program) is enjoying his new job at McKesson Pharmaceutical, a local pharmaceutical distribution company. The family wishes to thank St. Andrew’s for our assistance over the last sev-eral months.

Procter Sunday May 6th Again this year St. Andrew’s will celebrate our St. Andrew’s Saints and hold Sunday Morning Wor-ship at Procter Center. Mark your calendars and plan to attend this fun-filled day. More infor-mation will follow in the April issue of the Red Door and in the Sunday Bulletins.

National Day of Prayer

Holds Contest This year the organizers of the National Day of Prayer are holding a Logo and Essay contest. See all the details on the bulletin board in Story Fel-lowship Hall. The theme this year is ‘One Nation Under God’. This day transcends differences. “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord” (Psalms 33:12) This year’s National Day of Prayer is on Thurs-day, May 3rd. A local event is scheduled for 12:00 Noon at the Gazebo on the Court House lawn. Last year more than two million people attended over 40,000 observances.
