Bear aware

n Be prepared. Learn as much as you can about bear behaviour before venturing into bear country and remember you might encounter them in unexpected places. n Be aware of your surroundings. Scan the area for signs of recent bear activity; if you see tracks, scat, tree markings or a natural food source, be extremely cautious and consider an alternate route or postpone your trip.n Never feed a bear – either intentionally or unintentionally. Properly dispose of garbage, wherever possible, in a bear-proof container

and, if camping, ensure unattended campsites remain free of bear attractants, such as food. n Respect all wildlife. Give bears and other animals plenty of space and do not approach them. No one should be encouraged to feed, pet or pose for a photo with a bear. If you want to take pictures, use a telephoto lens from a safe distance. n Never stop on the side of the road to photograph a bear, even if others are doing so. Many bears lose their lives each year as a result of preventable run-ins with people and their vehicles.

For more information visit bearsmart.com or bearaware.bc.ca. Remember: always be alert and “bear smart” in bear country. With your co-operation, bears and people can happily coexist. The bears thank you!

Here are some simple guidelines to help ensure that any such encounters are positive and conflict free:

Squamish is located

in prime black bear

country; whether you’re

cross-country skiing

along a local trail or

snowshoeing through the

backcountry, you may

encounter black bears.

Brackendale Eagle reserve Every year the community of Brackendale in Squamish is graced with the world’s highest concentration of wintering bald eagles. These majestic birds are drawn from all over the Pacific Northwest by multitudes of salmon spawning in the area’s many rivers and waterways. The eagles arrive in mid-November and stay until mid-February, with the largest concentration in late December to January, when literally thousands of birds can be seen! Best viewing is from the Tenderfoot Creek Hatchery in the Cheakamus Valley down to the Squamish Estuary. The most popular viewpoint is the Eagle Viewing Dyke between Squamish and Brackendale. env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks (Map 9, F19) Photo: wolfgang Zintl

West coast railway heritage park Home to Western Canada’s largest permanent collection of heritage railway cars and trains, Squamish’s West Coast Railway Heritage Park is a must-see attraction. When a group of “rail fans” formed the West Coast Railway Association in 1961 with a mandate to preserve British Columbia’s railway heritage, little did they realize that, by the 1980s, they’d be looking for a site on which to build an interactive museum. Today you’ll find awesome historic trains, exciting events (like Thomas the Train!)

and a chance to glimpse living pieces of B.C.’s rail history. 39645 Government road, Squamish 604.898.9336 | wcra.org (Map 8, D10-11) Photo: west Coast railway Heritage Park

Squamish, located just a short drive from

Vancouver along the Sea to Sky Highway, is

nicknamed the “outdoor recreation capital of

Canada” for good reason. Perfect for active, nature-loving

lifestyles and family friendly vacations,

dive into the following pages to explore

your Squamish getaway.

fYi5,000 years ago:The Sko-mish people live, hunt, trap, fish and raise their families in the Squamish area.

1792:Captain George Vancouver of the British Royal Navy camps at Shannon Falls, along the current Sea to Sky Highway.

1888:Scottish doctor Alexander Forbes discovers one of the world’s largest copper deposits at Britannia Beach; Alec Robertson becomes Squamish’s first non-native homesteader.

stawamus chief Ranked as the world’s second-largest granite monolith, the Stawamus Chief is a rock climber’s heaven. Since 1961 (when this previously “un-climbable” rock face was conquered by Jim Baldwin and Ed Cooper), this magnificent spot (known simply as “the Chief”) has remained a local favourite, internationally recognized for its incredible variety of climbs for every skill level. Considered a place of spiritual significance to local First Nations, you’ll also find solace

in knowing it’s possible to reach the summit through a series of hiking trails – and to gaze at the climbers from the parking lot below. env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks (Map 3, B7) Photo: Josef Hanus

Britannia Mine MuseumIf you really “dig” history, you’ll want to visit this award-winning museum in the former Britannia Copper Mine building (find it on the Sea to Sky Highway at Britannia Beach). This designated Canadian National Historic Site offers fun and educational tours right inside the old mine! From old photos, graphs and period drawings to mineral and ore exhibits, the museum is full of real history to ignite all your senses. Check out the visitor centre, theatre, children’s play area and outdoor pavilion. Finally, history is cool again! 1 Forbes way, Britannia Beach | 604.896.2233 | britanniaminemuseum.ca (Map 2, A5) Photo: Britannia Mine Museum

shannon fallsAt a height of 335 metres (1,105 feet), this cascading waterfall is the third tallest in British Columbia and offers a beautiful spot for afternoon picnics. Easily accessed from a well-maintained series of trails and wooden boardwalks, the whole family will delight in these picturesque waters. In addition to being a campsite for Captain George Vancouver in 1792, Shannon Falls has spiritual significance for the local Squamish First Nation. All it takes is one visit to see why this hidden gem is one of the area’s main attractions. env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks tourismsquamish.com (Map 3, A7)

1961:Adventure-seekers Jim Baldwin and Ed Cooper successfully scale the Stawamus Chief, bringing attention to Squamish as a world-class rock-climbing destination.

1994: Internationally recognized for its abundance of bald eagles, Brackendale sets a world record by counting 3,769 of these magnificent birds in a single day!

1956:The completion of a railroad between Vancouver and Squamish means outdoor enthusiasts – and others – can access the area’s rugged beauty more easily.

cultural JourneyTo celebrate their role as First Nations hosts of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, the Squamish Nation and neighbouring Lil’Wat Nation jointly developed a unique cultural and historical asset – the Cultural Journey Sea to Sky – which will act as a long-term legacy for the people of British Columbia, as well as visitors to the province. The journey includes a network of 30 interpretive kiosks located at scenic, historic and culturally relevant points of interest from Vancouver International Airport to the Sea to Sky Highway. culturaljourney.ca Photo: Sergei Bachlakov / Shutterstock.com

artistic activityThis scenic Howe Sound municipality makes an excellent base for finding striking original artwork and artisan gifts, as well as discovering emerging artists and enjoying the works of seasoned professionals. The area is also a hot bed of cultural activity, with lively events year-round celebrating a diverse range of interests, from art, music and dance to more industrial subjects like trains and mining history. W ith so much beauty to draw inspiration from, it’s really no surprise that Squamish has such a thriving arts scene. Local artists specialize in a

wide variety of disciplines: painting, drawing, woodworking, pottery, stained glass, jewelry, sculpture, photography, blown glass and fibre art. Many have private studios where their creations are displayed.

get outside!

There’s a reason Squamish is known as the “outdoor recreation capital of Canada.” Simply put, the Squamish area

is blessed with terrain that lends itself to all kinds of outdoor activities. From easy walks to big wall climbs, from mountain biking to road biking, golfing, fishing, horseback riding — you name it, you can do it here. Here’s just a sampling of the adventures awaiting you.

rock climbingSimply put, Squamish boasts some of the best rock climbing in North America. The surrounding granite cliffs attract climbers from around the world. If you’d rather just watch, head over to the main parking lot in Stawamus Chief Provincial Park for a spectacular vantage point. But if you’re up for giving rock climbing a try, there are a number of qualified guides and companies in Squamish that can help. Like any adventure, the local pros are your best bet for hands-on advice, gear and all the information you’ll need to make the most of your trip. As for peak crowds, the busiest months for climbers in Squamish are April to October. Photo: CandyBox images

fishing Before Squamish was deemed an outdoor recreation Mecca it was a world-renowned destination for anglers. The surrounding rivers, lakes and ocean contain a wide variety of fish. The Mamquam, Cheakamus, Squamish and Elaho rivers have been known to run thick with all five Pacific varieties of salmon as well as Dolly Varden Char and cutthroat trout. Just be sure to pick up a copy of the local fishing regulations to find out what is in season, and which species are catch and release only. Photo: keith Publicover

Mountain Biking Few places in the world compare when it comes to mountain biking. Located in a rainforest-filled valley surrounded by snow-capped mountains, Squamish offers an almost endless selection of incredible mountain-biking trails for every skill level and riding style. From gentle cruisers to easy cross-country routes, obstacle-laden trails and extreme downhill descents, much of the area’s incredible network of trails is thanks to the Squamish Off-Road Cycling Association (SORCA), a local club that organizes weekly rides, races and numerous trail-maintenance days. sorca.ca

atv & Dirt Biking Squamish provides an amazing playground for dirt bikers and ATVers, with numerous logging roads branching out in every direction. Beginners love testing out their new toys here, while more seasoned riders appreciate the plethora of rugged, backcountry trails. The Squamish Dirt Bike Association hosts a number of fun events throughout the year. squamishdirtbikeassociation.com Photo: Maxim Petrichuk / Shutterstock.com

hiking & sightseeingThe sheer variety of hiking and sightseeing opportunities in Squamish is truly staggering – and it’s all delivered with awe-inspiring beauty. For short walks on flat terrain, check out the Eagle Run dyke in Brackendale and catch views of the Squamish River and surrounding peaks. The trails that wind through Squamish Estuary are equally gorgeous, with tidal channels, mudflats, marshes, meadows and forests, as well as over 200 bird species throughout spring, fall and winter.

Perhaps the most popular trail in Squamish leads to the south summit of the Stawamus Chief, boasting 360-degree views from the top. It’s a relatively short hike (about 7 kilometres return) but, with 500 metres of elevation gain, the path has earned the well-deserved nickname, “Mother Nature’s Stairclimber.”

One place that really draws hikers is Garibaldi Provincial Park, where the Diamond Head access point gives way to trails leading to lush sub-alpine meadows and incomparable views of Mount Garibaldi, plus other ancient-volcanic features. Photo: Blazej Lyjak

Wind & Water sports Squamish means “Mother of the Wind” in the Coast Salish First Nations’ language – a name that encapsulates the perfect marriage of wind, water and land found here. Thanks to such ideal conditions, Squamish is widely revered as one of the world’s best spots for wind surfing and kite boarding. While numerous surrounding lakes provide ample space to practise, Squamish Spit at the mouth of the Squamish River is where you’ll find truly amazing wind-and-ocean waves (with a breathtakingly beautiful backdrop to boot).

From flying above the waves to playing in – and under – them, Squamish offers water activities for all ages and abilities. Why not start with a rafting trip down the Cheakamus River – an easy float with some small rapids that’s perfect for families. Those looking for more whitewater thrills can book a half-day rafting trip on the Squamish and Elaho rivers (class III/IV rapids included). Whitewater kayak adventures start at the introductory level and progress to the cartwheels, flatspins and stern squirting of an expert. Ocean paddlers also can explore the Squamish Estuary and Howe Sound by sea kayak or canoe.

SQUAMISH VALLEy GOLF CLUb Having served the Squamish community since the late 1960s, this 18-hole Canadian championship course (a local favourite) remains highly rated by players and publications alike. Besides the panoramic backdrop and stunning mountain setting, you’ll love walking the 5,943-metre (6,500-yard) grounds. With a full-sized practice facility and unique course features like old-growth tree stumps, Squamish Valley is open all year long, with peak summer play offering reasonable rates. 2458 Mamquam road, Squamish | 604.898.9521 squamishvalleygolf.com (Map 3, B5)

There’s no off-season in Squamish:

when snow dusts the trails and winds whip the waters of Howe Sound, winter recreation kicks into high gear with a tons of

cold-weather fun to keep you active. Visit the Squamish Adventure / Visitor Information Centre to learn about them all: 38551 Loggers Lane, Squamish 604.815.4994 | tourismsquamish.com (Map 6, e5) Photo: Dudarev Mikhail

Winter Wonderland

snowshoeingThe mountains surrounding Squamish get a generous amount of precipitation annually, translating into a ton of great winter snow. As soon as that white stuff starts to fall, snowshoers flock to Diamond Head in Garibaldi Provincial Park, which also happens to be a backcountry-skiing hot spot. Photo: Lane erickson

sightseeing adventures When the temperature’s cold enough, Shannon Falls transforms to one of the most majestic ice climbs anywhere (this spectacle is as unpredictable as the weather, though, so check with local climbing shops for conditions and tips). And, for a bird’s-eye view of the area’s mountains and glacier lakes, set up a flight-seeing tour with a local company (floatplane, fixed-wing and helicopter transportation can also be arranged). cross-country skiing With fresh snow on the ground, head to Brandywine Falls Provincial Park, approximately 47 kilometres (29 miles) north of Squamish off Highway 99, for some ungroomed cross-country trekking. You’ll have to cut your own tracks from the parking lot through this beautiful terrain, but the rewards are well worth it (env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks).

Nestled in the serene Callaghan Valley Just 30 minutes north of Squamish you’ll find Whistler Olympic Park, a host site for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Though this park is perfectly suited for a number of winter sports, 55 kilometres (34 miles) of professionally groomed tracks and trails make it a cross-country skier’s heaven. 5 Callaghan Valley road, Callaghan Valley | 604.964.0060 whistlerolympicpark.com

snowmobliingThe deep powder of Brohm Ridge just north of Squamish creates ideal snowmobiling conditions, with the area’s logging roads and alpine ridge and bowls providing the perfect theatre for aerial maneuvers. Home to the Black Tusk Snowmobile Club, the facilities (including the club’s mountain chalet) make for a perfect day or weekend adventure. btsc.ca Photo: Aaron Twa

Eagle viewing A unique winter highlight is bird watching at Brackendale Eagles Provincial Park. Between November and February the park is home to North America’s largest concentration of wintering bald eagles. env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks Photo: TMore Campbell
