Message from the Pastor Welcome to St. Ambrose ! We are so glad
you are able to join us today to celebrate The Holy Family of
Jesus, Mary and Joseph. The scriptures of Israel are filled with
many stories of barren couples who were miraculously granted the
gift of children by God. Surely the best known among these is the
first reading from today, from which Luke took inspiration when he
recounted the miraculous birth of John the Baptist to Zechariah and
Elizabeth, and the more miraculous birth of Jesus to Mary and
Joseph. In each instance, we are given examples or role models of
those who trusted in God. More than examples of those who trust,
they are models of self-surrender. They abandoned their own
presuppositions and prejudices about the workings of the world and
turned their lives over to belief in a God who can make life grow
where none ought to; a God who can turn death around into a new and
unimagined life; a God who can, today, take a tiny child of humble
parents in an insignificant town and make him into a light for all
the world. This is what we, as God’s holy family, are called to do
each day: to trust not in ourselves and the way we think things
should be, but to open ourselves and surrender ourselves in faith
to a God of endless promise.
Have a wonderful week—stay safe and well. Please keep me in your
prayers as you are always in mine.
Pastor’s Musings The new priest was talking to the oldest man
inhis congregation. “I am 97 years old, Father, and I haven’t an
enemy in the world,” said the aged one. “That is a beautiful
thought,” said the priest approvingly. “Yes sir,” the old man
continued, “I’m thankful to say that I’ve outlived them all.”
Spiritual Communion
As you temporarily participate at Mass in this different way,
you and you families are encouraged to make a daily Spiritual
Communion by praying: Spiritual Communion Prayer
My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most Blessed
Sacrament. I love You above all
things and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot
now receive You sacramentally, come at least
spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already
there, and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me
to be separated from You. Amen.

TODAY’S READINGS The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph
Lectionary: 17 Reading 1 SIR 3:2-6, 12-14 God sets a father in
honor over his children; a mother’s authority he confirms over her
sons. Whoever honors his father atones for sins, and preserves
himself from them. When he prays, he is heard; he stores up riches
who reveres his mother. Whoever honors his father is gladdened by
children, and, when he prays, is heard. Whoever reveres his father
will live a long life; he who obeys his father brings comfort to
his mother. My son, take care of your father when he is old; grieve
him not as long as he lives. Even if his mind fail, be considerate
of him; revile him not all the days of his life; kindness to a
father will not be forgotten, firmly planted against the debt of
your sins —a house raised in justice to you. Responsorial Psalm PS
128:1-2, 3, 4-5. R. (cf. 1) Blessed are those who fear the Lord and
walk in his ways. Blessed is everyone who fears the LORD, who walks
in his ways! For you shall eat the fruit of your handiwork; blessed
shall you be, and favored. R. Blessed are those who fear the Lord
and walk in his ways. Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine in
the recesses of your home; your children like olive plants around
your table. R. Blessed are those who fear the Lord and walk in his
ways. Behold, thus is the man blessed who fears the LORD. The LORD
bless you from Zion: may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem all
the days of your life. R. Blessed are those who fear the Lord and
walk in his ways. Reading 2 COL 3:12-21 Brothers and sisters: Put
on, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion,
kindness, humility, gentleness, and pa-tience, bearing with one
another and forgiving one another, if one has a grievance against
another; as the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also do. And
over all these put on love, that is, the bond of perfection. And
let the peace of Christ control your hearts, the peace into which
you were also called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of
Christ dwell in you richly, as in all wisdom you teach and admonish
one another, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with
gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or in
deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to
God the Father through him. Wives, be subordinate to your husbands,
as is proper in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives,
and avoid any bitterness toward them. Children, obey your
parents in everything, for this is pleasing to the Lord. Fathers,
do not provoke your children, so they may not become discouraged.
Alleluia COL 3:15A, 16A R. Alleluia, alleluia. Let the peace of
Christ control your hearts; let the word of Christ dwell in you
richly. R. Alleluia, alleluia. Gospel LK 2:22-40 When the days were
completed for their purification according to the law of Moses,
They took him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, just as
it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that opens the
womb shall be consecrated to the Lord, and to offer the sacrifice
of a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons, in accordance with
the dictate in the law of the Lord. Now there was a man in
Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous and devout,
awaiting the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon
him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should
not see death before he had seen the Christ of the Lord. He came in
the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the
child Jesus to perform the custom of the law in regard to him, He
took him into his arms and blessed God, saying: “Now, Master, you
may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my
eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in sight of all
the peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for
your people Israel.” The child’s father and mother were amazed at
what was said about him; and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary
his mother, “Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise
of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted —and
you yourself a sword will pierce— so that the thoughts of many
hearts may be revealed.” There was also a prophetess, Anna, the
daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in
years, having lived seven years with her husband after her
marriage, and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. She never
left the temple, but worshiped night and day with fasting and
prayer. And coming forward at that very time, she gave thanks to
God and spoke about the child to all who were awaiting the
redemption of Jerusalem. When they had fulfilled all the
prescriptions of the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to
their own town of Nazareth. The child grew and became strong,
filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him.

Consecration to the Holy Family Families today face many
struggles, both through cultural pressure and through the person-al
struggles that accompany family life. Despite these struggles — and
partly as a result of conquering them — families have great
capacity for love and joy, a joy that is strengthened through the
peace and truth found in Christ. To assist families in living out
this joy of Christ, Knights of Columbus Supreme Chaplain Archbishop
William Lori has composed a prayer through which families may come
together to consecrate themselves under the protection of the Holy
Family. We invite every family of our parish to engage in the
Consecration to the Holy Family. The word consecration literally
means "association with the sacred," and as such it requires a much
larger commitment than simply reciting a prayer off of a card. To
receive the full benefit of intercession from the Holy Family, one
must cleanse the body, mind and soul. The decision to consecrate
your family needs to be intentional and a process through which you
completely surrender to God through the Holy Family. You are
accepting the truth that salvation history was changed forever by a
family, and that through your domestic church, you are called to
live their example. Four suggested steps before praying the
Consecration to the Holy Family:
1. Discuss the importance of this consecration as a family and
why you are doing it. 2. Each member of your family is strongly
encouraged to receive the sacrament of reconciliation. 3. As a
family, intentionally choose something to fast from. The fast can
be for at least a week. As our physical bodies
are drawn to things of the world, it is strongly encouraged that
you fast from something that you would normally do or consume.
Fasting helps to discipline our minds and hearts to refrain from
secular activities and be more focused on God.
4. Prepare for the commitment you are making. Consecration to
the Holy Family is not a single event. You have chosen a way of
life for your family. You and your family are consciously choosing
to be a beacon of light. St. Ambrose parishioners will be invited
to make the Consecration to the Holy Family at Masses the weekend
of December 27th. Consecration prayer cards will be distributed
that weekend. Contact Bill Whiting at 561-368-6531 or email
[email protected].
