DIRECTORATE OF DISTANCE EDUCATIONvisit : www.svudde.org

The Directorate of Distance Education was started in 1972 as the Institute ofCorrespondence Courses to cater to the needs of students who could not pursue formalcollege education. These courses provide an opportunity to the students who discontinueeducation at an early stage to pursue higher studies because of lack of aptitude andmotivation or for want of economic wherewithal. Individuals who look upon education asa life-time activity and like to enhance their knowledge in an existing discipline of study oracquire proficiency in a new area may also benefit from the courses. Distance Educationis an attempt to diversify and proliferate academic beneficence far beyond the closeconfines of a classroom and to make it available to all those who aspire for higherlearning. It has a special relevance in an egalitarian society, in so far as it does not havethe “elitist bias” to education which is beyond the reach of many. Another advantage ofsuch a programme is that it goes beyond the confines of University Jurisdiction.

The Institute of Correspondence Course was upgraded as the Directorate ofDistance Education in 1994 as per the UGC norms.

ORIENTAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE e-mail : [email protected]

Sri Venkateswara Oriental Research Institute was started in July, 1939 by theManagement of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams with a view that it should be a first-rateResearch and Training Centre with appropriate divisions for the study of Sanskrit andother languages of the Hindu religion and Philosophy and of Hindu culture generally.Under the Management of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams, the Oriental Research Institutepublished sixteen volumes of the Oriental Journal and about sixty-four books in Sanskrit(20), English (8), Telugu (19) Tamil (17) under three series named Sri VenkateswaraOriental Series, Sri Venkateswara Oriental Institute Studies and Sri Visistadvaita SampradayaGranthamala, covering the areas of Kosa, Dharma sastra, Vyakarana, Scientific literaturelike Mathematics, Saiva, Vaikhamala and Pancaratra Agamas, Vedanta, Kavya, Stotraand Psychology. The Bharatakosa by M.R. Kavi and the History of Sanskrit Literature byM. Krishnamachariar Published from this Institute have become indispensable basic toolsof research in Sanskrit Literate and literacy criticism. The Tength All India Oriental Conferencein 1940 and the Fourth Session of Sanskrit Vishva Parishat in 1955 were held inTirupatiunder the auspices of the Institute. When the Sri Venkateswara University was established, for the encouragement of higher education and research in all branches of learningparticularly on Oriental learning, Sanskrit, Ancient Indian Arts and Culture, Architectureand Fine Arts, Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams handed over the Institute on the 1stNovember 1956, with a view to promote its activities in a broader perspective with wellqualified research staff. With limited resources and meagre staff the Instutte continued tofunction with the same zeal and aspirations with which it was started and could publish 43volumes of Oriental Journal and 30 books in English (3), Sanskrit (15), Telugu (10) andtwo volumes of the Descriptive catalogue. A Seminar on Andhra's contribution to IndianCulture was held in March 1972 and a National Seminar on the eve of CentenaryCelebration of Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi was conducted on 20-08-1997.

In 1979, the Institute moved to its own new building. It was named "Tiruppan AlvarBhavan" in sacred memory of Saint Tiruppan alvar who sang in praise of Sri Vishnu in theninth century A.D. The Library of the Institute contains 17,038 manuscripts and 43,000printed books. Each book in the library is purchased selectively on consideration of itsutility in the research activities of the Insitute covering all the fields of Indian tradition. Thereis a binding section to repair damaged books. But many of the books in the old collectionare irreparable, as the paper became very brittle and got damaged. So the Library is runonclosed access system. All possible facilities are provided for the bonafide researchscholars and learned public to consult the books in the Reading Room.

DIRECTORATE OF COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENTCommunity Development is an issue of global concern. It is an integral part for the

development of any Nation. Although the Universities and colleges in India are activelyinvolved in modes of teaching and research activities, they have their own limitations tocontribute their research findings for the development of the communities. Now, it is moreimportant than ever, that the Universities should have their strategies in contributing to thedevelopment of the community in their own possible ways. The Universities have anaccess to understand the world wide information technology and donor system which canbe linked to the rural community to the opportunities that are available globally. This willpave a way to tap the funds in getting a project for the progress of poor and disadvantaged. The University co-ordinates the projects, plays a mediator and motivator role, interpretsgovernment structures, donor intentions and procedures, thus empowering the communityto access these resources. The University also facilitates needs assessment, planning, training, report writing, account keeping and assists conflict management. Keeping these inview, the above centre has been opened to make S.V. University to take part actively inthe activities of Community Development. Apart from the Director, the Advisory Committeeand the Task Force Committee have also been constituted. They are headed by the Vice-Chancellor to execute and to monitor the Community Development Programmes.

UGC - SVU CENTRE FOR MST RADAR APPLICATIONS

The Mesosphere, stratosphere and Troposphere (MST) Radar is established as

a National Facility at Gandanki, about 35 Km from SV University. The Radar is a

sophisticated, state-of-the art ground based instrument for middle and upper atmospheric

research. MST Radar provides unique observational data to carry out frontline research

in atmospheric sciences. The MST Radar can be used to study middle atmospheric

dynamics, turbulence, jet streams, gravity waves, troposphere - stratosphere exchange

process etc. Considering the importance and potential of MST Radar for atmospheric

sciences, UGC created a Centre for utilisation of the MST Radar Facility by all the Indian

Universities through S V University, Tirupati. The Centre is known as UGC - SVU

Centre for MST Radar Applications. The centre is accessible to scientists and researchers

from Indian Universities working in the area of atmospheric sciences especially with

references to MST Radar. The centre is also supported by the Department of Space,

Government of India.
