Eaton Bank School 1 Spring Online 2012 ENGLISH NEWS SEEING IS BELIEVING Year 11 students had the chance to see one of their set books on the stage at the Lowry’s production of ‘An Inspector Calls’. Students from the school enjoyed seeing the ‘characters come to life’ and were able to compare the actors’ portrayal with their own ideas. ‘The Inspector was a lot more assertive’ commented one Year 11 boy; “Hearing the words spoken, and seeing the expressions of the actors helps you to understand what the character means” added another. Head of English, Shelley Boswell explained “It was just too good an opportunity to miss, not only will it help the students prepare for their literature exam, but it is a great play and we want to give our students the opportunity to enjoy all aspects of English Literature.” LRC NEWS A VISIT FROM CURTIS JOBLING! The creative designer of Bob the Builder had students wowed as he took them through the journey from initial illustration to finished book. A relatively new author of the Wereworld books, Curtis captured the imagination of the students with some quick fire sketches of Wendy, Bob, Spud and Pilchard, characters from the children’s series for which he was creative designer. The Wereworld books follow the story of Drew, a young shepherd boy, who on his 16th birthday discovers he is actually a werewolf and rightful heir to Wereworld. As he read extracts from his novels, which have been nominated for several awards, the students were captivated. “Amazing” commented Charlie, a Y8 student; whilst Patrick (also Y8) added “I really enjoyed meeting Curtis, he was an excellent drawer and writer”. Curtis finished his visit to Eaton Bank by speaking to Y10 about working in the media, how it is a hard profession and that you have to start at the bottom, making the tea! However, he also told them that if they wanted to follow this career then they needed to ‘put themselves out there’ and never get complacent. And with Curtis having done just that himself, the students could certainly see that all the hard work can be worth it. GUILTY OR NOT GUILTY? Could you be a lawyer for a day? Or stand up in front of Magistrates and give important evidence? A group of students from Eaton Bank school took up that challenge and became lawyers, witnesses and many more court characters in a Mock Trial Competition held at Mold Magistrates Court in Wrexham. We practised the trial after school so we were ready for the day. We acted it out like it was a real court room. Laura Gallagher, Hannah Roberts, Emily Green, Charli Cronin, Jonah Wilkinson, Imogen Cook, Patrick Heath, Angel Alexander, Elli Williams, Jake Adlington, Evie Foster, Anna Withington and Alice Bailey were the students who took part in the court trials; learning about the roles of the court and the people within. This was delivered in a real court. On Saturday 3rd March, early in the morning the team along with their supporters arrived at Mold Court to challenge 4 opposing schools in the case Crown vs George Low, a teenage lad who was accused of handling stolen goods. Each school had to defend and prosecute the opposition. Once that was completed the magistrates sat and discussed the case with a real magistrate to find out if they were found guilty or not. In our first round our defence team battled against the prosecution team from the other school and our team found the defendant ‘not guilty’ therefore we won our first round. In our second round we also won, our prosecution team found the defendant ‘guilty’. So we thought we would win, but unfortunately the opposition won because of additional point scores. But all in all a really good day was enjoyed by all and we would all love to experience this opportunity again. SCIENCE NEWS BIOLOGY OLYMPIAD CHALLENGE Two of our Year 13 Biologists, Hannah Rhodes- Patterson and George Bracegirdle, were successful in the British Biology Olympiad challenge which aims to stimulate gifted students with an interest in Biology to expand and extend their talents. Hannah achieved a Bronze Award and George achieved a Distinction, both students very narrowly missing the higher awards. Almost 4000 students took part in this year's competition

The BBO challenges, by both theory and practical tests, some of the top pre-university biology students in the world, with 60 countries taking part.

Gifted students are able to demonstrate their knowledge and to be suitably rewarded and publicly recognised by the award of medals, certificates and other prizes.

MICROBES As part of the Fit For Sport Topic in Y8, we looked at disease and our defences against it. We started off making models of bacteria from balloons and continued by writing poems on the topic:

There are billions of microbes all around, In the air, in the sky and on the ground, They cause diseases and illnesses to name a few But most of the time, they won’t harm you They come in shapes so small to see, The tiniest thing in the galaxy, Impetigo and Salmonella are two of their names, They’re out to get you – that is their aim But they aren’t all bad some are here to help you There are billions of microbes all around. By Will Allen Microbes and bacteria are really small Without a microscope you can’t see them at all There are many types of bacteria Some cause diseases, like Diptheria! They are everywhere in sight The sheer amount can give you a fright Some of them are harmful, really, So if you’re not careful it could cost you dearly. By Connor Jepson SCIENCE WEEK SPELLS FUN Year 7 students at Eaton Bank have been celebrating Science Week with a lesson exploring the fun side of solids, liquids and gases. Students made and tested hydrogen – the ‘squeaky pop’ gas, before trying out film canister rockets powered by carbon dioxide. The finale – for which the students had to venture outside of the laboratory, was the coke and mentos fountain. And everyone had their own favourite activity – ‘The best bit’ according to George Wilson was ‘when we made the little rockets because it was very exciting waiting for them to explode’. Joe Thorndon thought ‘The best bit was when the coke shot out of the bottle because of the mentos. It went soooo high!” Izzy Harbisher agreed “The best bit was the coke because everyone enjoyed themselves and it was great.” Other Key Stage 3 students can enter a Science Week quiz, where as well as answering a set of science based questions, students have to come up with one of their own.

Michael was Patrick’s sister’s fiancé who passed away on 14th March 2010, at the age of 23, following a three year battle with illness. Patrick remembers Michael as “an amazing, clever and funny person. He played the drums and guitar and taught me my first piece on the guitar”. Patrick wanted to organise the fundraiser to help reach a goal of £15,000 to enable Michael to be awarded a golden leaf on the tree of remembrance at The Christie Hospital. The money will be used to buy new equipment and drugs in the Young Oncology Unit that will make cancer treatment more bearable and hopefully successful in 16-25 year olds. Staff and students at school have shown tremendous support for the event, raising a fantastic total of £885 which has helped Patrick reach his goal of £15,000 on the Tree of Hope. Eaton Bank runs regular fund raising events inspired by the students and is always keen to support charities selected by the students with personal meaning to them and their community. MOTIVATIONAL PLACEMENT AT BIDDULPH GRANGE Chris Slater in Year 10 currently attends a two day motivational placement at Biddulph Grange. Chris works along side the Gardening Team and is supported by Duncan Hayles. He completes tasks such as planting, leaf blowing, restoration and general maintenance of the National Trust gardens. Chris has completed this placement for 12 months. To celebrate this achievement Duncan and the team organised a presentation for Chris. The celebration was held at Biddulph Grange and those who attended included; family, representatives from Eaton Bank school and the Biddulph Grange team. Chris was presented with a National Trust T-shirt, National Trust bag and a pair of his own garden clippers. Paul Walton who heads the gardening team thanked Chris for all his hard work over the last 12 months. He and the rest of the team class Chris as a valued member of the team and a friend. Chris has been a great ambassador for Eaton Bank at Biddulph Grange and has become a real asset to the gardening team there.

SCHOOLS UNITE TO PROMOTE APPRENTICESHIP OPPORTUNITIES Representatives from Bentley Motors, Plus Dane Housing, Cheshire East Council and both Congleton Secondary Schools came together at Eaton Bank last week to promote National Apprenticeship Week. The event, which was organised by Councillor George Hayes, an ex student of and now a Governor at Eaton Bank, highlighted the very real opportunities that apprenticeship schemes offer to young people in Congleton and the surrounding area.

Students in Years 11 and 13 heard presentations on Bentley, Plus Dane and Cheshire East Council Apprenticeship Schemes as well as an overview of how to use the National Apprenticeship Service website to successfully apply for the right positions. This last presentation was delivered by Eaton Bank School’s Strategic Business Manager, Elizabeth Whitehurst, who stepped in at the last minute when the National Apprenticeship Service representative was prevented from attending due to bad weather. Also presenting at the event were Head Teachers, Ann Webb and David Hermitt, and the Town Mayor, Councillor Douglas Parker, who spoke from experience, having himself undertaken an apprenticeship in his early career. Ann Webb, Head Teacher at Eaton Bank, said “This event was far more than a showcase for apprenticeships. It has actually created real opportunities for the young people in our schools to access employment with some of the area’s biggest and most progressive employers.” To find out more about apprenticeships visit the National Apprenticeship Service website at www.apprenticeships.org.uk. MFL NEWS TAPAS On Tuesday 7th February Year 8 students enjoyed a delicious culmination to their ‘¿Qué comes?’ unit of work, when they tried a range of Spanish Tapas including chorizo (spicy sausage), patatas bravas (potatoes), Spanish omelette, salsa and pollo picante (spicy chicken). Pupils have been researching the topic of “Tapas” during their computer lessons and have prepared presentations which they have shown to the rest of the group. The whole experience was a great way to show off the pupils’ new language skills and to enjoy a real life Spanish experience! Here are some of their comments; Daniel Bowyer Year 8 “I enjoyed tapas because there were lots of different flavours and lots to try. It was amazing! If I had to pick a restaurant in the future it would be a Spanish one and I would have lots of Spanish omelette.” David Eaton Year 8 “I think tapas was amazingly awesome with all the flavours. We tried Spanish omelette, Doritos with lime, Mexican dip and some chorizo. My favourite was the Spanish garlic chicken. It was good to try some new foods.”

Jordan Ikin Year 8 “I think it was good to try the tapas, so we could try new flavours and spices. We had Spanish omelette and also tried chorizo which is a sort of salami, patatas bravas which is a sort of garlicky potato. It was good to try something new.” Grace Cunliffe Year 8 “I enjoyed the tapas food. I tried the tortillas, chorizo, patatas bravas and salsa. The thing I enjoyed the most was the spicy sausage.”

BARCELONA 2012

19 students are off to Barcelona on the 29th March to explore the city. They will be visiting the Nou Camp, the Ramblas and lots more! Students will be eating typical Spanish food, soaking up the Spanish culture and staying in a hotel close to Europe’s longest beach. ¡Buen Viaje! CHINESE CLUB AND NEW YEAR EXTRAVAGANZA 2012! Once again the Eaton Bank Chinese Club has enjoyed a successful half term, with another group of Mandarin students, comprising pupils, staff and governors, now able to participate in simple conversations, introducing themselves and discussing personal details, such as age, birthdays and where they live. Each session has started with a short session of Chi Gung, a form of Thai Chi, which has helped to focus the mind. Alongside the Mandarin language, students have also engaged in practical activities such as Chinese calligraphy using ink actually brought back from China by a former pupil. Fun computer websites which include songs and games, allowed the students to practice their newly acquired language. The final

Page 6: Spring Online Magazine 2012

Eaton Bank School Spring Online 2012 6

session was possibly the most popular one in which we took over the Food Technology room and made delicious spring rolls and prawn toast, and then tried to eat them using chopsticks, learning some more Mandarin mealtime phrases at the same time. The other highlight of the course was the trip to Stockport Plaza to see performers from Chengdu in the Chinese New Year Extravaganza show on Saturday 4th February. 17 of us witnessed both traditional and contemporary Chinese acts including amazing acrobats, gymnasts, dancers, pandas and dragons!

Although Chinese Club is run by Mrs Smith, full credit must be given to our resident specialist in the Sixth Form, Liam Ives-Keeler, who attended the first Chinese Club 4 years ago, and has continued to teach himself at home too. Liam gave up his time to plan and deliver the sessions as part of his Curriculum Enrichment. He is hoping to study Mandarin Chinese and French at university and we wish him much success. LOOKING FORWARD TO THE SOUTH OF FRANCE TRIP! Following the success of 3 previous exchange visits to the south of France we have unfortunately had to accept that the French families are unable to host us this year. As an alternative in June we are taking a small group of Year 9 and 10 students to stay in the boarding facilities of our exchange school, the Centre International de Valbonne, an International school with 2400 students from sixty different countries. Our students will not be matched with French partners, but we will have the chance to spend some time in the school experiencing French school life.

It will be a fantastic opportunity for our students to spend time in a beautiful part of France putting all their acquired vocabulary and structures to the test. During their stay the students will take part in a full programme of events which may include: a visit to a perfume factory in Grasse; a trip to Monaco viewing the famous Casino and the route of the Formula 1 race; a visit to the French school; a visit to the scenic resorts of Antibes and Cannes and a boat trip to a nearby island; exploring the old town in Nice, including the Flower Market. Pupils will also have language based activities to complete during their stay in order to consolidate what they have learnt. MFL KARNEVAL – MARDI GRAS MASK COMPETITION The MFL department received a large number of excellent entries for the Mask competition, which made choosing winners a difficult decision. Mr Carvell YEAR 7 RUGBY Eaton Bank’s Year 7 Rugby team achieved runner up position in the Cheshire Tournament, held at Winnington Park Rugby Club on Thursday 23rd February. The team, who had received expert coaching from rugby coach Julian Guilding and Stuart Hobson, prior to the event, were managed on the day by Sixth Form students, Andy and Dan Hobson and Fred Joyce. They won all of their first round games to finish at the top of their group and progress to the finals against the other group winners. Not only did Y7 finish as runners up, it was great to have the older students managing the team; having played rugby themselves they totally understood how the boys felt and they were able to offer support and encouragement, as well as guidance on the day. They were a credit to the school.

BOYS’ FOOTBALL – MACCLESFIELD SCHOOLS CUP Last year’s success, with 2 of our teams reaching the finals, and Year 11 winning the cup, has proved quite a challenge to emulate. Yr 7 quarter final: Eaton Bank 2 Fallibroome 3 In windy conditions the boys played some excellent football only to get beaten in the dying seconds of the match. Goalkeeper Martin Robertson pulled off some fantastic saves to keep the scores level at 2-2, but an unstoppable strike from one of the Fallibroome forwards gave them the advantage with just 3 seconds left on the clock. The two sides were evenly matched and on another day it might have been Eaton Bank progressing to the semi-finals. The boys have been training well over the last couple of months and there is great competition for places within the year group. Squad: Jack Lenton, Jake Lee-Lightfoot, James Moores, Jacob Arnold, Sam Jones, Maurice Bolton, Will Humfrey, Sam Hitchen, Sam Sherratt, Sam MacArthur, Ben Arkle, Thomas Eardley , Martin Robertson, Ethan Frost. Thanks to Mr Boon for the match report and giving his time to run training and manage the Year 7 team. Year 8 quarter final: Eaton Bank 2 Wilmslow 5 Year 8 have probably had the 2 most challenging fixtures of any team this year. Earlier in the year they met an outstanding Brine Leas team in the Cheshire Cup. After telling the boys they wouldn’t face too many school teams as good as that, Wilmslow turned out to be very high quality opposition. For a large part, the game remained close and at 2-1 down the game remained very competitive. In the end, Wilmslow were the better team, and deserved their victory. Most impressive

Page 9: Spring Online Magazine 2012

Eaton Bank School Spring Online 2012 9

was the character displayed by the boys. Many teams will crumble when losing 5-1, but instead of conceding more goals, the team kept working hard and clawed back a second goal. So although the game was lost, pride certainly wasn’t. Squad: Jerry Hayes, Sam Whitehurst, Dan Johnson, Taylor Ford Martin, Sam Minshull, Ross Woodcock (C), Liam Bowden, Jordan Gregory, Charlie Heppell, Arron Abdi Tehrani, Jacob Kitten, Harry Smith, Cam Latham, Luke Harbage, Kieran Tatton. Year 9 quarter final: Eaton Bank 2 Tytherington 4 Like Year 7, this was a very close game, and on another day would have had a different result. Year 9 have suffered this year with injuries to key players. 5 of the team that played in the cup final last year were missing for a variety of reasons and this had an impact. The boys that did play were excellent and on the day at least deserved a draw. In the game we conceded a very early penalty which gave the visitors a lead against the run of play. Eaton Bank responded positively with 2 goals to take the lead. For the rest of the first half Eaton Bank dominated and missed several very good chances. Then Tytherington equalized to make the score 2-2 at half time. The second half was very even, and at 2-2 with 7 minutes to go, appeared to be heading for penalties. It is still a mystery how we lost this game 4-2, 2 late goals for Tytherington, punishing our earlier missed chances. There’s always next year. Squad: Harry Podmore, Ethan Gater, Jacob lea, Josh Kirby (C), Joel Harpur, Mike Spratt, Max Yates, Charlie Yates, Mike Abson-Barnes, Sam Wilson, Ryan Jones, Cameron Wright, Billy Barlow. Year 10 quarter final: Fallibroome 5 Eaton Bank 1 Unlike the Year 8 game, this was much closer than the scoreline suggested. Like Year 9, Year 10 have struggled to get their best 11 together on the pitch this year. This was probably the best Year 10 team and performance so far. Eaton Bank had the better of the first 10 minutes before finding themselves a goal down. They quickly equalized then were the better team for the rest of the first half. As at any level of football, when you play well and create chances it is vital you take them. With virtually the last kick of the first half Fallibroome scored to lead 2-1 at half time. Credit to Fallibroome, they stepped their game up in the second half and were the best team, adding 3 more goals. It would be fair to say Fallibroome deserved their victory, but a 2-1 score line would have been a fairer reflection on a game that was actually very close.

Squad: Max Rogers, Elliot Bowyer, Tom Arkle, Will Percival, Andy Gray, Oli Long, Tom Leese (C), Scott Hudson, Zak Roberts, Roni Milner, Lewis Hartles, Harry Grant, Shaun Watson. Year 11 semi final: Eaton Bank v Tytherington: To be played on Monday 19th March…… Year 12 & 13 quarter final: Eaton Bank 0 Tytherington 2 On an extremely windy Wednesday afternoon it was Tytherington who got the better of the Eaton Bank Sixth Form team. The game was a very scrappy one, with both teams struggling to string together any meaningful attacking moves. However the breakthrough came at around the 35th minute, when a long ball was latched onto by the on-rushing Tytherington forward and dispatched nicely. Eaton Bank came out better in the second half, hustling and harrying for every ball and came close on a number of occasions with Richie Hall and Danny Adams combining well in the centre of midfield. However as time ticked away, the relentless pressure from Eaton Bank to look for that equaliser was countered upon and left the Tytherington forward with little to do with holes starting to appear at the back, that made it 2-0. Eaton Bank kept pressing and came close on a few occasions, with Ryan Leake coming closest and Ben Etridge squandering a brilliant chance deep inside the 18 yard box after a good run. Man of the Match – Ben Ambage. Squad: Danny Adams (C), Richie Hall, Connor Tacagni, Chris Greening, Todd Downing, Ben Ambage, Alex Garber, Ben Etridge, Jordan Morris, Ryan Leake, Josh Adams, Josh Pritchard, Liam Kiely. Thanks to Danny Adams for the match report. Mr Margolan BOYS’ SPORTS PRACTICES We are trying to run as much afterschool sport as possible, on different evenings. This term the boys have been able to stay on Monday for rugby (all Years), badminton (Year 7) and table tennis (all Years). On Tuesday there has been basketball, and on Wednesday, football and trampolining (all Years). There has also been interhouse dodgeball (different Year group each week) and badminton (Year 8 and above). These clubs run up to Easter, and then will be replaced with athletics, cricket and tennis. Students should check the daily bulletin for details, or the school website. Getting involved in after school sport is a good way to get fitter, make new friends, and gain your silver or gold BEST PE awards. It’s hopefully enjoyable too!

SCHOOLS BIATHLON On Sunday 29th January I went along to the GB Schools Biathlon event at Macclesfield Leisure Centre. Each of our athletes had to complete a run and a swim with Year 7 completing a 50 metre swim and 500m run and Years 8, 9, 10, and 11 completing a 100m swim and 100m run. The weather conditions outside were very cold but our competitors from Eaton Bank did exceptionally well. Rosie Pearce and Elisha Proudmore-Callear ran in the Year 8 girls’ event completing good times for their event. In the boys’ competitions, Ben Arkle finished in 6th place, Dom Stafford finished in 4th place, Tom Arkle finished in 5th place and Tom Guillon in Year 11 finished in 2nd place, narrowly missing 1st by only 12 points. Tom Guillon also gained a medal for best swim in his age group. As a result of finishing in the top 6 the boys have now been selected to take part in the British Biathlon Championships to be held at Crystal Palace in March. This is a fantastic achievement for our school and the local community as our swimmers are coached at Satellites and Dane Valley Swimming Clubs. Well done to all involved and good luck to the boys in their National Championships on the 24th March!

Ben Arkle, (Yr 7) ENGLISH SCHOOLS’ SWIMMING ASSOCIATION North West Division Championships On Saturday 10th March I went along to the Europa Pool in Birkenhead for the annual ESSA Gala for the North West Division. Four pupils from Eaton Bank attended, this included Will Humfrey and Ben Arkle from Year 7, Tom Arkle from Year 10 and Tom Guillon from Year 11. The boys did some fantastic swims amongst a very difficult field. Will Humfrey narrowly missed a personal

Page 11: Spring Online Magazine 2012

best time by less than half a second in the 200m Individual Medley and did a good swim on the 100m breaststroke. Ben Arkle gained two personal best times, knocking over a second off his 200m Individual Medley time and a further second off his 100m breaststroke time despite completing 1500m in a gala the night before. Tom Arkle was less than a second off his personal best times in the 200m Individual Medley and 100m breaststroke. Tom Guillon gained a personal best in the 100m butterfly and was only three one hundredths of a second outside his best on the 100m freestyle. The boys will now have to wait for the results of the second competition in order to see if they have gained a place in the North West Team. Well done boys!
