Thank You Hunters andRecreational Shooters Arizonas rich outdoor heritage is en-joyed by all thanks to hunters like you,

whose purchase o hunting and recreation-al shooting equipment supports wildliemanagement and habitat enhancementin the Grand Canyon State. When youpurchase a rife, ammunition, archeryequipment, and other sporting gear, youpay a ederal excise tax and import duties.

over $9.3 million or game managementin Arizona. This money paid or game sur- veys, hunter education classes, wildliewater catchment construction, wildlie re-search and shooting range developmentand operations, among other projects.

    Hunters are heling

In the past our years, 80 to 90 percent o allhunters have participated in the Departmentsvoluntary lead reduction program by using non-lead ammunition or removing gut piles romthe eld in the condors core range.

The hunting community should be proud o thisaccomplishment, but we still need more hunt-ers to help. Please help us prove to our criticsthat we can solve this problem on our ownand that mandatory measures are not needed.

Hunters who use non-lead ammunition in con-dor range carry on sportsmens proud traditiono wildlie conservation. I you choose to uselead ammunition, you can still help by remov-ing your entire game carcass (including smallgame and varmints) and gut pile rom the eld.

Local landlls accept and bury animal remains.

    Hunters raise non-lead bullets

Copper bullets have superior penetration, areless toxic, and do not ragment like lead. 93

percent o hunters say that non-lead bullets perorm as well as orbetter than lead bullets on game.Non-lead shot and rangible bul-

lets also areavailable or varmint and

    smal l gamehunting.

    Condor Country: Why Non-lead Ammunition?

Lead poisoning is the leading cause o death in condors and the main obstacle to a sel-sustaing condor population in Arizona and Utah. At least 19 condors have died rom lead poison including three in the spring o 2011. They were ound with lead shot and bullet ragmentstheir digestive tracts. More than 400 cases o lead exposure have been documented since 19

Lead bullet ragments remain in game carcasses and gut piles let in the eld by hunters. These X-rays show hundreds o lead ragments (ragments appear bright white in X-ray) indeer carcass and gut pile. Condors are group eeders, so several birds can ingest ragmenrom one carcass or gut pile containing lead.

Studies have concluded that lead shot and bullet ragments ound in game carcasses and piles are the main source o lead in condors. To learn more about the condor program anor a complete list o non-lead ammunition available, visit: www.azgd.gov/condor.

The Arizona Game and Fish Deartment

and our partners ask you to be part o the

solution by using non-lead ammunition when

hunting in condor country (Game Manage-

    ment Units 9, 10, 12A, 12B, 13A, and 13B).

These sportsmens groups ask you to use non-

    lead ammunition in condor range:

Lead varmint and small game ammunition also ragments signicantly. Th

x-ray o a coyote illustrates the amouo lead (bright white ragments) let ithe carcass. Each spring condor leadexposures increase as they orage onanimal remains let in the eld by huers. Hunters can help by either usingnon-lead ammunition OR removingALL varmint and small game carcasserom the eld.

HOUSE ROCK BUFFALO HUNT SPECIAL NOTE:During the all and spring hunts at the House Rock Wildlie Area (HRWA), a signifcant portion o the hehas in the past moved to the Grand Canyon National Park where hunting is not allowed. Hunters are advised that i this occurs, their ability to successulharvest a bualo may be signifcantly impacted.
