Ihope by the time this message reaches you,most of our winter weather woes are behind us. Even more than in previousyears, I believe it is safe to say we are ready

for spring to arrive!The beginning of spring marks the beginning of PSSA testing. Each year ourstakes in these tests become greater andgreater. School districts are held accountable by the outcome on theseexams in many ways including targetedsupport options, professional develop-ment and school improvement planning.Below are suggestions to help your childfeel prepared to perform their best.• Arrive to school on time and attend eachday during testing.• Have a healthy breakfast including a glassof water.• Encourage your child to work hard, and not to give up when they encounterhard questions. Praise their persistence!• Focus on the level of vocabulary you use with your children. By increasing thelevel of vocabulary we use with our children on a day to day basis, we preparethem for all types of reading, both on tests and in life!• Talk to your child about the time. Some questions to ask:

• You can play for 15 more minutes, what time will it be when you have to stop?• We’ve been driving for 20 minutes, what time did we start?• You can play your video game for 35 minutes. What time is it now? What time will it be when you have to stop?

• Encourage your student to do their best, not just on PSSA but every day!Partnering together for your child’s education lays the foundation for a successful academic experience. Thank you for your commitment to this process!Together We Can!Pedro A. Rivera

estamos listos para la llegada de la primavera!El comienzo de la primavera marca el comienzode las evaluaciones de PSSA. Cada año nuestrasexpectativas en estas evaluaciones se hacen másgrande y más grandes. Los distritos escolares seconsideran responsables por los resultados deestos exámenes de muchas maneras incluyendoopciones de apoyo enfocado, desarrollo profesional y planificación de mejoramiento escolar. The District is facing a $7.7 million deficit heading into next school year. Much ofthis funding gap is a result of rising pension contributions, healthcare costs, andPLANCON (construction) reimbursements. As always we must be cautious with ourspending and make certain we are using our funds wisely. Several measures we havetaken include the closing of the Elm Early Childhood Center for next school year—preschool students will be relocated to the Martin Building, a healthcare audit—to ensure we are covering only those individuals who are eligible under our plan, software reduction, consolidation of positions, and requesting proposals from ourhigh dollar contractors to guarantee the best possible pricing. While many of theserising costs are beyond our control, we can guarantee budgetary decisions are made in the best interest of our students.

The Drowsy Chaperone(El Chaperón Soñoliento)

Students at J.P. McCaskey have been rehearsing this year's musical, The DrowsyChaperone, since we returned from the winter break. The Drowsy Chaperone boldly addresses a great unspoken desire in all of our hearts: to beentertained. If you've ever sat in a dark theatre and thought, "Dear Lord inheaven, please let it be good," this is the show for you!

It all begins when a die-hard musical-theater fan plays his favorite cast albumon his turntable, and the musical literally bursts to life in his living room, tellingthe rambunctious tale of a brazen Broadway starlet trying to find, and keep, hertrue love. Some members of the cast include: Yuri Benjamin, Sophia Echevarria,Kayla Hall, Luke Harnish, Landry Krebs, Amanda Reed, Liam Ryan, Jordan Shelley,Lorenzo Simpson, Keitaro Taylor, Ryan Vega, and Clay Verkouw.

Hand Musical PerformanceJanuary was School Director Recognition Month. To celebrate our Board of Directors, seven Hand MiddleSchool orchestra students performed at the recent Board Meeting under the direction of music teacherCara Weil. The Hand orchestra is nearly 70 members strong!

Wickersham Pledges to Prevent Bullying Wickersham Elementary students and staff recently participated in their Bully PreventionKickoff Week! Students wore bracelets and different clothing attire, discussed the harmful effects of bullying, and participated in grade level activities. One day was “PutBullying to Bed” and students were permitted to wear their pajamas. Another day was,“Bullying hurts inside and out!” Students were permitted to dress down and wear theirshirts inside out. An assembly was also held which included a performance by the chorusand personalized student speeches from all grade levels. Most importantly, all studentsand staff took the pledge to prevent bullying together!

La Wickersham se Compromete a laPrevención de Burlas¡Los estudiantes y personal de la Escuela Wickersham recientemente participaron en suSemana de Comienzo de Prevención de Burlas! Los estudiantes se colocaron pulceras yvestimenta de diferentes colores, discutieron los peligrosos efectos de las burlas, y participaron en actividades de nivel de grado. Un día fue “Pon la Burla a Dormir” y a losestudiantes se les permitió vestir en sus pijamas. Otro día fue, “¡La Burla Duele por Dentroy por Fuera!” Se les permitió a los estudiantes vestir ropa civil y que se pusieran la camisade adentro hacia afuera. Una asamblea tuvo lugar la cual incluyó la presentación del coroy discursos personalizados de estudiantes en todos los niveles de grado.
