The stars are potentially aligning for the Frazee boys’ golf team, which enters the 2010 season with much lofti-er expectations. First off, the Hornets return the Class 2A state‘s fourth-place golfer in sophomore Beau Hanson, and reigning Heart O’Lakes Conference champion. Secondly, Frazee has been bumped down to Class 1A, after competing in

the much larger-school Section 8-2A for the last two years. Thirdly, depth and experience is strong overall for the Hornets. “We are really stressing the team aspect this season,” said Frazee head boys’ and girls’ golf coach John Olson. “I believe we have a shot as a team and now we don’t have to compete against the larger schools.” The Hornets will move into Section 6-1A, which has schools their own size, instead of having to have to compete against teams such as Detroit Lakes, Perham and Roseau. Instead, Section 6-1A includes smaller schools such as Lake Park-Audubon, Henning, Barnesville and Underwood — just to name a few. But playing against tough compe-tition didn’t bother Hanson any, who won virtually every tournament he played in last year. He played well in the Class 2A state meet in Jordan last spring, finishing fourth overall.

This season, expectations are even higher for Hanson, who had a strong summer season. “As his confidence grows, he be-comes a stronger and better golfer,” Olson said. “Nothing bothers him and his swing looks even better this year.” But Hanson won’t have to carry the team by himself, with junior Josh Kertscher returning as Frazee’s No. 2 man and also a returning letterwinner. Sophomore Zack Ziegler also had plenty of varsity experience in 2009

and also played all of last summer. “Zack struggled with his long game last season, but he has grown up and is driving the ball better,” Olson commented. Depth will be a strength, with juniors Tanner Ellenberg and Sam Kellerhuis each vying for top four spots.

The Hornets also have a good num-ber out in seventh and eighth grades to allow Frazee to have junior varsity and junior high schedules. For the Frazee girls’ team, numbers are low again, but will have four out. Kerria Robinson, Brianna Schep-per, Jocelyn Giefer and Alexis Par-sons will fill the Hornet’s roster this season. “We just haven’t been able to get the numbers out,” Olson said of the girls’ golf program. “It’s been this way for a long time now. There’s just not enough bodies.”

With a talented and larger senior class graduating off of last year’s Frazee boys’ track and field team, the Hornets will be in sort of a rebuilding mode for the 2010 season. But there still will be experience and skilled athletes returning for the Hornets. “We lost a lot and will not be too deep this year,” said Frazee head coach Bri-an Tangen. “We may take some lumps (with only 17 out seventh through 12th grade), but we will be gaining experi-ence along the way.” The sprints and throws will be the strength of the Frazee squad, with se-nior Clint Johnson leading the way in discus and shot put throws. Johnson will not be available until about May, due to a knee injury he suf-fered in basketball this past winter, though. Forrest Jackson will be replacing his brother, Skyler’s, production in the sprints. Jackson had a solid year in 2009, but was the third sprinter. This year, he takes over as one of the faster Hornets on the track. “He will be one of the top sprinters in each meet,” Tangen said. “I think he’s pretty excited because he won’t be sprinting behind two other sprinters on his own team. He’s definitely look-ing strong.”

Sophomore Dakota Zick was on the state 4x400 relay team from last year and will also be running sprints and mid-distance races. Cody Nordquist will also be a key

contributor in hurdles and sprints. Relays will not be as strong as last season, just because of the numbers is-sue, but Tangen is hoping to see some of his younger athletes step up and fill

holes in the lineup. “We won’t be able to fill every event, so that’s a downer (for the team score), but it does open up opportunities for our younger guys,” Tangen noted.

BY BRIAN [email protected]

There is a good mixture of veteran and new energy on the Frazee girls’ track and field team. Senior Hannah Daggett returns after qualifying for state in the high jump the last two years, while fellow senior teammate Suzanne Vetter is back to anchor the distance crew. Daggett climbed to a height of 5-7 during last year’s section meet to earn her state berth. She will also be vying to qualify for state in the hurdles, as well, this season. “Her goal is to get back to state and earn a placing there,” said Frazee girls’ track coach Jim Jacobson. “She is improving in hurdles and her times are getting better.” Eighth graders Jessica Reishus and Ali Bachmann will join Vetter in the distance races, while freshman Chelsey Sanders is working hard to improve in the discus and shot put events. McKinzie Tangen also will be a 100-meter hurdler and will compete in the triple jump and sprinting events. The depth in sprints will be strong, so the 4x100 and 4x200 teams will be highly competitive during meets. Inexperienced athletes will fill the triple and long jumping events, while Vetter will compete on pole vault throughout the schedule. Overall, Jacobson sees the Hornets being competitive as a team through the season. “We might not have those top places, but we should be able to have multiple finishers in the top five or six spots,” the Frazee coach commented.

Competition for the nine starting spots on the Frazee baseball team will be a driving force for improvement during the 2010 season. The Hornets will have up to 20 players vying for playing time and that is a good prob-lem to have for Frazee head coach Bryan Gillespie. With competition provid-ing motivation, Frazee should be improved across the board — but more importantly on defense. “I am more confident in the defense than I have been my three years I have been coach-ing here,” Gillespie said. “It’s the most secure we’ve been de-

fensively.” Depth adds to the Frazee lineup, with Gillespie having more choices of filling a spot. Experience is also a key, with the Hornets’ three se-niors leading the way. Senior Matt Brower and ju-nior Brandon Vanwatermulen will provide the Hornets will an effective one-two punch on the top of their pitching rota-tion. Both were starters last year

and both had good success from the mound. “Matt is a quality starter, with decent velocity and good control,” Gillespie said. “Bran-don is a good control pitcher, who can switch up his speed.” Senior Matt Viste will also see time as a starter, with the pitching depth to be filled in with some inexperienced arms. “Our depth is unknown, but we hope to have up to four different starters each week,” the Frazee coach added. Senior Sam Oelfke returns as a three-year starter at sec-ond base, with Viste moving from catcher to shortstop. Junior Kody Sorenson will take on the catching duties, with sophomore Jacob Gal-

breght also seeing time behind the plate. When not pitching, Brower will secure first base, providing a big target and reli-able glove.

“Third base is completely open,” Gillespie added. The outfield is also shaken up a little, with Vanwatermu-len moving out and senior Dy-lan Stender moving from left to centerfield. “We have good team speed and they all can run out there,” Gillespie said. Brower will also provide good power in the Hornet lineup, with Viste giving a good consistent stick with his

.300-plus average from a year ago. Sorenson and Vanwatermu-len will also give the Frazee batting lineup some spark, as well. “We’ll try and get more and more aggressive with our base running and be more heads up,” Gillespie included. The Hornets also move from Section 8-2A to Section 6-1A, giving the opportunity for Frazee to play schools their own size. “We’ll still need to play well to win in the playoffs,” the Frazee coach said. “We’ll still be focused on playing our regular season games.”

BY BRIAN [email protected]

The Frazee softball team will be greeting their new class and section with plenty of new faces this season. The Hornets will have several of their core players back from a year ago, but will also be filling many spots with some green and inexperienced players. “We have some spots which will have experienced players in them, but

at the beginning of the year, we’ll be pretty green,” said Frazee head coach Dave Trautman. “But things will play themselves out by the time playoffs come around.” The Hornets have made the move from Class 2A to Class 1A, where they will play in Section 6-1A. It’s a move which allows Frazee to play schools more their size, but it necessarily doesn’t mean it will be an easier journey. “I think Section 6-1A may have just as, or stronger, pitching as our old sec-tion (Section 8-2A),” Trautman said. The section will carry strong teams such as Hawley, Parkers Prairie and Sebeka — all with strong and domi-nant pitchers. The Hornets’ infield will be an-chored by junior shortstop Kari Ship-man, who was named All-Section last

season. Senior Jaclyn Mickelson will secure the centerfield position, while other veteran presences include juniors Er-ica Ratz at third base, Sadie Stender and Chloe Streeper in the outfield. “The catcher position is still open, we have several young players vying for it,” Trautman added. Another unknown commodity will be at pitching, where juniors Emma Buhr and Brittney Blauert will see duty.

“Both are inexperienced, but hopefully they’ll develop through the season,” Trautman said. “Emma has good control of her pitches and can move the ball around the plate and Brittney can change speeds well. “Location will be important (for both) this season.” Freshmen Alexis Tappe and

Ashley Bachmann will also see action on the mound. With Shipman and Mickelson each posting batting averages of .400-plus last season, Trautman will try and sur-round them with batters who can get on base.

Pitching depth could be a key factor for the Detroit Lakes baseball team, since the Lakers will have two quality starters at the top of the rotation. Seniors Brock Johnson and Alex Guetter, a lefty, will anchor the Laker pitching staff, with each coming off of an impressive season in 2009. But who pitches behind the two hurlers will be important to DL’s suc-cess, as well. “Going into the season, pitching is going to be our strong point,” said DL head coach Steve Fuhs. “The key is, both Brock and Alex have more than one pitch to rely on and both threw strikes last year. “But we need four to five starters and after those two, we don’t have a lot of pitchers with experience.” Johnson possesses an overpowering fastball, as well as an effective slider and changeup.

Guetter has good control and a curve as an out pitch. But more importantly, both throw strikes. Seniors Brett Provo and T.J. Man-ning have some innings and they will get their chances on the mound early on in the season, as will Andy Fon-drick. Junior Ben Lindquist showed some good stuff in 2009 and also adds a left arm to the pitching staff. Jordan Manning and Nate Baker also have good experience on the mound, but on the B-team level. “(Junior) Connor McLeod also saw a few innings, as well,” Fuhs said. “But we will need everyone sometime during the season. I’d like to have up to eight pitchers and the talent is there.” For the first time in a long time, DL will also be very inexperienced at the catching position. There is very little varsity experi-ence behind the plate, with sophomore

Brian Labat having the first chance to solidify the position. “Hopefully Brian can take the bull by the horns at catcher,” Fuhs said. “He’s a good athlete and a big, strong kid.” Tyler Fode and Andy Pederson will be backups to start the season, as well. There are just a few players back who saw time in the field last season, with junior Connor McLeod anchoring the infield at shortstop. “Connor knows the speed of the game and he will be the leader of the defense,” Fuhs said. When not pitching, John-son will hold down the first base corner. Others who will fill in include Lindquist, Chris Nelson and Nate Kroh-ne. Fuhs will have to mix and match the infielders to see who fits where though, with many new faces manning the infield. The crew Fuhs has to work with includes Jordan Manning, Fondrick, Ryan Berg and Baker. The Lakers will also have a little experience in the outfield, as Ped-erson and Joe Thompson split time last year, and both are back. TJ Manning will make the move from shortstop/third base to the out-field, to supply some speed, while the newcomers will be Jon Gilson, Mark

Labat and Danny Engberg. “We just need to find players who can catch the ball and make plays out there,” Fuhs said. There are few at bats returning offensively, as McLeod and Johnson will anchor the middle of the line-up. “Who we put around them at the top of the order will depend on who can play defense,” the DL coach said.

Pederson and Thompson each have some at bats from last year, with TJ Manning seeing time last summer dur-ing the Legion season. “We won’t have a ton of power and may need two to three hits to score a run,” Fuhs said. “We’ll be better at hitting for doubles. But we’re going to be aggressive on the base pads.” Terry Eiter will be assisting Fuhs, while Jake Blow will coach the ninth grade and Mike Even the sophomore team.

Having a four-year starter on the mound should give the Detroit Lakes softball team a leg up in 2010. Senior Callea Butz returns for her fourth year of starting duty on the mound, giving the Lakers a consistent hurler to hopefully key a deep section playoff run. “Callea threw the majority of in-nings last year and she is improving every year,” said DL head coach Phil Kirchner. “She has sound mechanics, as well as a good fastball, changeup and riser. “The big goal this year is her loca-tion.” Butz had several games of posting 12 or more strikeouts, but that won’t necessarily be the biggest part of her game. “She won’t blow people away with her fastball, but she has good control and finding her location during cer-tain parts in the count will be impor-tant,” the DL coach said. Senior Cady Cartmell will also pro-vide solid depth behind Butz. “Cady has good speed on her pitches and a good changeup,” Kirchner said. “We can throw Cady and Callea every other game if we need to.” The Lakers also have experience back behind the plate in sophomore Brianna Seebold, who caught the ma-jority of games in 2009. “Her arm is an asset and she’s just a

good athlete,” Kirchner said. “She has figured out the game as a sophomore and will be in charge of the field.” Sophomore Jenna Lamb will back up Seebold. At first base, Cartmell will see some action, as will sophomores Amanda Young, Courtney Maneval and Lauren Johnson, and freshman Sadie Larson. “All those girls will be seeing time at either first or third base,” Kirchner said. “We are pretty green at both posi-tions.” But DL will be strong up the middle, with Seebold at catcher and seniors Donna Wicker and Shayna Dugger at second base and shortstop, respective-ly. “Donna is a solid defensive player and has a good bat, and second-year player Shayna Dugger has a big stick and a good fielder,” their coach said. In the outfield, senior Jalen Even will take on center field duties, while

senior teammate Amalea Branden and Lamb will each man left and right fields, respectively. Juniors Stefany Ianiro and Mikalea Martin, along with senior Jessica Johnson, will all see time in the out-field, as well. Lauren Johnson will act as the utility player, having the ability to play anywhere in the field. Offensively, the Lakers will be led by some power and for-average hitters in Dugger, Seebold, Bran-den and Wicker. “We do have a core of players who can hit consistently,” Kirch-ner said. “Base running will be a key part of putting pressure on the de-fense.” But the season’s success will come down to the effectiveness of the de-fense, Kirchner stated. “We need sound defense,” he said. “We don’t necessarily need to make

the extraordinary plays, but we need to make the routine plays. “The name of the game will be de-fense.” The Lakers open the season at Be-midji Tuesday, April 13, for a 5 p.m.

start, while the open home opener will be April 20 versus Perham at 4 p.m. The DL Invitational will be Sat-urday, April 24, starting at 10 a.m. at Snappy Field.

This is the season where the Detroit Lakes boys’ ten-nis team has been building to, with seven returning players, along with a good amount of skill and talent. To go with that, the Lakers have also been bumped down to the smaller Class 1A, where they will be competing against schools more their size. “The guys have some higher expectations,” said first-year head coach Wade Johnson. “We’ll still be the underdogs, but we have some good experience back to be competitive.” The Laker’s lineup will be deep, with eight seniors on the roster. One of those seniors, Jake Hartman, returns as a three-year starter and will hold down DL’s No. 1 singles posi-tion. DL also has gained extra talent from foreign exchange student Thieris Galdino of Brazil, who will be a contend-er for the No. 2 slot. Senior Tanner Duncan brings some good athleti-cism to the lineup, in which Johnson will be able to mix and match to fill his doubles teams. Other experience players coming back include juniors Isaac Fondrick, Jesse Meyer, Garret Duncan, Collin Har-ris, Levi Nordine and se-niors Chad Hanson and Keith Thornby. Johnson added senior Da-vid Jonason as a “promising newcomer”, as well.

“Our lineup is senior laden and we are actually pretty deep, too,” Johnson includ-

Section snuff from 2009 motivating Laker boys’ golfBY BRIAN WIERIMA

[email protected]

There is still a bad taste lingering in the mouths of the Detroit Lakes boys’ golf teams after falling short of the Sec-tion 8-2A title last year. But it’s that meet which will provide solid motivation for the 2010 season, as the Lakers boast a deep lineup with up to eight to 10 players vying for the top six varsity spots. “We have very good compe-tition on the team who will be playing in the top six for our meets,” said DL head coach Bob Gorden. “We do have an aggressive schedule once again, and each week we’ll have some top competition to fill the top six for meets.” The Lakers will be with-out one of their top golfers in junior Tanner Lane, who suffered a shoulder injury in DL’s Section 6-1A hockey play-off game. Lane had surgery on his shoulder, but Gorden is hop-ing he can get him back by May, so he can get his three meets in and be able to play in the section meet. “Hopefully Tanner will be hitting balls by May, until then he can work on his short game and putting,” Gorden said. “But it also opens up an opportunity for someone else to contribute, as well.” The Lakers will be led into the season by seniors Nate Ginnaty and Ross Mickelson, along with five other letter winners from a year ago — in-cluding Lane. Junior Connor Hedstrom returns, as do sophomores Rick Hutchinson and Tyler Baukol. Freshmen Karter Smith and Austin Rusness each were key contributors last season, as well. Others who will be vying for varsity spots include se-

nior Joe Hanson; juniors Bra-dy Eilertson and Eric Hanson; sophomores Nate Bausman and Brian Clark; freshman Ian Fritz; and eighth grader Michael Herzog. There will also be up to 13 other junior varsity players trying out this spring, as well. With a tough schedule on the horizon — which includes the University of Minnesota Tri-State Meet, April 23-24 — Gorden hopes to gear his team up for another section run. “I think we all have a lump in our stomachs from last year’s section meet,” Gorden said. “But we can only con-trol ourselves and our games. I did see this group get a lot better after playing a lot last summer, so I think they can follow up with some better re-sults.” Some improvements which the Lakers will need to incur include hitting more fairways and becoming better putters. “If we can take care of those two things, results will fol-low,” Gorden said. Last year’s experience will also be key, even though DL is still pretty young, with only three seniors and four juniors out. “Last year, we had some pretty good players who were green, but this season they are expecting more out of them-selves,” the DL coach stated. The section has added Haw-

ley, Wadena-Deer Creek and Bagley, while Roseau is the defending champion. The Lakers will host their Northwest Tournament at the Detroit Country Club, May 14-15. They will also host the Mid-

State Conference Meet May 18 at the DCC, and an invite May 25. The Sub-Section meet is at Wildflower Golf Course May 27, and the Section meet is at the Longbow Golf Course in Walker on June 1.

A new rule has been added allowing coaches to coach on the course during meets, just not when a golfer is in the bunker or on the green. Also, coaches will not be al-lowed to play during a meet.

The 2010 deTroiT lakes boys’ golf Team includes (L to R) Row 1: Nate Bausman, Tyler Baukol, Rick Hutchinson, Ross Mickelson. Row 2: Austin Rusness, Michael Herzog, Brady Eilertson, Andy Schrupp Row 3: Nate Ginnaty, Tanner (Bar Down) Lane, Jackson Agather, Brian Clark, Eric Hanson. Missing: Connor Hedstrom, Karter Smith.

DL girls’ golf young, but talentedBY BRIAN WIERIMA

[email protected]

There could be some sneak-ing up on opponents this sea-son for the Detroit Lakes girls’ golf team. On paper, it may look like a rebuilding year, with no se-niors or juniors on the team. But there is experience and talent nonetheless. “I think there is a lot of po-tential on the team,” said DL head coach Jen Hendrickson. “It may look like a rebuilding type of year, but I think we’ll be pretty competitive.” The Lakers do have some seasoning back in eighth grad-ers Maddie Tschider (who

missed state last year by three strokes) and Trisa Hutchin-son, along with sophomores Courtney Hedstrom and Ash-ley Friesen. Others who will be vy-ing for starting spots include eighth graders Natalie Roth and Emma Thompson and sev-enth grader Sidney Busker. “We have a huge number of middle school golfers (30) out too,” Hendrickson added. “Age-wise, we are very young, but they do have some experi-ence and I’m impressed with how much they went out and played last summer.” With very little pressure on the team, Hendrickson wants to see improvement, but also

wants the girls to have fun at meets and enjoy the season. “The girls are not feeling the pressure, but they are ex-cited and still want to be com-petitive in the tournaments,” the DL coach said. “There will be some good opportunities for them against some good competition. “The fire is still in them.” The Lakers will host their invite at the Detroit Country Club May 25, while the Sub-Section meet is May 27 at Wildflower. The Section 8-2A meet will be held at Longbow Golf Course in Walker, June 1, while the state event is in Jor-dan, June 16-17.

The 2010 deTroiT lakes girls’ golf Team includes (L to R) Ashley Friesen, Natalie Roth, Trisa Hutchinson, Emma Thompson. Miss-ing: Courtney Hedstrom, Matty Tschider, Sydney Busker, Katie Larson.

Laker girls’ track and field has big numbers outBY BRIAN WIERIMA

[email protected]

There will be a schematic nightmare in store for the Detroit Lakes girls’ track and field team’s coaching staff for the 2010 season, but it’s one of the best problems to have for the Lakers. The DL girls’ coaching staff — led by head coach Mike La-bine — would have it no other way, as the Lakers boast an all-time high in numbers out with 65.

“I’m excited about it and it’s awesome to have this many kids be a part of the team,” Labine said. “It maybe a management nightmare, but it’s something we’ll definitely deal with.” Experience levels are all over the board for the Lakers, from experienced to green, from seventh grade to se-niors. “They all don’t have the

same ability and not all of them are in the same place now,” Labine said. “We’ve got experience athletes to new ones.” But with the high numbers, the older athletes are also helping get the Lakers back to where they once were — win-ning Mid-State Conference titles and state True Team berths. “We had won 16 Mid-State championships in a row before last year and were seven-time state True Team entrants,”

Labine said. “We had lost some of that (swagger) the last few years, but it looks like we are getting some of that back with this group.” Although the Lakers don’t have that dominant ath-

lete who can win events in ev-ery meet, they do have a solid upper echelon of athletes who can place high on a consistent basis. Also with the high numbers out to add depth, the team as-pect for the Lakers should be strong. A big part of the team points will come from the Laker gym-nastics team, which had an-other stellar winter season.

Junior Bre Halbur returns off an injury-plagued 2009 sea-son and will anchor the long jump event and possibly help out in the hurdles. Halbur won the tough Sec-tion 8-2A long jump title two years ago, while taking third last season, despite having a bad ankle. “If Bre can stay healthy, she is a phenomenal athlete,” Labine said. “We don’t know if she can hurdle yet, but she should be able to have a strong season in the long jump.” Gymnasts Amy Crawford, Jess Stelter, Natalie Hoffert and Kyley Foster also will play important roles on the team. Stelter is DL’s top hurdler and a strong jumper, while Crawford is the Laker’s best pole vaulter. “Amy saw big success on pole vault at the end of last year and there’s no question she’s a great athlete,” Labine said of Crawford, who won DL’s first-ever gymnastics championship after taking the Class 1A beam title. “Natalie Hoffert is one of our top sprint-ers, as well.” The Lakers also return se-nior Kayla Lang, who had as strong offseason working on the high jump. “Every year, Kayla has been around the 4-10 to 5-0 range in

the high jump and after how hard she worked this winter, I see her hitting that early on in the season,” Labine said. “She can become a top-notch high jumper.” Senior Lauren Kauffman will also be a big factor in the high jump. Senior Bethany Stolten-burg will anchor the throwing events, after learning under state qualifier Ally Nielsen from a year ago. Junior Jen Matter will also join Stoltenburg in the disc and shot put after missing last season with a knee injury. Freshman Rose Jackson emerged in the sprints for the Lakers last season and with a full season of experience, she should only be better this time around, Labine said. In distance, sheer numbers will improve the 800 through 3,200 meter running events. “Our quality is better than we’ve had in a long time on our distance crew,” Labine said. Junior Marie Yokan and Abby Ullyott each will lead the way in distance, with up to a dozen others filling in the rest. “We have options now there and having that flexibility will only make the team better,” the DL coach stated.

The expectations are high-er for this year’s squad, but the road is tougher to the state True Team, after 13-time sec-tion champion Sartell has been added to Section 8. “We also have teams like Staples-Motley and East Grand Forks in there and these are not your one-and-done type of teams, they are traditionally good every year,” Labine said. “And that’s where we want to get back to.” The Lakers will not have any home meets, with the track at Mollberg Field soon to go under a complete reno-vation. But with the new track, the Lakers will have a good pos-sibility to hosting such larger events as the Section 8-2A Sec-tion preliminaries and finals and True Team events. The Lakers also have a sol-id core of coaches, including Labine, Steve Zamzo (boys’ head coach), John Freeman, Bill Kvebak, Lisa Conzemius, Maggie Doll, Ryan Zunich and Pete Paulson (the last three are all volunteers). “It’s huge to have all these coaches helping out, especial-ly with the high number of kids out,” Labine added.

The 2010 deTroiT lakes girls’ Track Team includes (L to R) Row 1: Brooklyn Thompson, Brittney Eischens, Brittney Thomson, Kayla Lang, Lindsey Heinecke, Kyley Foster, Sophie Wood, Madeline Hoffert, Allison Berg, Simona-Liane Woodard, Shay Nielsen, Maddy Schiller. Row 2: Emma Wood, Megan Lindquist, Lore Anne Johnson, Heidi Nelson, Kiki Schumacher, McKenzie Oistad, Callee Sinclaire, Alethia St. John, Hanna Ullyott, Karli Kerzman, Rose Jackson, Haley Foster, Lauren Kauffman. Row 3: Morgan Eiter, Natalie Hoffert, Jill Feuillerat, Lauren Olson, Kendra Posch, Emma Erholtz, Linsey Bjorgan, Miranda Schumacher, Elisa Stefani, Samantha Marihart, Chanitnan Panyasakulwong, Kate Vanhof. Row 4: Miranda Olson, Veronica Haverkamp, Celeste Ko-ppe, Shannon Goetz, Alycia Windingland, Anne Holzgrove, Megan Ostlie, Alexis Schermer, Andrea Jonsson, Arica Schuller, Lahren Somdahl, Coreen Roy. Row 5: Bre Halbur, Jessica Stelter, Amy Crawford, Katie Larson, Joelle Langworthy, Abby Krause, Tabitha Gray, Olga Busker, Bertha Matter, Rachel Musielewicz, Katie Milner, Olivia Johnson.

The Detroit Lakes boys’ track and field team is ready to go the distance — as in form 800, 1,600 or 3,200 meter dis-tance races.

The Lakers will be a force in their distance races this season — which includes the 4x800 — with a bevy of talent and depth out for the 2010 sea-son. “Distance will definitely be our strength this year,” said DL head boys’ track coach Steve Zamzo. The Lakers will have some top-heavy talent, as well as im-portant depth in the distance events. Leif Johnson will lead the way after a strong fall season

in cross country, with junior Dylan Ramstad-Skoyles close in tow. Pat and Wes Bakken will also be in distance to provide important depth, along with Luke Wiebolt, Travis King and Jason Stallman.

“We’ll be in the top pack and taking a lot of third through fifth places, not neces-sarily first,” Zam-zo said. “But our depth will make our 4x800 pretty strong.” The Lakers

do return reigning 200 sprint champion Charlie Wichmann, as well. Freshman Connor Collins

also returns in the sprints, along with freshman Montana Johnson. “But we’ll be pretty thin in sprints this season,” Zamzo included. Overall, the Lakers will also be young, with only seven juniors out and five seniors on the roster. That will open plenty of op-portunities for the under class-men to perform, so it will be a work in progress throughout the season for Zamzo and his coaching staff to figure who should go in what event by sections. “We’ll know where the old-er kids will go, but we’ll have to spread out the younger ones to find their places,” Zamzo said.

But DL does have experi-ence back in some vital events, such as senior Nate Duchene on pole vault and possibly the 400 dash, with sophomore Steven Labine anchoring the hurdle events. Sophomore Nick Griffith returns as DL’s high jumper, along with fellow sophomore Ryan Kalberer, who will be competing in jumps. In sprints, juniors Erik Larson and Josh Eggebraaten will help add depth, while the latter will also do hurdles and the former the pole vault. Juniors Bryce Dutton and AJ Johnson return in the throwing events. The Lakers also have some motivation as a team after winning the Mid-State Confer-

ence meet last year. “That’s our goal, to defend the conference title,” Zamzo said. “We also would like to do well in the (section) True Team meet.” Unfortunately, the Lak-ers will be road warriors all season, with no home meets scheduled, since the track at Mollberg Field is undergoing a complete renovation. “It’s due to safety issues with our track (which will start undergoing repairs in June), so we are looking for-ward to a new track next year,” Zamzo added.

The 2010 deTroiT lakes boys’ Track Team includes (L to R) Row 1: Austin Clem, Hunter DuChene, Kirby Inderrieden, Cody Okeson, Conner Collins, Luke Eggebraaten, Alex Web-ber, Andy Harris, Riley Olson, Josh Mickelson, Stephen Sinclair, Logan Twigg. Row 2: Brandon Olson, Luke Wiebolt, Tre Martinez, Charlie Wichmann, Briton Thompson, Josh Eggebraaten, Nolan Singer, Christian Tigges, Tim McKagan, Andrew Averbeck, Jordan Kimball. Row 3: David Perez, Nick Griffith, Andrew Johnson, Nathan DuChene, Travis Sims, Cody Johnson, Steven Labine, Nate Kitzmann, John Palubicki, Levi Fairbanks, Louis Singer. Row 4: Joe Hager, Ryan Kalberer, Jack Hoganson, Scott Ullyott, Wesley Bakken, Jason Stallman, Clem Foltz, Ethen VanOffelen, Montana Johnson, Sam Charmoa. Row 5: Gunnar Michon, Mike Okeson, Patrick Bakken, Leif Johnson, Jordan Thielen, Dalton VanRuden, Jared Olson.

Experienced golfers line Lp-A’s golf lineup

Raider girls’ golf looking for better things in 2010

BY BRIAN [email protected]

The ride for the Lake Park-Audubon boys’ golf team should be much smoother than the 2009 one, as the Raid-ers return good talent, along with some seasoning. Lucas Hoehenan is back after finishing at a top 20 in the Heart O’Lakes Conference last year and should be able to move up in the rankings. Eighth grader Isaiah Pear-son has shown a good work ethic in the offseason to im-prove his game, making him a solid No. 2 golfer in the Raider lineup this season, as well. “We’ll have four other golf-ers rotating in and out of the top six,” said LP-A head boys’ golf coach Nicole Seyfried. “We’re looking to have a better ranking in the conference.” The Raiders also will have Bo Svodbodny, Eric Zacharia-son and Elijah Bodine in the mix as LP-A’s top six golfers. The goal this year is to

eliminate mistakes and stay out of trouble leading to high-scoring holes. “This year, coaches can coach during the meet, so that will be big,” Seyfried said. “In previous seasons, the guys would get into lots of trouble on holes, so I’ll be out there helping them make better de-cisions out there.” Seyfried is hoping for a middle of the pack finish in the conference, so consistency will be a key factor this year. The Raiders will host an HOL meet May 3, at the Forest Hills Golf Course.

BY BRIAN [email protected]

The Lake Park-Audubon girls’ golf team has its full ros-ter back from the 2009 squad, which sent three golfers to the section meet. But the only returning sec-tion golfer will be junior Au-tumn Ricke, who will lead a seasoned team in the 2010 sea-son. Depth is good, as a slate is back after seeing varsity time on the links in 2009. “We have our full varsity team back,” said LP-A head girls’ golf coach Marge Beud-ine. “Our goal is to hit in the middle of the Heart O’Lakes Conference, so consistency will be key.” Returning with varsity experience includes Jessica Halverson, Maria Veit, Jes-sica Larson, Ricke and Cindy Schiffler.

There will be some good competition to fill the six var-sity slots in practice. Another advantage this season will be the fact that Beudine can coach the players during a meet. “We’ll be busy as coaches now, but it’s good to be able to help the players out dur-ing meets now,” Beudine said. “We’ll be able to answer some questions and be like a PGA caddy for them.” The Raiders will host an HOL meet May 3, at their home course of Forest Hills Golf Course.

Raider baseball team to be senior-laden

New beginnings to be had for Lp-A softball squad

BY BRIAN [email protected]

With some good experi-ence and talent coming back for the 2010 season, the Lake Park-Audubon baseball team is confidently looking to sur-pass their four-win mark from a season ago. The Raiders will be strong in some vitals areas, includ-ing pitching, catching and just the overall defense. The potential improvement will be led by first-year head coach Brandon Olson, who is a 2000 Detroit Lakes graduate. “Our defense should be a strong point this season,” Olson said. “As a group, they are here to win and be competitive.” The Raiders will be senior-laden, with 11 upperclassmen out — and most of them have been playing varsity since LP-A picked baseball up again over five years ago. Jesse Wixo will be one of the most experienced players back and will run the pitching staff from the catching position. He will have some seasoned hurlers to catch, with senior Tyler Mickelson being LP-A’s

ace, followed by senior Chad Dehler. Senior Caleb Lunde will anchor the bullpen, while se-niors Jake Lunde and Dan Binde will provide solid depth on the mound. “Most of these guys are third-year varsity players, too,” Olson added. Defensively, the Raiders will be seasoned. Caleb Lunde returns at shortstop and has the ability to twist the double plays, while Binde will hold down the sec-ond base position, along with sophomore Wyatt Wixo. Dehler will man the hot corner at third, making the in-field as solid as it has been in LP-A yet. The outfield will also be ath-letic and quick, with Jake Lunde anchoring it in centerfield, with Wyatt Wixo taking either right or left field positions. “We’ll still need a few games to see where everything plays out,” Olson added. “But these guys have expectations to be above the .500 mark this year.” The Raiders also will be playing in the Pine to Prairie Conference for the first time.

The 2010 season will be a fresh new start for the Lake Park-Audubon softball team. The Raiders will be start-ing in a new conference — the Pine to Prairie — along with a new head coach and a slew of new players. But LP-A will still look to put out a competitive team under new head coach Bobbi Blickenstaff. “We do not have many play-ers with years of experience, but I do have players will-ing to learn and work hard,” Blickenstaff said. “I have girls who want to play and who want to learn. Getting to know the team has been very posi-tive; the girls have incredible work-ethic attitudes.” The most seasoned player for the Raiders happens to be a pitcher in senior Christine McIntire. “Christine has the most experience, so I am looking forward to her leadership,” Blickenstaff said. McIntire will lead a deep pitching staff, which also in-cludes senior Carissa Adams, freshman Maegan Anderson

and seventh grader Cheyanne Nelson. “Carissa has a different pitching style than Christine, which will help,” the LP-A coach said. “Maegan Ander-son is in ninth grade and I am looking forward to her future leadership.” Junior Chelsey Raaen re-turns as the Raider’s catcher, who also brings plenty of ex-perience. Blickenstaff also will have to see how the team’s offense will respond to varsity pitch-ing, since many haven’t hit on that level yet. “We’ll have to wait and see until we play some games,” Blickenstaff added about her offensive lineup. The Raiders will play a Pine to Prairie Conference sched-ule, which includes games against Norman County East, Bagley, Fertile-Beltrami, Nor-man County East and Foss-ton. Blickenstaff’s assistant coaches this season are Bob Soukup and Tiffany Nagel.

Numbers short, but motivation high for Lp-A girlsBY BRIAN WIERIMA

[email protected]

Although numbers will be short for the Lake Park-Audubon boys’ and girls’ track and field teams, the Raiders will still be strong in several events for the 2010 season. The Raider boys will be strong in the sprints and field events, while the girls will compete well in the dis-tance. The boys’ team has several ath-letes who also play baseball, but will be able to compete in six meets which does not conflict with the diamond schedule. Seniors Jesse Wixo and Joe Ander-son each are key components on the baseball team, but will also anchor the Raider track squad. Wixo qualified for sections last year in the triple and long jumps, while Anderson will anchor the dis-cus and shot put throws. Sophomore Wyatt Wixo, who also is a baseball player, will be a contend-er in sprints and throws, while sopho-more Greg Olson will fill the third slot in discus and shot put. Sophomore Chase Zeller will also throw the discus and compete in the high jump. The Raider girls will be strong in the 4x800 relay, with a bevy of return-ing distance runners. The 4x800 will consist of juniors Ashley Thompson, Caitlyn Wavra, along with eighth grader Rebecca Schermer and senior Nora Ulmer. “They will be strong after making the section last year,” said LP-A track coach Lori Wixo. Schermer will also fill the 800 event, while eighth grader Ashlyn Strom and senior Nicole Warling will run the 3,200 and 1,600-meter events. Sophomore Rachel Carlson had a strong season in the sprints in 2009 and will compete in each of the 100, 200 and 400 races, along with fresh-man Brittany Rislund. Senior Kjerstin Swenson will be back in the triple jump, as well. There are 20 Raider girls out, which includes a dozen seventh and eighth graders.
