As the severity of wildfires have increased in BC over the past
decade, the need for preventative wildfire measures has never been
greater.
To effectively reduce wildfire risk, it is important that the public gain a
better understanding of what it means to be FireSmart.
Now, more than 100 FireSmart Recognized Communities in B.C. and
over 200 communities are currently involved in a FireSmart program.
FireSmart is backed by a vast amount of field, laboratory and
modeling research. Its methods have been demonstrated to reduce
the risk of losses, under even the most extreme fire conditions.
Collaboration between agencies, community organizations, and
different levels of government will better support key FireSmart
messaging of preparedness, prevention, response, and recovery.
A few simple steps can contribute to increasing a property’s, neighborhood’s, and community’s resilience to wildfire.
Our Purpose

Our 2020 Campaign
This summer BC FireSmart is running a fully integrated campaign. The
overall theme is focused on celebrity spokesperson Bryan Reid Sr. from
the hit HGTV Show Timber Kings, and his personal story about losing
his business to wildfire.
Bryan is now an advocate for wildfire prevention and preparedness.
With a video series, digital advertising, social media advertising
and public relations campaigns, we will work to bring the value and
message of FireSmart to our province.
Coming into wildfire season, this campaign is designed to inspire
homeowners and community leaders to take action.
With your help we will enable community leaders to share actionable insights to people in their personal and community networks across British Columbia.

Why We Use Social Media
Social Media is a powerful tool that can be used to strengthen bonds
and initiate action in our communities.
In order for FireSmart disciplines to be effective, the public must see
themselves as part of the prevention solution.
Homeowners play an important role in wildfire prevention and can
reduce the risk of damage to their property by wildfire by following
FireSmart disciplines.
Social Media is a community building resource we use to spread the FireSmart disciplines across BC.

Tips For Interacting With FireSmartBC Online
When possible, integrate hashtags and account tags into the sentence
of your posts.
This will help the hashtag and account tag stand out, providing context, credibility, and importance to the sentence it is included in.
For instances where this isn’t possible, place those tags at the very
end of the post.
Examples:
• “The Rock Creek #FireSmartBC event happens this weekend…”
• “Rock Creek is hosting an event on behalf of @FireSmartBC to help homeowners protect their properties from wildfires.”
• “Rock Creek is working with local firefighters to educate homeowners on how to protect their properties from wildfires.
#FireSmartBC”
