Dear Friends, Continuing Education believes in sharing meaningful learning experiences—be it with friends,co-workers, neighbors or family. Our front cover highlights Emilio Briones and his daughter, Doreen, who have enjoyed many classes together from art to Spanish. This autumn, we invite you to share a cooking class with a friend, practice a language with your traveling partner, att end a Home Repair and Maintenance class with a family member, or join a lively discussion with your neighbors about Contemporary Issues.

Like Emilio and Doreen, I, too, shared a learning experience with my parents when we lived in Rome, Italy during my high school years. During our time there, I developed my love of art history, Italian cooking and language. I am particularly excited about our Leonardo da Vinci 500th anniversary celebration this fall. After all, he was the defi nitive lifelong learner! Join us for a fascinating lecture in English or Italian, exploring his life, art and legacy. See page 6 for our other Leonardo 500 events and look for the Leonardo 500 symbol throughout the catalog. Grazie,Luisa MottenDirector of Continuing Education

On the 500th anniversary of his death, r ead about Leonardo da Vincifrom Italian instructor and art historian, Annalisa Bellerio

1) How was Leonardo revolutionary in his day? How was he mainstream?Leonardo didn’t receive a regular education. He was self-taught, aware of his unrefi ned cultural background, but also aware of his inclination to direct exploration. The endless subjects he was interested in required the support of experience rather than academic knowledge. His distinguishing and revolutionary trait was the strict scientifi c basis he deemed indispensable to any natural, technological and artistic concept. Yet, he was a child of his time, deeply linked to his environment, roots, and cultural references. As his fellow artists, he always had to search patrons, and to adapt his services to their will.

2)  Why is Leonardo still relevant today? Why are we still talking about him? Why did/does he get so much press when there were people equally as talented as he whom we’ve never heard of?

Despite the million pages written about Leonardo over the centuries, his is still “a deep and dark mirror”. He was curious in an impressive variety of disciplines and eager to go deep into each of them, asking crucial questions and fi nding answers often hundreds of years ahead of his time. He was not a brilliant specialist. He was interested in the whole, and never satisfi ed with his achievements.

3) How do we see his in uence in the modern-day Warhols and Rothkos of the world?

Leonardo always refused to distinguish art from science, observation from imagination, and practical inventions from dreams. Such an attitude can be found today not just in artists, but also in scientists and entrepreneurs. What do these visionary innovators have in common with each other, and with Leonardo? They are modern people of the Renaissance, curious across disciplines, and able to make connections. Connection is where creativity happens.

4) If you were at a dinner party with Leonardo, what questions would you ask of him?

In his notebooks, Leonardo wrote about everything, and almost nothing about himself. If I could meet him, I would try to learn some more of his intimate life and thoughts, of his emotions, and aff ections. That is, what he always tried to hide.
