Recommended
• Replace 250-300 systems/year
• Laptops will increase in proportion to desktops
• Tablets still not mature enough to replace a PC or Laptop
• Apple systems:• Require approximately twice the support time PCs do• Do not integrate well into centralized IT management• Will always be a need for some Apple systems where PC’s cannot
do the job• Many people prefer Apple products over PC’s• Significant cost in time for users to switch platforms
Observations
• Meet Student and Faculty Teaching Needs & College Business Needs• Most business systems are PC based (Administrators & Classified)• Faculty platform conversion requires a lot of time and training,
allow flexibility
• Critical IT Investments/Needs• Improving network / internet speed/capacity• Computing security• Training – IT Staff and End Users
• District Major Software Moving to the Cloud• Makes the distinction between computing platforms irrelevant• Apple office cloud applications (iCloud) work on all hardware
platforms• i.e. NeoGov, TurnItIn, Student Application System, New On-Line
Learning Management System by Chancellor’s Office coming
Considerations
• Only Buy New Desktops or Laptops. Lowest annual cost. One computer per full time employee. Exceptions will require an appeal.
• PC and Apple purchases will be base models. Exceptions will require an appeal approved by Dean/Manager and non-pedagogical, non-business function needs must be funded by Department.
• Faculty may choose preferred platform. Mac or PC
• Administrators and Classified - PC’s. Exceptions will require an appeal based on critical business needs, reviewed and approved by management.
• Non-Standard Options and Accessories funded by Dept’s. Departments will fund all extra options, cases, extra monitors, ergo stands, cameras, etc.
