THE CLASSES

ADVANCED TOPICS IN CELESTIAL NAVIGATION The utility, speed, accuracy and versatility of celestial navigation can all increase significantly when taken beyond the elementary level. Topics will include: specialized shortcuts for finding latitude and longitude, great circle calculations and methods of checking sextant and compass by a tronomical observations. Students will develop personal work forms and calculator programs to streamline their own preferred sight reduction techniques. The method of lunar distance (longitude without a chronometer) will be covered if time permits. Prerequisite: Familiarity with the altitude-intercept method of sight reduction. Materials: Programmable, scientific calculator. Text: Self-conlained Celestial Navigation by J. Letcher. 7:00 p.m. Wednesdays Fee: $90 April 8 - May 27 Instructor: Paul Kamen

BASIC MARINE ELECTRICITY FOR BOATS A course designed to teach basic electrical toubleshooting, selection and installation of

equipments and instruments , corro ion and electrolysis control , and the use of alternative energy resources for regenerative charging of boat electrical systems. Discussions of solar and wind powered electrical systems as well as the use of electric auxiliary engines for sailboats. 7:00 p.m. Mondays Fee: $80 April 6 - June I Instructor: Gino Giarusso

CELESTIAL NAVIGATION The altitude-intercept method of sight reduction is taught using H.O.229. Spherical geometry is simply described and the steps to calculating lines of position are explained while reductions for stars , moon , sun and planets are presented within a framework of ordinary arithmetic. Ease and simplicity are stressed in the use of modem tables and instruments. Text: Nautical Almanac, H.C.P.#229 vol. 3, Dutton (optional). Lab materials: Drawing compass , parallel rules , starfinder #210 I D, chart # 18680, Universal plotting sheets. 7:00 p.m. Wednesdays Fee: $80 April 8 - May 27 Instructor: Frank Potter

COAST GUARD OPERATOR'S LICENSE REVIEW A course designed to aid students in preparation for license examination to operate or navigate passenger carrying vessels. General requirements such as sea-time and documentation are explained and rules of the road, navigation and piloting, safety, first aid , engineering and vessel operation are reviewed. Emphasis is on the Inland Motorboat Operator License (6 or less passengers) , but this course is invaluable to students withing to sit for higher grades of operator. Text: CG-169 (Rules of the Road) and Chapman. 7:00 p.m. Thursdays Fee: $90 April 9 - May 14 Instructor: Scott Epler

DIESEL MECHANICS A course to provide students with basic instruction in the fundamentals of repair and maintenance of engines on small craft, including tune-up, testing, assembly, disassembly, emergency repairs , troubleshooting and small parts inventory. 7:00 p.m. Thursdays Fee: $80 April 9 - May 28 Instructor: Craig Wooster

FmERGLASS REPAIRS AND CONSTRUCTION Fundamentals of reinforced plastics as applied to boat construction are taught to develop the student's confidence for proper inspection and evaluation of fiberglass boats. Fabrication and testing methods are taught with particular emphasis on marine structure and the recognition of faulty construction and critical areas. Lab materials: gloves , particle masks and equipment supplied . 7:00 p.m. Tuesdays Fee: $80 April 7 - May 26 Instructor: TBA

FUNDAMENTALS OF BOATBUILDING Beginning with discussion of construction theory, which provides an understanding of structure, the class then explores the different methods of building with an eye to the advantages and disadvantages of each from a builder's point of view. Modem techniques of wood and fiberglass construction are examined in detail. The first two meetings are classroom discussions of basic tools and principles. The other meetings will consist of a brief review followed by actual boatbuilding in the shop. The students learn to make molds, strongbacks and jigs , how to plank, spile, laminate wood and fiberglass and finish . After completing the class , each student should be able to build a boat of their own. Class size limited to eight students. 6:30-9:30 p.m. Mondays & Wednesdays Fee: $180 April 6 -June I Instructor: David Mancebo

PILOTING AND COASTAL NAVIGATION Piloting is the careful application of skill and knowledge to the determination of a vessel's position while in sight of land. Use of compass, chart reading, methods of obtaining position lines and fixes, navigation tools, rules of the road, tides and currents and small boat handling are discussed in detail as they apply to the San Francisco Bay. Text: Chapman. 7:00 p.m. Tuesdays Fee: $75 April 7 - May 26 Instructor: AI Conrad
