EDITORIAL

JAMIE POST

I began last month's editorial witha "knock on wood" momentregarding May snowfalls, and forthose of you who received theMay edition of the SPURR amidstshovelling snow and navigating icysidewalks....in my defence it waswarm out when I wrote that ;)Regardless, June is here, the kidsare counting the days, vacationsare a go, the SPURR has one issueleft before an August hiatus, ourCommunity Leagues andRevitalization working groups arehaving their last meetings beforetaking a summer break, and whileI've still got your attention, I'd liketo take some time to talk about, ofall things, September.

It's been several years since con-cerned local business owners suc-cessfully pushed for the creationof the Stony Plain Road BusinessRevitalization Zone, and threeyears since concerned local resi-

dents laid out their hopes and con-cerns during the creation of theJasper Place RevitalizationStrategy. While gains have beenmade when it comes to the revi-talization's short term goals, themid-term gains and long-termvision have been elusive.Shifting civic priorities and anextenuating uncertainty surround-ing the West LRT corridor havetaken a toll, both on our dedicatedcommunity volunteers, and ourability to plan decisively for thefuture.

Although some work will continueover the summer while we're outand about enjoying the outdooramenities our communities haveto offer, let's spend some timethinking about September, and beready to claim it for our communi-ties when it arrives. We havefour community leagues, andworking groups dedicated to con-necting, building, and feeling safein our community, that will hit theground in September eager toaccept new volunteers, and inneed of community support todevelop a long-term, sustainablevision for the future of Glenwood,Britannia Youngstown, Canora, and West Jasper Place. In the

next several months we face theprospect of losing some of ourcommunity schools, and over thecoming years, the inevitable, inva-sive construction of the WestLRT. We've been patient, but wehave opportunity and resources athand. Let's all be ready to grabthem, jump in, and move JasperPlace towards a vibrant future.

Edmonton’s First Cohousing Development Earmarkedfor Glenwood

A new residential development project is being planned for the site at 15803 – 100A Avenue. Glenwood Cohousing will be a diverse, attainably priced development that offers a safe place with a sense of family, community, and culture. It will be comprised of a mix of twelve to sixteen attached residential units, a common house and other shared amenities in a delightful and beautiful environment. The proposed four-storey courtyard building will preserve as much open space for outdoor gardening, play, and fun as possible. Vacant for over a decade, this site will now be a welcoming part of the larger neighbourhood, its Common House a gathering place of warmth and comfort.

What is Cohousing?

Cohousing is a type of intentional

community comprised of private homes supplemented by extensive common facilities in a culture of sharing and mutual support. A cohousing community is planned by its owners. Future residents participate in the development process, deciding issues such as site selection, neighbourhood layout, common facilities design, and marketing. Typically, these communities range from 12 – 40 homes, which may be single family, townhomes, apartments, or combinations of these. The homes are clustered around walkways, plazas, courtyards, or gardens – encouraging social interaction; vehicles are kept to the perimeter.

Cohousing provides the option for regular human interaction without sacrifi cing privacy. Residents live in fully equipped private homes and share ownership of extensive common facilities such as a Common House, wood workshop, library, greenhouse and community garden. By

sharing resources people living in cohousing have access to many more facilities than they would on their own.

In line with the City of Edmonton’s efforts to revitalize the area, Glenwood Cohousing is seen as hopeful and regenerative, seeding the reversal of the recent trends. For more information, or to view conceptual drawings, please call (780) 298-0119.

BYLAW BUZZ

ANDREW JABS

Bylaw Enforcement Officerswith the City of Edmonton’sCommunity Standards Branchare busy in the communitiesaround the Stony Plain RoadBusiness Revitalization Zone.We are focused on identifying“nasty” property – the places inyour neighbourhood where own-ers display a serious disregardfor the general maintenance andupkeep of their yards.

Did you know that theCommunity Standards Bylawregulates the type of materialthat you can store on privateproperty? We’re not just talkingabout a little long grass (whichby-the-way cannot be left longerthan 10 cm.) Stockpiling itemssuch as wrecked vehicles, oldfurniture, mattresses and brokenappliances is NOT a time-hon-ored standard.

Being messy is pricey - thehoarding of scrap and rubbishtakes a neighbourhood down. The surrounding vicinity soonlooks awful and unsafe. Ownersand tenants may be fined $250for a mess and the City maycarry out a cleanup at a propertyowner’s expense.

The good news is that this district has a convenientsolution in the Stony Plain RoadCommunity Cleanup that takesplace on June 5, 2010. Let’s allmake a clean start this spring!

Cheers

JASPER PLACE REVITALIZATION UPDATE

WENDY KINSMAN(780) 495-0321

Building strong, vibrant neigh-bourhoods means not only devel-oping the physical infrastructureof communities, it is just asimportant to build social infra-structure. This is also critical incontributing to the health andwell being of the people who live, play and work in these communi-ties. To support these socialopportunities to connect withneighbours, businesses andorganizations, the Office of GreatNeighbourhoods founded theNEIGHBOURHOOD REVITAL-IZATION MATCHING FUNDAND SMALL SPARCS GRANT.

All community groups and busi-nesses who reside within theboundaries of the revitalizationcan apply for these grants andthey must support and help real-ize the vision of the Jasper PlaceRevitalization Strategy. Thisincludes Britannia Youngstown,Canora, Glenwood and WestJasper Place.

The Neighbourhood RevitalizationMatching Fund and Small SparksGrant, must meet five criteria:

1. Is the project feasible?

2. Advances the goals andobjectives of theNeighbourhood Revitalization(must meet one or more ofthe following:) a. Safe Streets

and Spaces – streets, parks, neighbourhood b. Contributeto a thriving economy c.Environmental well-being—walkability, pride, greening, sense of community d.Beautification and Cleanlinesse. Safety and CrimePrevention f. Programs andService

3. Benefit to area – creates apositive change or image tothe area

4. Fosters a sense of CommunitySpirit – brings communitytogether, creates connectionsand interactions and

5. Leaves a legacy – creates anannual event, physical change, develops community leadership;Develops skills; positive impact.

The City of Edmonton,Revitalization Coordinators haveseen some tremendous eventsoccur that supports neighbours, local businesses and not-for-profitorganizations. We just supportedthe Kids on Track annual event, who hosted a Mother’s Day Eventfor 80 Mom’s and their children Iam currently working with Tailz, who is planning the 2nd annualDogapalooza event in September.Last year, over 800 people withtheir dogs attended the events, were educated on important dogowner information, met theirneighbours and many small busi-nesses who provide services totheir pets.

Q & A with Michelle ChalifouxPublic Involvement ProjectManager – TransportationPlanning

Could you please provide uswith an overview of the pur-pose and process for the LRTWest, Public Workshops in

May? What will come next?

City Council approved the WestLRT corridor in December 2009.That approval set the LRT along 87Avenue, 156 Street and StonyPlain Road. With this approval, work has now begun to determinehow the LRT will “fit” into thesecorridors. That includes determin-ing where the LRT will be located(for example, whether it should beon one side of the street or in themedian), plans to manage pedes-trian and vehicle access in and outof communities, and identifyingspecifically where LRT stationswould be located. This work willtake place throughout 2010.

The workshops in May were thefirst phase of public involvementfor this stage of the study. At theworkshops, we talked about theproject history and how LRT fitswithin long-term future plans forthe City of Edmonton. We thenhad three specific discussion top-ics where we asked the partici-pants to review alternatives andgive us input on how these alter-natives impact the way they use, live, and work within the area. Thediscussion topics were LRT align-ment, station locations and config-urations, and neighbourhood/com-mercial access.

Information from the workshopsincluding the presentations andthe comments from the work-shopsare all online atwww.edmonton.ca/LRTprojects.So people who couldn’t make themeeting have an opportunity toreview what was presented andwhat others are saying. If youhave more to add, you can send incomments by e-mail [email protected].

Over the month of June we willalso be attending meetings andsessions set up by the many com-munity and stakeholder groups. We want to ensure we give peo-ple ample opportunity to reviewand comment on the alternatives.

Over the summer we will be com-piling all the input and completingsome additional technical analy-sis. We will return in Septemberwith another session where wecan present a proposed alignment– and we will report back on whatwe heard, what we could incorpo-rate into the plans, and what we

couldn’t incorporate (and if wecouldn’t incorporate it – why wecouldn’t incorporate it).

The LRT Concept Plan will begoing forward to Council forreview and approval in December2010. So, we will host anotherseries of information sessions inNovember with the plan that willbe presented to Council.

I understand that theTransportation Department isstill in the conceptual stages ofplanning the LRT expansionsfor the City of Edmonton. What does this mean? Whatare the next steps?

We are in the process of complet-ing a Concept Plan. A conceptplan provides an overarching planfor the LRT within the area, sothis means it will define wherethe LRT will be located within thecorridor (alignment), it will definethe major infrastructure require-ments (such as station locations, grade separations), it will define ifany major changes are needed tothe overall transportation networkto accommodate the change, andit will outline property require-ments. The Concept Plan must beapproved by City Council.

If the Concept Plan is approved, the next step is preliminary engi-neering. Preliminary engineeringis the stage where most of theaesthetic decisions such as land-scaping and station design aremade. There is more detail deter-mined on technical requirementssuch as utility impacts.

If the West LRT Concept Plan isapproved in 2010, the next stagewould be preliminary engineering.

THE DIRTY GARDENER

MICHELE HEBERT

I have had requests from readerswho have no garden on how togrow veggies in containers. Not aproblem. I grow some herbs, such as mint and oregano, in con-tainers only as they have a ten-dency to spread like crazy where Ido not want them to go.Containers work well for apart-ment balconies, urban rooftops, window boxes and even besidedriveways. They add a touch ofpersonality and pizzazz to an oth-erwise drab space.

Start with a container that is atleast 8 inches in diameter. Any smaller and the plant will get root bound and not thrive. Con-tainers can be almost anything as long as it has a drainage hole. Never use anything that has been coatedwith a preservative (such asgreen wood) or contained toxicmaterials or chemicals. Clay pots that are not glazed or terracotta potstend to dry out more quickly andrequire more frequent watering.Line the inside bottom of the potwith fiberglass screening (foundin hardware stores) or landscapefabric (my favourite). This keeps the soil in the pot, and unwanted pests such as earwigs and slugs out. If your pot has a saucer, raise it up out of the standing water with pebbles, gravel or river rocks, otherwise root rot canoccur when a pot is sitting inwater.

For apartment balconies or urbanroof tops, lightweight pots areessential. Check with your build-ing maintenance personnel forweight limits. Use a soilless pot-ting mix to lessen the weight.

Two key elements are essentialfor container gardening – ade-quate sunlight and easy access towater. Keep these in mind whenplacing your containers. Hauling a

In an effort to enhance community wellness andbeautify the communities surrounding StonyPlain Road, the Neighbourhood EmpowermentTeam as well as other key community partnersand volunteers are organizing a community cleanup on June 5th, 2010. We will be renting refusebins and strategically placing them throughoutour targeted area; three blocks North and Southof Stony Plain Road between 149th and 170thStreets. We believe this strategy will ensure thetargeted communities benefit from such a projectand help address the issue of accessibility, whichoften hinders community residents from access-ing similar big bin events. Also with the help of 50to 75 youth who are volunteering their time toserve the community we plan to arrange to pick up items for those who require greater assistance. heavy watering can through yourhouse isn’t fun. Water at leastonce a day in the mornings, moreoften if its quite hot and dry out.The container needs water if thesoil feels dry at least one inchfrom the top of the soil.

Don’t use regular garden soil incontainers – it gets too compactedwhen wet. Use a commercial pot-ting soil that is specially formulat-ed for containers. Add one partcompost or composted manure tothree parts potting mix. If yourpotting mix doesn’t already con-tain a slow release fertilizer, add awater soluble fertilizer or liquidseaweed or fish emulsion on aregular basis, as recommended onthe package. Fill the containerwith potting mix to within twoinches from the lip; the space isneeded for the water otherwise

the soil will drip out acrossthe top of the pot. Yuck.

Sow the seeds directly into the

pot, or transplant seedlings. When

planting tomatoes (works in the garden also) place a Tums tablet in the hole before placing your plant.

My Mom swears by this, and had a

bumper crop of tomatoes last year. Also, banana peels buried just under the soil

around the tomatoes helps the tomatoes also. Almost any-

thing can be grown in pots; use your common sense. Corn might not do too well. Smaller varieties of sunflowers look

great in pots. Swiss Chard (such as the Bright Lights variety) does quite well and looks like

a nice potted plant. A pot of herbs near a

kitchen door or windowis quite handy and smells heaven-ly. I keep a pot of mint handy forMojitos. There is nothing likefresh chives or dill with fish orpotatoes.

Pot up some edible flowerssuch as nasturtiums, pansies orlavender to add to salads. Plantamongst the veggies, if you like.Tempura battered, deep friedsquash blossoms are a realtreat.

Have a great summer, and happygardening.

Brado's Pizza15648 – Stony Plain Road

by Laura Nielsen

I would like to provide a restau-rant review on Brado’s Pizza as itis in my opinion one of theabsolute best restaurants I haveever eaten at. I cannot count thenumber of times I have eithertaken friends there for lunch orsupper as well as the countlessnumber of times I have orderedtake out food for my family fromBrado’s. We have ordered prettymuch everything on the menu. The food is always spectacularno matter what we order. I haveeaten chicken wings at manyrestaurants and I feel Brado’swings are the best by far. Thechicken caesar salad is anotherof my favorites, not to mentionthe seafood caesar. The pizza istremendous, as is the pasta. Theburgers are divine. And thenthere is the steak sandwich –can’t beat the price and the qual-

will be based on the quality ofwriting and may be edited forcontent and length.

Congratulations to the followingrestaurants for the greatreviews sent in:

ity is great. Love the dry ribs andof course the chicken fingers aresomething my children order reg-ularly. Towering nachos andmuch more. Whether you justwant a light snack or a meal –there is something for everyone. The servings are huge, so bringyour appetite and a few friends. The prices are very reasonable aswell. The service is always great. The staff are friendly and veryaccommodating. The owners goout of their way to make you feelat home and appreciated. Theestablishment is clean and has avery friendly atmosphere. Theyalso have delivery – so on thosenights when you don’t really feellike going out to pick up food –

they will bring it right to yourdoor with a smile on their faces. It is definitely a place worth expe-riencing - a true dining pleasure.A place I have been visiting forover a decade now and willreturn to many, many more timesto come.

“Recently our government announced the re-introduction of legislation to end the use of house arrest for serious and violent offenders. House arrest for serious and violent crimes offendsCanadians’ sense of justice and we believe that those who commit serious and violent crimes should serve their time behind bars, not inthe comfort of their homes.”
