A NEW CONCEPT OF AGRICULTURE
A NEW CONCEPT OF AGRICULTURE IS EMERGING. IN THIS NEW CONCEPT AGRICULTUREIS DEFINED TO INCLUDE THREE IMPORTANT SEGMENTS OF OUR ECONOMY.
THE FIRST SEGMENT INCLUDES THE FARMERS THEMSELVES WHO ARE ENGAGED IN THEPRODUCTION OF CROPS AND LIVESTOCK.
THE SECOND SEGMENT INCLUDES THOSE INDUSTRIES WHICH FURNISH SUPPLIES ANDSERVICE TO AGRICULTURE.
THE THIRD SEGMENT INCLUDES THOSE INDUSTRIES WHICH PROCESS, STORE, HANDLEAND MERCHANDISE THE PRODUCTS OF AGRICULTURE.
TAKEN TOGETHER, THESE THREE GROUPS EMPLOY APPRoxIMATELY 37 PERCENT OF THETOTAL EMPLOYED PEOPLE IN THE UNITED STATES.
As wE LOOK AT MODERN AGRICULTURE AND REvIEw THE MANY CHANGES wHICH ARETAKING PLACE IN REGARD TO SIZE OF BUSINESS, LABOR EMPLOYED, CAPITAL USED,TECHNOLOGY AND MANAGEMENT INFORMATION USED, IT BECOMES INCREASINGLY CLEARTHAT HE MUST DO A BETTER JOB OF TRAINING YOUNG MEN TO wORK IN A NEw,MODERN, DYNAMIC AGRICULTURE. To PROVIDE THIS SUPERIOR TRAINING, THESCHOOL OF AGRICULTURE AT NORTH CAROLINA STATE COLLEGE HAS REORGANIZED ITSUNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS OF INSTRUCTION IN AGRICULTURE. THE SCHOOL NOWOFFERS THREE CURRICULA: AGRICULTURAL SCIENCE; AGRICULTURAL BUSINESS; ANDAGRICULTURAL TECHNOLOGY.
THE CURRICULUM IN AGRICULTURAL SCIENCE PLACES MUCH GREATER EMPHASIS UPONSCIENCE AND ITS APPLICATION TO AGRICULTURE. IT PROVIDES EXCELLENT TRAIN-ING FOR EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES INCLUDING RESEARCH FOR PUBLIC INSTITUTIONSAND INDUSTRT. IT WAS DEVELOPED TO HELP MEET THE SHORTAGE OF WELL-TRAINEDSCIENTISTS.
AGRICULTURAL BUSINESS TRAINS YOUNG MEN IN BUSINESS AND AGRICULTURE. THISPROGRAM BRINGS INTO EXISTENCE A NEW COMBINATION OF BUSINESS, SCIENCE, ANDTECHNICAL AGRICULTURE. MEN IN THIS CURRICULUM ARE TRAINED TO WORK INAGRICULTURAL INDUSTRIES CLOSELY RELATED TO FARMING. THERE IS A GREATDEMAND FOR MEN WITH THIS UNIQUE COMBINATION OF TRAINING IN SCIENCE,BUSINESS AND TECHNICAL AGRICULTURE.
AGRICULTURAL TECHNOLOGY EMPHASIZES APPLIED SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY. INTHIS CURRICULUM MEN ARE TRAINED IN AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION AND IN THETECHNICAL PROCESSES INVOLVED IN AGRICULTURAL INDUSTRY. THERE IS A SHORT-AGE OF WELL-TRAINED TECHNOLOGISTS.

Students in the Agricultural Business Curriculum are to choose certain oftheir courses from very restricted lists, in order that fundamentalgrounding in each area be assured.
