Fr. Joe . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Dear Saint Alphonsus family, Peace be with you. I hope this finds
you well and in good spirits during this time of troubles. As we
continue the rough journey through this pandemic, I would like to
share with you some of my concerns and the direction for our
parish. When our church was first closed, I myself and many of you
thought that this was just for a short time, maybe a few weeks. I
did think that we would come back and celebrate Easter like we
usually did. But soon after we realized that the pandemic would
last much longer than we thought, maybe a few months. When our
state moved to phase 4th of the reopening, and our church was
allowed to reopen, we all were excited and thought that things
would get better and better and we could go back to normal soon.
Again, we were wrong. Our country seems to go backward, many states
have to go back to the lockdown, and we painfully hear recently
that the number of those infected in our state has been going
upward again. This means we have not been there yet; our
destination is still far away and nobody can tell us when this
pandemic will end. This is a tough test for each one of us, for our
families, and our community. We are not allowed to give up; we must
keep going with strong faith in God. We need to come together and
do whatever we can to keep us together, to keep us going to the
end. I have often shared with you my family stories after the
Vietnam War when we faced much tougher challenges of poverty,
starvation, oppression, and persecution under the cruel communist
regime. My father was a good leader who led us through that tough
journey. How could we do that? We depended on God, we trusted in
God, and everybody worked together. With that experience, now as
the leader of this community, I want to journey with you through
this pandemic. I strongly believe that we can do it if we trust in
God and stay together. In the last few months, we have tried to
hang in there with the hope that we could get back to normal soon.
The PPP money and the generosity of many faithful parishioners
allowed us to do that, to keep everything the same. But now after
we realize that this journey is long and unpredictable, after we
used all the PPP money, we have to make some changes in order to
conserve our limited resources so we can keep going. We have to do
this otherwise we might not make it. Therefore, I need to inform
you of some necessary changes that we will make. After I consulted
with the Parish Council, some staff, the Finance Committee members,
and parishioners, I would like to inform you of two changes that we
need to make for now. We have decided to cut Saturday morning
8:15am Mass and the 5 pm Sunday Mass. I am fully aware that some
parishioners will not be happy with this decision, but we need to
do it during this time. I am sorry for any inconvenience this may
cause you and your family. Let us entrust the future of our parish
to the Lord and our Heavenly Mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary. May
God bless you all. Fr. Joseph Le

Parking Lot Mass Participation
to Receive Eucharist
We invite you to participate in Sunday, 8:30am Mass by parking
your vehicle in the back lot.
We changed to 8:30am that you can enjoy Mass
during the cooler part of the day! Please park your vehicle
along the south side of church across from the portico.
While in your vehicle, you can access an audio feed of the Mass
by tuning your
car radio to frequency FM88.1. (This Mass is not
live–streamed.)
At the time for distribution of the Eucharist, an assistant will
come out ahead of the Eucharistic Minister with hand sanitizer.
Even though you are in your car, please put on a mask at this time.
You will need to roll down your car windows and hold out both
your hands with your palms up. The assistant will spray your
hands with hand sanitizer. Then the Eucharistic Minister will give
you communion. The Eucharistic
Minister will be wearing a face covering/mask and a face
shield.
The assistant will also be carrying a basket for offerings
should you wish to make your Sunday donation in this way.
Please be patient because it will take some time to get to each
person. Thank you for the prayers you have offered for our parish
already! We know God hears them because we
could not have come this far without them!

Welcome to St. Alphonsus Liguori Parish 14
Feast Day of St. Alphonsus Liguori
Alphonsus Mary Antony John Cosmas Damian Michael Gaspard de'
Liguori, born in 1696, earned a doctorate in
canon and civil law by the age of 16. He gave up practicing law
to become a priest and was ordained
when he was 30 years old. Fr. Alphonsus founded the Redemptorist
congregation in 1732 which served
peasants in rural areas in Naples, Italy. Fr. Alphonsus’
greatest impact as a priest was to preach simply and
about kindness and compassion in a time when sermons generally
consisted of complex theology. At the age of
66, Fr. Alphonsus was made a bishop.
Toward the end of his life, Alphonsus suffered
immensely with arthritis which caused his neck to be so bent
that he developed a perpetual wound from his chin
pressing on his chest. He also endured a dark time spiritually
when his faith was attacked by fearful and
tempting thoughts, but he persevered through his suffering by
focusing on the suffering of Christ.
Alphonsus died on August 1, 1787.
Alphonsus wrote notably on moral, spiritual and dogmatic
theologies. His writings on Mary and the Blessed Sacrament have had
vast influence on Catholic devotion to both.
St. Alphonsus is the patron of theologians, confessors,
vocations,
and those who suffer from arthritis.
The Feast of St. Alphonsus Liguori will be recognized the
weekend of August 1 & 2.
A prayer space will be available near the baptismal font
from
for private prayer and veneration of the relics of St.
Alphonsus.

Young Adults presented by Fr. Michael Rossmann, SJ on October
16-17, 2020 at Bellarmine Jesuit Retreat House (Barrington, IL)
Many of us have a "fear of missing out," but we actually experience
freedom when we make commitments. There is a depth of joy that only
occurs when we go all in. Using the Spiritual Exercises of St.
Ignatius, Fr. Michael Rossmann will share how we can go about
making commitments and experiencing true freedom. Includes optional
time for small-group sharing. Register at jesuitretreat.org Virtual

before it can open. Although a significant amount of the
