From the Pastor… This week we celebrate a Holy Day of Obligation; the Ascension of the Lord. This Solemnity and the weekdays from the Ascension up to and including the Saturday before Pentecost prepare for the coming of the Holy Spirit, as Jesus promised. The number of years ago I

stumbled upon the beautiful analogy written to help people understand the meaning of this Holy day of obligation. Years ago Richard Bach wrote a best–selling book called Jonathan Livingston Seagull. It was a fairytale about a young Seagull’s growth from childhood to adulthood. At a critical point in the story, two beauti-ful white seagulls appear and tell young Jonathan that it is time for him to take an important step in his life. Jonathan hesitates, but the two birds insist, saying to him, our school is finished, and the time has come for another to begin.” Jonathan suddenly realizes that it is indeed time for him to leave the familiar beach shoreline that he has become accustomed to as a young gull and to soar up into the sky, beyond the billowing white clouds. Jona-than takes one last look at the beach then with the two white seagulls at his side; he soars into the blue sky and disappears into the billowing clouds. As Albert Cylwricki points out in his book His Word Resounds, there is a striking resemblance between the dramatic episode in Bach’s book and the dramatic epi-sode in Jesus’ life that we will read in the Gospel sto-ry. Obviously, young Jonathan resembles Jesus. He had finished one phase of his life and had to begin an-other. Likewise, Jesus had finished one phase of his life and had to begin another. Likewise, Jonathan’s rising up and disappearing into the clouds resembles Jesus’ rising up and disappearing into the clouds. And, finally, the two white birds who spoke to Jonathan re-semble the two men in white who spoke to the Apos-tles after Jesus had departed. Whether Richard Bach intended it or not, this episode in his story helps us to understand better the signifi-cance of the important Solemnity that we will cele-brate this week; The Ascension of Jesus into heaven. Jesus’ departure is not the end of His work on earth. It is simply the end of the first phase of it; the phase that he carried out in a material body, visible to our eyes. Now begins the second phase; the phase that he

will carry out in a spiritual body, invisible to our eyes. The time for inaugurating God’s kingdom on earth is over. The time for spreading God’s kingdom across the Earth is about to begin. To put it in another con-text, Jesus has completed his work of preparing his followers for their mission of carrying Good News of God’s kingdom to the four corners of the earth. It is now time to send the Holy Spirit upon them to em-power and to guide them in this mission. This is what we celebrate this week. We celebrate the fact that 2000 years ago on the day of his Ascension, Jesus passed on to us the responsibility of carrying the Good News of God’s kingdom to the four corners of the world. We celebrate the fact that Jesus passed on to us the responsibility of completing God’s kingdom on earth: namely, the work of preaching the Gospel to the poor, feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, and caring for the homeless. In his book The Song of the Bird An-thony de Mello tells the story. He puts it in the first person to give it added impact. He says: “On the street I saw a small girl cold and shivering in a thin dress, with little hope for a decent meal. I became an-gry and said to God, ‘Why did you permit this?’ “For a while God said nothing. That night he replied quite suddenly, ‘I certainly did something about it. I made you.’” De Mello’s story makes the same point that today’s feast makes. On the day of his Ascension 2000 years ago, Jesus passed on to us the responsibility of com-pleting the work that he began on earth. He passed on to us the responsibility of completing God’s kingdom on earth. You and I, in this parish share this responsi-bility. Not one of us is exempt. Each one of us must decide how we can best carry out our part in this re-sponsibility. Perhaps this short prayer will help us to continue to do his work: Lord Jesus, as we prepare to celebrate the solemnity of your Ascension into heaven, give us new eyes to see your face in the faces of those who are in need. Give us new ears to hear your voice in the voices of those who cry out in pain. Give us new tongues to tell your story to those who have never heard it. Give us new hearts to share your love with those who have not yet experienced it. With a Loving and Grateful Heart, Msgr. Marucci, Pastor

SANTACRUZAN Sunday, May 19, 2013—1:00 PM

Santacruzan is a Spanish word meaning “ Holy Cross”. Santacruzan is a celebration of the exultation of the Cross. Legend has it that in 300 AD, Saint Helena searched for the true Cross of Jesus Christ with the support of

her son Constantine the Great. At the excavation site in Calvary, three crosses were found. To determine which was the true cross, Saint Helena had a sick servant lie on each cross. The servant was healed after lying on the true Cross. The finding of the true Cross was celebrated around the third week in May. The Spaniards brought the commemora-tion of the finding of the true Cross to the Philippines. It evolved into the Santacruzan and Flores de Mayo meaning Flowers of May. The month of May is also celebrated as the month of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The two celebrations had since been inseparable. This tradition has been handed down from generation to generation and is still celebrated in every part of the Philippines around this time. Please join us in celebrating the Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the commemora-tion of the finding of the relic of the true Cross by Saint Helena. Filipino Mass will start at 1:00 PM followed by the crowning of the Blessed Virgin Mary, procession of the Reinas, Ave Marias and Little Angels while Rosary is being re-cited. Reception will be held at the parish hall after the procession.

God will never, never, never let us down if we have faith and put our trust in Him. He will always look after us.

Mother Teresa House of Charity Status Update We are getting close! MSGR. MARUCCI’S HUMOR BOX… An elderly woman had just returned to her home from an evening of church services, when she was startled by an intruder. She caught the man in the act of robbing her home of its valuables and yelled: “Stop! Acts 2:38!” (Repent and be Baptized, in the name of Jesus Christ, so that your sins may be forgiven.) The burglar stopped in his tracks. The woman calmly called the police and explained what she had done. As the officer cuffed the man to take him in, he asked the burglar: “Why did you just stand there? All the old lady did was yell a scripture to you.” “Scripture?” replied the burglar. “She said she had an ax and two 38s!”

“Peace I leave you” The beginning of peace must be acceptance of lack of peace, just as the beginning of relaxation must be acceptance of tension….

Peace comes about through acceptance of truth; if we accept the truth of ourselves—the shifting truth of what we are from moment to moment—and constantly give it over into the truth of peace and wholeness in Christ, to which we have access in the church, then we shall be in fact in peace, whether or not we feel ourselves to be at peace. Peace is, then, something which enfolds us rather than something which we grasp….

Peace is being what you are, what you really are, what you are in God, what you are in obedience to the creative Word of God, the “implanted Word” which is the law of your freedom.

To be a peacemaker is…to declare the truth of God and the truth of creation; it is to announce that a fallen world can be remade. It is to proclaim that the oneness of God has taken possession of the fragmented world of sin….

Peace and unity are not to be achieved by paring down the complications of life, but by entering into the magnetic pull of God’s unity.

O God, let all the nations praise you!

“The meaning of Christ’s Ascension,” writes Pope Benedict XVI, “expresses our belief that in Christ the humanity that we all share has en-tered into the inner life of God in a new and hitherto unheard of way. It means that man has found an everlasting place in God.” It would be a mis-take to interpret the Ascension as “the temporary absence of Christ from the world.” Rather, “we go to heaven to the extent that we go to Jesus Christ and enter into him.” Heaven is a person: “Jesus himself is what we call ‘heaven.’” -- Magnificat, May 9th

All past Clergy, Religious, and Pastoral Staff, that have served at St. Andrew the Apostle will be invited to attend. In addition, all those who actively serve in our various ministries will be honored during this Eucharistic Celebra-tion.

This special liturgy will enable us to give thanks and to celebrate the many things we are grateful for and that includes the blessing of each one of you. It is fitting that we honor and celebrate our gratitude for you, our generous and faith-ful parishioners, and those who served faithfully in leadership in the past, at this Eucharistic table.

It is here that we find abundance in Christ, whose life and mission is our constant source of strength and inspiration.

Please mark your calendar and plan to join us as we celebrate

our call to service and ministry to the Lord and his Church!
