A Bible study series featuring a close focus on the prophet Habakkuk. The prophet

Habakkuk deals primarily with the moral and religious conditions of his own people at the

time of his ministry. We’ll see how his

denunciations and warnings were not just abstract principles, but were local and for Israel.

We’ll see how his time compares with our own

and much more. Leader: Dave Upham

SONS OF ISSACHAR…

Understanding Our Times from a Biblical Point of View

Tuesday, August 23, 2016 Food & Fellowship 7:30 AM

Program 8:00 AM in the Fellowship Hall

This week, SOI brings a terrific film, "The Global Jesus Revolution"

by Joel Richardson, New York Times bestselling author and director of the

documentary "End Times Eyewitness". Richardson shows how present-day world

events, particularly throughout the Middle East, are clearly falling into alignment with

the words of the Biblical prophets concerning the last days.

But far more important than merely knowing about the end times is knowing what the

followers of Jesus should be doing about it. What are the primary issues that the

Church must focus on in light of all that is now unfolding throughout the nations? Last week, the

question was asked, "Should we be Activists for Christ or just present Christ as "turning the other

cheek"? Should we be involved? Or should we withdraw from this world since our eternal home is not

here but in Heaven? Come hear and see a provocative yet biblical approach!

One of God's best gifts is family. Contrary to what some may think, the American Dream of owning our own home or having a big nest egg should not be the goal, but rather, loving each other, caring for each other and supporting each other, even and especially through the hard times in life. "Heavenly Father, may we all not take lightly our relationships with each other, especially as we see things seeming to come apart in this world. Help us to realize the importance of

praying for each of our family members, committing them to Your keeping and guidance. We do thank You for material provision as well, but help us to put the material in the proper perspective. May our children and grandchildren see us putting You first, and may they do the same. May they be blessed to know You, Who to know aright is life and life eternal." Amen.

Executive Summary:Executive Summary:Executive Summary:Executive Summary: Right when we've lost our accountant, PBA is being audited! But Ms. Oi is making a remarkable recovery. In Kumamoto, site of this spring's terrible earthquakes, the churches have redoubled their efforts in broadcast evangelism. The roller coaster called "BJapan" continues to be on the upswing. New efforts at children's outreach at Kotakecho Bible Church. Tokyo's loss -- all four grandkids in Dallas. Greetings, on a hot rainy day in Tokyo. The Taxman The Taxman The Taxman The Taxman There's a crackle of nervous electricity running through PBA's office. And, no, it's not the thunder and lightning rattling Tokyo today in the summer heat. The "IRS" of Japan is here; PBA is being audited. We got notice about two weeks back, and have been running at a fevered pace trying to get all our paperwork ducks in a row. The taxman and his partner got here about an hour and a half ago, and will be our 'guests' for the next three days. Three of our administration/finance staff are huddled in the conference room with them, along with a rep from the firm that does our corporate taxes. Ten minutes ago, our staff poured out of the room, "I need the World Vision contracts...," "We need the paper work on the production we do for the Christian Reformed Church...," "I need the inventory numbers of Rev. Hatori's book..." After the staff scrambled to provide all that, every one headed back to the conference room, and the office is relatively quiet again. Except for that inaudible nervous energy crackling in the air. Thankfully, audits in Japan don't involve the General Manager. Neither my Japanese nor numeric abilities are up to the task. So, I'm sitting here at my desk, feeling a little bit useless, and grateful for a staff that is rising to the occasion. Also, very appropriate for a thunder-storming day, the phrase, "When it rains, it pours" keeps rolling around inside my head. As you may remember from our past couple of updates, we lost our very capable bookkeeper to a stroke in late March, right before we had to close the books on the fiscal year. That was an extremely difficult mountain to climb. Then we covered her position with other staff, but have realized they weren't up to the task, and already the books don't balance. We were just getting a handle on that, and we were hit with the audit. It's comin' down in buckets! The Miracle LadyThe Miracle LadyThe Miracle LadyThe Miracle Lady The silver lining is that Ms. Oi, our bookkeeper, has made a fantastic recovery -- we so appreciate your prayers for her. At first the doctors said, if she even survived, she'd be wheelchair bound and very handicapped. But she is walking, talking, out of the hospital and living by herself in her apartment. She's still got a ways to go. Her legs don't quite move as she wishes, and getting on and off a crowded train is still tricky. Also, while her emails are crystal clear, when speaking, a difficult concept can cause some confusion. But in the next few weeks, she'll start back at work part-time. Truly a miracle. "With His stripes we are healed." Earth QEarth QEarth QEarth Q----QQQQ----QQQQ----QQQQ----QQQQ----QQQQ----QQQQ----QQQQ----QQQQ----QQQQ----QQQQ----QuakesQuakesQuakesQuakes By now the news has faded off the world stage, but the earthquakes in Kumamoto (South Japan, very close to Nagasaki) continue to have deep reverberations here. It was an extremely unusual, on-going event starting in April, with over 75 major earthquakes and well over 1,000 smaller quakes. The earth is moving so much, people have gotten 'sea sick' on dry land, and everyone's nerves are on edge. The damage to buildings and infra-structure is wide spread. Buildings that could have withstood 1 or 2 quakes, just can't handle 75! A small association of Kumamoto churches sponsor PBA's "Light of the World" radio broadcast locally. The church that was 'home' to the association collapsed, and others were damaged. Like so many churches in Japan's outlying areas, they are very small, congregations are elderly, and they were at the point before the quake that they wondered if they could possibly keep up airtime payments. With the damage and other needs created by the quake back in Tokyo, we wondered if this was the end of the Kumamoto "Light of the World." We should have known God had other plans! One Christian from another part of Japan, but also a 'fan' of "Light of the World," felt God telling her to send a donation to the Kumamoto association. So she did -- $100,000!! The pastors in the association were dumb-founded, but (after re-re-reconfirming the donor's intent) have accepted the gift and have re-committed themselves to getting the Gospel out to their weary, stressed out fellow citizens -- 99.9% of whom still don't know the Savior. They've asked us to work with them in devising new strategies of outreach -- which we are delighted to do. The BobsThe BobsThe BobsThe Bobs They call roller coasters "jet coasters" here in Japan, (and The Bobs by old Chicagoans), but no matter what you call 'em, they're a wild ride. Kind of like Friendship Radio/BJapan has been... and so many of you have prayerfully and financially ridden those ups and downs with us. But for the past year BJapan has been scaling the heights. Almost on a dare from Trans World Radio, we gave shortwave a try and the results continue to be astounding. A single broadcast routinely brings in 100 responses -- phenomenal. And many of the shortwave listeners have started listening to our 24/7 internet stream of straight Bible-teaching programs.

But we did have one stomach-flipping dip in the rails this year, as it looked like once again we were headed for the

financial cliff. We ran out of money to pay for the shortwave broadcast and my partner's salary. Yet God is so

good. We have faithful partners in the US, and also received some large one-time donations. Then just in the nick of

time, we were introduced to a ministry in Singapore that wants to reach Japan, so we were able to help them secure a slot on a satellite TV system here. Not only does Japan get a new channel of outreach, but BJapan gets a

commission from the station for each airing, as well as production income as we help with editing the program, too.

I get to do that editing, so I work all day at PBA, and all evenings and weekends editing for BJapan, but we are thor-

oughly enjoying the 'view from the top.'

We're giving shortwave listeners lots of Bibles, and doing lots of follow-up, but so far as we know, haven't been able

to lead any of them to the Lord yet. Not unusual for Japan, but we really covet your prayers that the broadcast bear

lasting fruit.

Again, as you may well be aware, our little church's Sunday School 'died' when our

Nicholas and April (now in their 30's!) graduated from 'kiddie-hood' way back when.

There were no kids. But a few years back our pastor's wife and Aileen set out to

change that, and completely bucking the trend in Japan, we've had a great Sunday

School and kids' outreach, centered on the pastor's two kids and a crowd of their

friends. But now the pastor's kids are growing up, numbers were down, and there was concern about the future of our Sunday School.

So we're trying new things. Aileen hosts a "Mommy meeting" at our home, for moms with toddlers, making connec-

tions for the future. We've also started a 'Homework Help' club for junior high kids -- bring your homework to church,

and our adults will help you study! (Only in Japan!! I can't imagine that appealing to US kids :-) Posters and flyers for

local kindergartens are working too -- had 50 kids show up for our summer outreach when we expected only 35!

Please pray for all the seed being sown in these precious little souls.

Our daughter April and her family have lived here in Tokyo for the

past six years, while her husband Dusty worked at the MK school our

kids attended. But the Lord led them back to the States this

summer, and we bid farewell to Cai and Laz, our 5 and 3 year old

grandkids. The kids seemed excited to be moving to America, but

were very unhappy Grandma and Grandpa (mostly Grandma!)

weren't going with them.

But, as only our loving Lord could arrange, April and crew actually moved to a Dallas suburb, into the other half of

the duplex where Nicholas and his family live! He has two little girls similar ages to April's boys, and Aileen is thrilled at

the thought that her kids and grandkids are all living under the same roof! But we are going to miss them, and are

looking forward to the day when the four grandkids can be put on a plane for Tokyo and spend a summer vacation

with us

Blessings on you for reading this far. I'm always far too long when I write. We greatly appreciate your TLC and partnership as we serve Him here in Japan.
