Sunbury and Diggers Rest commuters will be able to access 73 new
Metro train services a week and continue to board most V/Line
services aer the state government backed down from hotly contested
public transport changes.
During a visit to Sunbury station on Friday, Public Transport
Minister Jacinta Allan said that from January 1 passengers would be
able to board all but two V/Line services the packed 4.25pm and
5.04pm weekday trains.
All Metro trains from 7pm will also be extended to Diggers Rest
and Sunbury.
e extra Metro services are in addition to 10 peak services added
earlier this year.
In just over a month, locals will have more than 80 extra Metro
services and access to almost every V/Line train that stops at
Sunbury or Diggers Rest, Ms Allan said.
e latest changes follow a long-running saga in which commuters
and community leaders slammed the government for ripping 200 V/Line
services out of the town.
Western Metropolitan Liberal MP Bernie Finn said the reversal of
the changes was a major victory for Sunbury.
Together we have fought hard and together we have won, he
said.
As reported by Star Weekly, a controversial timetable announced
by Public Transport Victoria in May removed Sunbury as a pick-up
station for Bendigo trains travelling to Melbourne in the morning
peak.
It also removed Sunbury as a drop-o station for evening peak
trains going north.
Both the Liberal and Labor parties had promised commuters
continuity of services following electrication of the line to
Sunbury in 2012.
A major survey completed by the Sunbury Train Association, which
was formed following an outpouring of complaints, found many
commuters would be negatively aected by the planned
restrictions.
More than 200 people attended a public meeting in Sunbury
involving Ms Allan in October. On Friday, she said the latest
changes meant Sunbury passengers would have the best of both
worlds.
Its a big win for passengers and shows the importance of having
a government that listens and invests in public transport, she
said.

Train backdown: passengers win

Wildlife volunteers have been praised aer rescuing four
kangaroos trapped in an uncovered minesha near Trentham.
e two-hour operation began aer bushwalkers noticed the nose of a
kangaroo appearing from a hole in Wombat State Forest about 6.30pm
on November 22.
A team from Five Freedoms Animal Rescue was called to help pull
the native animals to safety.
Operator Manfred Zabinskas said he was amazed that the kangaroo
had been able to get up high enough to be seen.
It was really weird because that sha was ve to six metres deep,
he said.
Basically they were just walking through the forest and they saw
this kangaroos nose poking up from the hole.
ey went to investigate and found there were three other
kangaroos down there.
Mr Zabinskas said the incident was made more unusual because the
minesha was partially covered by a fallen tree.
Its not really in an open position, he said. Its almost like the
kangaroos went

for shelter under this fallen tree and theyve slipped in. How
all four have slipped in is beyond me.
He said the roos condition indicated they had been down the sha
for at least 24 hours.
ey were pretty beat up, he said. e biggest problem we had was
that one of the kangaroos was really large, a male about 80
kilograms, and he was jumping to try and escape. It looks like hes
landed on top of the other kangaroos each time he did that.
One of the animals, a female, had to be euthanased due to
serious injuries including a broken tail, exposed bone and damage
to internal organs.
A joeys got a few broken bits including wrists and ribs while
the other male seemed to have mostly supercial injuries, Mr
Zabinskas said. eyre now being taken care of and were reasonably
condent they will do OK.
e rescue prompted an outpouring of support on social media, with
animal lovers applauding the rescuers and the bushwalkers who found
the kangaroos.
Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network data shows 1292 kangaroos were
rescued by volunteers last year, up from 1064 in 2013.

major part of that, he said.
We do have people come in who are all up to date with their

no money for things like food and petrol.
Mr Austin said it was crucial that people who found themselves
drowning nancially sought help early.

Many Sunbury and Macedon Ranges households are forking out more
than 30 per cent of their income for rent, Australias rst rental
aordability index reveals.
e report, prepared by national economics and community banking
groups, listed Kyneton and Woodend among towns where rents were
unaordable, with the average tenant spending almost a third of
their weekly budget on housing.
e report stated this was dened as housing stress, aecting
tenants ability to also pay for food, water, school and power
bills.
While average rents in Sunbury, Gisborne, Riddells Creek, Romsey
and Lanceeld were considered to be generally aordable, CareWorks
SunRanges manager Michael Austin said many renters were under
signicant nancial pressure.
Mr Austin said job losses and increases in housing costs and
living expenses were leading to more people seeking help from
organisations such as the Sunbury-based support service.
Figures show CareWorks helped 1215 clients in the year to
October, up from 1189 in 2014.

Steep rents put tenants under stress
By Matt Crossman
Bicycle safety campaigners have pleaded with motorists to look
out for cyclists and pass them with care aer a Riddells Creek teen
was hit by a car.
Bike Safe Macedon Ranges has also repeated calls to increase
funding for awareness initiatives and a feasibility study for an
o-road path between Riddells Creek and Gisborne.
Dana Frew said her son Darcy, 16, was riding home on Somerville
Lane, near Sandy Creek Road, when he was knocked o his bike by a
dirty, white Ford Falcon sedan.
While my son lay on the side of the road, the driver honked his
horn and drove o, Ms Frew said in a Facebook post that has been
shared at least 100 times since November 18.
She told Star Weekly that while a majority of drivers respected
cyclists, there are some idiots out there that think its acceptable
to play with peoples lives.
Darcy suered some scratches and bruises, but apart from taking a
hit to his condence is otherwise okay.
We were lucky it was a clear bit of the road, Ms Frew said.
Ms Frew, who reported the incident to police, said it appeared
to have been a deliberate act.
He was on a small side road and he could hear a car coming up
behind him quite slowly, so he had a quick look to see where it
was, Ms Frew said. He gured because it was going so slow, it was
going to turn, cause he was near a crossroad.
He didnt take too much note of it the next thing he knew he was
on the ground.
It just makes us very conscious that there are dangers out there
on the road, even if your children are very careful.
Macedon Ranges highway patrol Sergeant Geo Neil said people had
to be courteous of others, regardless of their mode of
transport.
Were in an area that cyclists enjoy riding in, and motorists and
other road users, generally, share that space, he said.
Bike Safe secretary Amanda Calvert said some drivers werent
getting the message.

e release of an independent investigation into Octobers
Lanceeld-Cobaw bushre has led to heated debate in State
Parliament.
Labor and Liberal MPs went back and forth last week aer the
inquiry found the 266-hectare planned burn that ignited on
September 30 had been inadequately resourced from the start.
e burn broke containment lines on October 3 and again on October
6. Close to 3000 hectares were eventually burnt. Four houses, 25
sheds and thousands of kilometres of fencing were destroyed.
Opposition leader Matthew Guy last week asked why Department of
Environment, Land, Water and Planning secretary Adam Fennessy was
in Lanceeld to apologise to residents on November 19, not Premier
Daniel Andrews, despite many previous visits to the town.
Mr Andrews said the government had never shied away from the
fact that things had gone wrong.
We are deeply sorry for the fact that errors were made, he
said.
ere were 22 recommendations, and every single one of them will
be implemented.
Responding to complaints about insurance processing, Mr Andrews
said 58 claims had been lodged, with 15 payments ready to be made
last week.
e rest will be dealt with as quickly as possible.
Gembrook MP Brad Battin took aim at Environment Minister Lisa
Neville, who previously said the grand nal Friday public holiday
had no impact on stang decisions.
e inquiry found 12 sta were rostered for the controlled burn on
October 2, compared to 30 the day before.
Ms Neville said the report made clear that risk assessment was
awed from the start.
ey under-estimated the risk, and that went to the question of
resources, she said.
It is not a question about grand nal Friday at all.
In a statement, Macedon MP Mary-Anne omas said what happened
with the planned burn was unacceptable.
Many residents and families are still dealing with the
consequences, she said, vowing to monitor the implementation of the
reports recommendations.

Another incident involving the boom gates at Gap Road in Sunbury
has reignited calls for a third railway crossing in town.
Police expect to charge a truck driver aer a boom gate was
broken when he stopped halfway across the crossing, leading to
major trac and train delays on Wednesday.
Motorists were stuck at the crossing for almost an hour aer the
incident took place about 4pm and rail services were disrupted
Sunbury Residents Association has previously called for a third
railway crossing, towards Vineyard Road, to ease trac
congestion.
As reported by Star Weekly in October, the Star Weekly in
October, the Star Weeklyintersection and crossing were not
mentioned in VicRoads latest priority list.
Association president Bernie OFarrell said ursdays incident was
further proof urgent action was needed.
Weve been campaigning for at least 15 years, he said. ey keep
saying it will be considered
well into the night. Witnesses said the truck driver appeared to
have been impatient with congestion caused by the notorious
roundabout at Gap Road and Horne Street.
Instead of waiting until he had clearance, he decided to try
hurry the cars in front, said one motorist, who did not want to be
named.
He stopped halfway across the tracks and when the boomgate went
down, it got stuck on his roof.
He decided to reverse back but ripped it in half.
but nothing gets done. With the population growing, theyve got
to get on with it.
About 27,000 vehicles travel on Horne Street each day and 18,000
on Gap Road. Vehicle numbers and boom gates at the level crossing
200 metres south of the intersection result in signicant trac
disruptions, especially during school and work peak hours.
A spokesman for Roads Minister Luke Donnellan last month denied
there had been indecision about the intersection, pointing to a
$15,000 planning study that began in June.

e state government has been handed some poor marks in a
post-election report card from the Sunbury Residents Association
(SRA).
But Sunbury Labor MP Josh Bull has released a list of his own,
saying the 12 months since the state election had been a long year
of hard work and great accomplishment.
Not surprisingly, the pro-split SRA marked the government down
for its decision to accept the advice of independent auditors and
reverse legislation that would have given Sunbury its own
council.
Broken promise Labor said in November 2014 they supported
Sunbury out of Hume, the report card said.
e SRA said the government also failed by allowing changes that
bar Sunbury passengers from catching V/Line services, and
criticised perceived inaction about the closed Victoria University
campus at Jacksons Hill.
e government was given a B for $3 million in future funding for
a science wing at Sunbury College, an A for the Melbourne Metro
rail project, and an A+ for cheaper zone 2 public transport
fares.
Mr Bull again defended the decision to abandon the Sunbury
split, saying other achievements include the $1.3 billion
Tullamarine Freeway widening, an extra $2 million for Sunbury
schools and a $2.3 million upgrade of Riddell Road.
is government has kept its word, Mr Bull said.

Sunbury scores own result card

Restaurateurs and shopkeepers believe that a Sunbury streets
reputation as a premier dining precinct will spread far and wide
following a $2.1 million redevelopment.
Fairy lights installed in trees along OShanassy Street were
switched on last Friday night, with Hume council and business
owners celebrating eorts to encourage people to spend more time,
and money, in the area.
Carmel Scerri, of Vics Food and Wine, said upgrades, including
new footpaths, a second pedestrian crossing and landscaping, had
transformed the street.
OShanassy Street used to be referred to as the dark little
sister of Evans Street thats no longer, she said. When people think
of Sunbury now, they think of the restaurants in OShanassy
Street.
Powerlines have been moved underground, and kerbs and drainage
upgraded as part of the project. Wider paths will give traders more
room for outdoor tables, umbrellas and chairs.
e council has also approved new policies to allow businesses to
set up permanent structures. Mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou said the
lights would help showcase the mature elms that are a prominent
part of the street.
ey will create a wonderful ambience as residents dine, and will
also leave a positive impression in the minds of visitors, she
said.
Humes recent works will help the Sunbury street be one of the
truly great restaurant strips.
Ms Scerri said while works had been an inconvenience for
shoppers and businesses, the gains would be signicant.
Before, people would say we cant get in here or cant get in
there, well well just go to Melbourne, she said. Now weve got a lot
of really good restaurants it draws them all in.

Were trying our damndest to do whats best for our town and were
doing it extremely well.
ats the philosophy outgoing Sunbury Community Health chairwoman
Mary Rush says led to the organisation being recognised as the
premiers primary health service of the year.
News of the major state award added to the celebratory feel of
the services 40th annual meeting last week.
Ms Rush, who will remain on the board, said that while waves of
population growth posed challenges, the award win was proof SCH was
meeting community needs.
We believe weve been an award-winning centre for all 40 years,
she said.
When you actually sit down and assess your organisation our
application was amazing in that we do so many of the things the
government wants health services to do.
With the support of more than 200 sta and volunteers, SCH
provides a long list of programs and services, ranging from early
intervention and dental to counselling, walking groups, diabetes
education and aged care.
Ms Rush said partnerships with Hume council, the governments
Healthy Together program and Sunbury Business Association continued
to help the service foster health-arming factors such as strong
families, social cohesion and mental health, as well as ght the
prevalence of risks such as obesity, tobacco, alcohol and drug use,
family violence, problem gambling and vulnerabilities arising from
low incomes or ageing.
Im most proud of how we are a very strong values-based
organisation, she said.
Our philosophy is all about connecting with the community we not
only say it, we do it.
A very healthy outlook
Ms Rush, who was full of praise for chief executive Phillip
Ripper and his team, said the service had also set itself up for
future challenges.
Population growth is going to test our services, absolutely, she
said.
It will be across the board, because we
provide services from birth all the way through to aged
care.
But now were a company limited by guarantee thats something that
gives us stability because weve been able to not be concerned about
the threat of being taken over by a large organisation.

Ripper. (Damjan Janevski)

A plan to ask Hume residents to pay more than $1200 to install a
car parking space in narrow streets has been labelled unjust and a
knee-jerk reaction.
Broadmeadows Progress Association member Sonja Rutherford said
Hume council had failed to inform the group of its dra parking in
narrow streets policy, or of an online survey asking for community
feedback.
e survey closed on Monday.e dra policy was created to
address
parking shortfalls on some of Humes narrow estate streets where
parking on either side of the street blocks through trac.
It also aims to stop residents from parking on nature strips,
which is illegal under the Victorian Road Safety Road Rules
(2009).
e dra policy includes options to address parking shortfalls,
including installing restricted bays on one side of a road or,
where the demand for on-street parking exceeds the space that is
available, installing indented parking on one side of the
street.
Half of the cost of the parking bays would
be paid for by the council, and the other half by property
owners. e cost of a single bay is about $2500.
My mouth dropped I couldnt believe it, Ms Rutherford said aer
having read the policy.
eyre just side-stepping the issue and passing it onto
landowners. Its not the responsibility of the existing landowner,
and people wont be able to aord it.
is is just a knee-jerk reaction to a very serious problem, Ms
Rutherford said.
e Broadmeadows resident said the issue in Hume was due to
developers being given
planning approval to build roads that are too narrow for cars to
park either side.
She said multi-unit developers are also building without
adequate parking spaces.
Sunbury Residents Association president Bernie OFarrell said the
council had failed to inform his association of its dra policy.
He said there might be some residents prepared to pay for
indented parking bays.
But in my view, most people would object.Hume councils acting
city infrastructure
director David Fricke said council is happy to talk about
on-street parking options.

Property prices at Gisborne jumped 26.8 per cent in the year to

Gisborne had the second-highest percentage jump across

A lack of stock is being felt at Sunbury, but Mr Dunlop said

HELP FOR EXCESSIVE SWEATING Excessive underarm sweating, also
called axillary hyperhidrosis is a common, annoying and
embarrassing problem. The good news is effective and safe
treatments are now available.
If antiperspirants dont give you the relief you need, your next
option may be Botox (also known as onabotulinumtoxin A). After
application of local anaesthetic cream, multiple tiny injections of
Botox are delivered to each armpit. This treatment is extremely
safe and very effective. Results can last from 7 to 12 months and
are repeated as needed.
The cost of Botox treatment for underarm sweating is now
partially covered by Medicare. Dr Belinda Welsh and Dr Cara

Sunbury Physiotherapy Clinic
Written By:Jace Van Der Westhuizen
APA Physiotherapist
20 Horne St, Sunbury. 9744 5066
Over the course of an average week in private practice,
physiotherapists see many injury presentations in the clinic
related to chronic overuse or poorly structured exercise programs.
When commencing any exercise program, it is essential that the
program is progressive and specific to your goals and needs. For
example, it is looking for trouble if you do not have a resistance
training (RT) background, to suddenly begin a random program you
have seen online that the professionals use. An example of this
would be suddenly starting a RT program 5 days per week and working
in a 2-4 repetition range without giving thought to sensible and
gradual progressions. This is ultimately a recipe for injury. This
concept does not only apply for RT, but any forms of training,
including running. One of the most common overuse injuries we see
in the clinic is shin splints that have resulted from a person not
having run in years, but then suddenly starting a running program 5
days a week, 30-40 minutes per session. From an injury management
and prevention perspective, it would be helpful if you ask yourself
the following questions before commencing any exercise program:
1) Is the program specific and functional to my goals andneeds?
In many cases, it does not make sense for manypeople trying to
improve their health and fitness, to be doingRT 5 days per week in
the 2-4 repetition range as the risks generally outweigh the
benefits. Training less frequently andwith slightly lighter weights
/ higher reps would be a betteroption.2) Is the program structured
in a progressive manner? That is, is the intensity level of the
program being graduallybuilt up, rather than overloading the body
with too muchtoo quickly?3) Is the program suitable at this stage
to my build and bodytype? For example, if you are several kilograms
overweight,it may make sense to limit running to no more than 2-3
days per week in the early stages, and attempting to lose some
weight via other lesser impact activities such as swimming or
stationary bike.4. Have I sought the input of a suitably qualified
healthprofessional to help me structure an appropriate program?

Now that its ofcially summer strappy sundresses and shorts
dominate the wardrobe but, the idea of shedding winter weight can
be a daunting one.
The good news is, its never too late to start on the road to a
healthier you. And with the sun out longer, you can use this as
motivation to update your tness regimes and get beach-ready.
Here are some tips to help you spring into shape this
summer.
1. Rain, hail or shine, dont sacrice your training regime.
Maintaining good training habits can ensure you stay in shape. If
an early morning run is not your thing, signing up to a gym to
train can ensure you never miss a work-out session.
2. Reduce your amount of sitting. Doctors recommend you shouldnt
sit for more than three hours per day, so preventing long times
seated can ensure you burn a few extra calories.
3. Give it time. Everybody wants fast results, but remember you
wont see results overnight. Depending on where you start, it could
take a few weeks; just remember not to let a lack of immediate
results discourage you from continuing. Dedication will eventually
see changes and when you do, your condence and motivation will
boost you to new levels.

Speech problems in young children are a challenge that highly
experienced speech pathologist Fiona Tremlett nds fascinating.
A qualied practitioner of the programs of the Hanen Centre (a
Canadian speech specialist research and training organisation),
Fiona opened her own practice at Sunburys Family Medical Centre in
2012. A local, she brings a wealth of paediatric knowledge to the
centre and is a welcome asset to the community.
She specialises in working with children under three who are
late in developing their talking skills.
Some of these children do catch up, she says, but for others it
can be a sign of more signicant communication problems or delays in
their overall development.
Late speech development can impact future communication and
social and literacy skills, she says.
Early assessment and action is vital. Its all about lots of
play, lots of patience and being genuinely interested in what and
how these children are trying to communicate.
Just like us, young children like to know that someone is really
listening to them.
Fionas base, the Family Medical Centre, has been bringing
top-notch health care to the community for the past 30 years, and
continues to rise to the challenge of meeting diverse health
needs.
Her much-needed skill-set further enhances the diversity and
professionalism for which the centre has been known for a long
time.

In the heart of Riddells Creek village, just a stroll to the
shops, medical services, public transport and schools, this double

throughout, the house features pitched timber-lined ceilings with

and dressing table combination, and the main bedroom has a walk-in
wardrobe as well as direct access to the main bathroom. A replace

this has a wall oven, gas cooktop, walk-in pantry and lots of
cupboards. A timber deck out back looks over the low maintenance
backyard, which has a shed. With the possibility of extension or

potential for commercial zoning.

19 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ DECEMBER 1,
2015
reviewproperty.com.au
Once part of a larger estate, marked by a heritage-listed hedge
out front and way down the street, this late Victorian Helensville
now sits on a lovely treed block of about 1985 square metres.
Entry through old wrought-iron gates is to the back of the
house, where theres the original stable, now a huge, rustic
entertainment room decked out with a stone-topped bench with sink
and a potbelly stove. An equally old storage shed and a carport is
attached on one side, a potential caravan bay on the other.
A wonderful giant peppercorn and brick-paved sitting areas speak
of shady
summer days, then its under a small verandah and into the
kitchen.
Updated, it nevertheless has an old-world feel, with parquetry
oorboards, a slow combustion stove, pressed metal splashbacks, and
an Emilia stainless-steel 900mm cooker under a steel-and-glass
rangehood.
Next door, theres a back entry vestibule (with chandelier), on
the right of which is a powder room, and an updated laundry with
lots of cupboards and bench space.
Then comes the updated bathroom, with pressed metal on walls,
black granite vanity unit and a chandelier plus a sash
window. These feature throughout, most with brass pulls.
Original Baltic oorboards head down a hallway, off which are two
bedrooms, the smaller suitable as a nursery or study, with new en
suite potential.
Ceiling rosettes, deep skirts, decorative cornices on 3.6-metre
ceilings, and cast-iron replaces with original surrounds are in
each of the bedrooms, including a lovely third bedroom which sits
to the right of the original front hall. The original large brass
lock inside the front door seems to embody the history of this
place.

Across the front hall, a large lounge room has all the period
features, including a replace and a gorgeous bay window.
A dining room next door to the kitchen is another charming room,
again with all the period signatures.
Lacework adorns a small front verandah, the roof has original
slate tiles, and the house, built on bluestone, is constructed of
solid concrete blocks which provide good insulation.
Surrounding gardens have many mature trees and the bones of
something special.
