We antici- pated an easy day of riding 62.5 miles with a climb of no more than 1000 feet for the whole day. Then due to flooding, the RAGRBRAI route needed to be changed to go around Ledges State Park, and what was going to be an “easy” day became a “hard” day. Upon rid- ing into Ames the GPS on my phone took be around Jack Trice Stadium through a portion of campus under construction, then a residential area before finally, finally, finally arriving at St. Andrew’s. It appeared to me that we were miles and miles away from FOOD! And then… shortly after taking my first “Uber” ride to a shower at a frat, the community of St. Andrew’s brought us dinner and ate with us, and again early the next morning! It was ob- vious to our RAGBRAI team that relationships were a core value at St. Andrew’s! This year our RAGBRAI team commented on “that great congregation last year in Ames” without at first knowing I was serving as your interim pastor! Which is all to say it is especially appropriate in this year’s stewardship campaign to ex- pand upon developing relationships – relationships with God, within the community of faith and those outside the Church. This year we will expand the conversation – the need for people of faith to KNOW, SHOW and GROW! Please read inside for the schedule and more information on the campaign. These are exciting times for St. Andrew’s! Both our Southeastern Iowa Synod and myself are recommending that St. Andrew’s begin the formation of a Call Committee. I know re- cent years have been challenging and there is the memory of more members. For those of us with “new eyes,” however, like Candace and myself and friends from Des Moines, St. Andrew’s has never felt “small” or the sanctuary “uncomfortably empty” due in large part to the excellence of the liturgy, music and singing. I have served much larger congrega- tions but none with a better choir or make better use of the various settings within the hymnal. When Pastor Erika Uthe, Assistant to the Bishop was with us in last month she actually took pictures during the middle of the service of the choir and the congregation singing to post on Facebook and commented on both to the Council! Ask them! Quite simply, the Call to St. Andrew’s is an excellent one! Not only is St. Andrew’s an out- standing congregation, Ames is a wonderful community in which to live! This year’s campaign: Building Relationships – Know, Show, Grow isn’t just another fall stewardship emphasis, nor will 2020 be just another year. We are at a critical moment and time and I have every confidence that you will respond in marvelous ways so you may call a terrific new pastor! It continues to be a joy to serve among you! We are excited to have kicked off a new semester and school year with the middle and high school youth! We first met on August 28th and have since started our semester programming on Matthew 25 which included hosting guest speakers from Iowa State during September.
In an effort to actively build the community we would like for the youth and confirmands, each Wednesday this semester begins with a home cooked meal prepared by Kaitlyn and Blythe. Through sharing a meal together, we are able to mimic the gatherings of the early Christians, share in community across the two age groups, fill our bellies, wind down from the stresses of the day, and come together as a group for our nightly activities. After the meal, everybody works together to clean up the space and wash all of the dishes.
The middle schoolers and high schoolers celebrated Rally Sunday with donuts and an introduction to the theme for the semester. Our high schoolers have participated in structured Bible studies on Sunday mornings for multi-ple years, and we are excited to give them the opportunity to lead some of these studies in the coming semester. For each Sunday that we have Bible study, two of the high school youth will be responsible for leading the discus-sion with Blythe and Kaitlyn’s support. This will require them to read and think about the lectionary text in the week leading up to the discussion, meet with Blythe and/or Kaitlyn to discuss context/thoughts/etc., and take the lead on Sunday morning for their peers and the confirmands.
September Events:
Youth Out to Lunch - The youth enjoyed a final Youth out to (Brunch) for the summer at Perkins. This is always a relaxing and enjoyable time.
Confirmation Bibles - Each confirmand was presented a Lutheran Study Bible (Augsburg Fortress) with their name in the front that they will be able to use for confirmation, youth, and take with them when they graduate.

CROP Walk 2019
St. Petri Lutheran 30th Annual Turkey Supper
The annual CROP Walk will again take place at Brookside Park, on Sunday, October 13, and we are hoping for another great response from our St. Andrews' congregation. The CROP Walk is an ecumenical 5K walkathon which raises funds for food - and hunger - related projects around the nation, with 25% of the funds being given to local projects. The following agencies in Ames will be the recipients of these funds this year: Bethesda Food Shelf, Calvary Food Shelf, Food at First, Good Neighbor Emergency Assistance, Loaves & Fishes, MICA and SHOP. The Social Concerns Committee encourages our members to support this worthy cause by walking, sup-porting a walker - or - by pledging a contribution. Please sign up to walk - or donate - at the table in the Narthex after church through Sunday, October 13.
St Petri Lutheran Church in Story City will be hosting their 30th Annual Turkey Supper on Saturday, October 19th from 5-7. The cost is $12 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. The supper is served family style and in-cludes roast turkey, dressing, potatoes and gravy, sweet corn, coleslaw, cranberry relish, dinner roll and home-made pie. St. Petri is handicap accessible by entering the north door on the parking lot. Carry outs are also avail-able at the north door. All those planning to dine with us please enter through the main Sanctuary doors to the south. Please join us that evening at 804 Grand Ave.
Building Relationships
The next steps- Know, Show, Grow
One of the fundamental ways we grow in faith is through relationships.
Last year’s stewardship campaign focused on whom we develop relationships
-those with God, within communities of faith, and those outside the Church.
This year we will expand the conversation
-the need for us as Christians to know, show and grow.
(Oct. 13) KNOW. Be still, look and listen for God in the world. Be watchful for when the love and hope of God
can bring comfort and where like-minded people can make a difference.
(Oct. 20) SHOW. If we are to be a light to the world, and bring the good news to all, we must be willing to show up.
(Oct. 27) GROW. Growing in relationship with God, with people we do or don’t know, and taking the strengths
and opportunities of those relationships to spread the good news truly is one of our responsibilities as
believers in Christ.
(Nov. 3) Celebration of Faithful Stewardship (Commitment Sunday)
Come celebrate our commitments of time, talents and pledges with lunch after worship.
