Geoengineering the climate

Recommendations

5 Royal Society should work with partners to explore stakeholder attitudes to SRM

7.1 Royal Society should work with partners to develop guidelines for governance

SRM – stratospheric aerosols

SRM – marine cloud brightening

Marine clouds brightened by spraying sea water into the lower atmosphere.

Modelling the effects of SRM

From Caldeira and Wood (2008)

Page 14: SRM Geoengineering fileProject Director - SRMGI Kingston workshop 7 July 2016 . Geoengineering the climate Recommendations 5 Royal Society should work with partners to explore stakeholder

“Models consistently suggest that SRM would generally reduce climate differences compared to a world with elevated GHG concentrations and no SRM; however, there would also be residual regional differences in climate (e.g., temperature and rainfall) when compared to a climate without elevated GHGs.”Working group I, Chapter 7

IPCC AR5 on SRM climate effects

Termination Shock

Ross & Matthews, 2009

• Terminating (lots of) SRM would lead to a rapid warming

• Rate of warming much greater than without SRM

• Rapid warming would likely have greater impacts

Five main messages

1. SRM is not an alternative to mitigation

2. But only known way to stop temperatures rising at short order

2. Modelling consistently suggests that ‘SRM world’ might be a lot more liveable than a world of climate change

3. But that evidence is limited, there are many large uncertainties

4. Social and political dimensions could prove much tricky than the physical ones
