Spring Dances2022

Page 2: Spring Dances 2022 - Juilliard

This year, Juilliard Dance celebrates its 70th anniversary after the founding of the division by Martha Hill in 1951. Hill was a true visionary who set the standard of dance education by placing equal emphasis on ballet and modern dance forms. By doing so, she engendered the model for what I call the “hybrid” dancer, who embodies various styles and movement ideas while contributing to the work through scholastic research and discussion. Following the legacy of Hill leading the field, tonight’s performance not only demonstrates the versatility of our BFA program, but also celebrates female-identifying, groundbreaking choreographers and composers.

Trisha Brown’s Set and Reset/Reset is a contemporary response to her iconic 1983 work. The dancers were tasked to learn Brown’s original phrases, then reset the structure of the work, making it unique to Juilliard Dance in 2022. Shelter (1988), by Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, challenges the dancers to work as a collective to share stories of displacement and faith in oneself to push forward. And Aszure Barton’s return to patience (2015), to music by another trailblazing artist, Juilliard Creative Associate Caroline Shaw, reminds us to savor the rich beauty that lies in simplicity.

At Juilliard Dance, we strive to reach a deeper understanding of the genius of these choreographers by exploring their work and movement philosophies. Thank you, Trisha Brown Dance Company, Jawole Willa Jo Zollar and Urban Bush Women, and Aszure Barton for taking such care of the education of our dancers, and for trusting us with your greatest treasures.

Please accompany me in supporting the dancers as they join the privileged few who have performed these works.

Enjoy the performance,

Alicia Graf MackDean and Director, Juilliard Dance

About the Choreographers

Trisha Brown

One of the most influential choreographers and dancers of her time, Trisha Brown (1936-2017) forever changed the landscape of art with her groundbreaking work. With the founding of the Trisha Brown Dance Company in 1970, Brown set off on her own distinctive path of artistic investigation and ceaseless experimentation. The creator of more than 100 choreographies and a half-dozen operas as well as a graphic artist whose drawings have been in numerous museum exhibitions and collections, Brown took impetus for her earliest works from the cityscape of downtown SoHo, where she was a pioneering settler. In the 1970s, as Brown strove to invent an original abstract movement language—one of her singular achievements—it was art galleries, museums, and international exhibitions that provided her work its most important presentation context. A major turning point in Brown’s career occurred in 1979, when she transitioned from working in nontraditional and art world settings to assume the role of a choreographer working within the institutional framework associated with dancing—the proscenium stage. Brown was the recipient of nearly every award for contemporary choreographers. The first woman to receive the coveted MacArthur “genius” grant (in 1991), Brown was honored by five fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts; two John Simon Guggenheim fellowships; and Brandeis University’s creative arts medal in dance (1982). In 1988, she was named Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et Lettres by the government of France. In 1999, she received the New York State Governor’s Arts Award and, in 2003, was honored with the National Medal of Arts. She received numerous honorary doctorates, was an honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and was awarded the 2011 New York Dance and Performance ‘Bessie’ Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2011, Brown received the Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize for making an “outstanding contribution to the beauty of the world and to mankind’s enjoyment and understanding of life.”

Jawole Willa Jo Zollar

Growing up in Kansas City, Missouri, Jawole Willa Jo Zollar earned her BA in dance from the University of Missouri at Kansas City and her MFA in dance from Florida State University. In 1980, she moved to New York City to study with Dianne McIntyre at Sounds in Motion. In 1984, Zollar founded Urban Bush Women (UBW) as a performance ensemble dedicated to exploring the use of cultural expression as a catalyst for social change. She has created more than 34 works for UBW as well as Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and others. Her collaborators include Compagnie Jant-Bi from Senegal and Nora Chipaumire. Zollar’s company has toured five continents and in 2010 was selected as one of three U.S. dance companies to inaugurate a cultural diplomacy program for the U.S. Department of State. The founder of UBW Summer Leadership Institute and the founding artistic director and chief visioning partner of UBW, Zollar is also the Nancy Smith Fichter professor of dance and Robert O. Lawton distinguished professor at Florida State University. Zollar received a 2008 United States Artists Wynn fellowship, a 2009 fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, and a 2021 fellowship from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. Zollar received the Doris Duke Performing Artist Award and honorary degrees from Columbia College, Chicago; Tufts and Rutgers universities; and Muhlenberg College. She received the Dance Magazine Award in 2015, the Dance/USA Honor Award in 2016, and the 2017 Bessie Lifetime Achievement in Dance Award for her work in the field. She is a recipient of the 2021 Dance Teacher Award of Distinction and the 2021 Martha Hill Dance Fund Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2020, the Ford Foundation recognized UBW as one of America’s cultural treasures. Zollar was also a 2021 MacArthur Fellow.

Urban Bush Women

Urban Bush Women (UBW) burst onto the dance scene in 1984 with bold, demanding, and exciting works that brought undertold stories to life through the art and vision of its award-winning founder, Jawole Willa Jo Zollar. UBW weaves contemporary dance, music, and text with the history, culture, and spiritual traditions of the African Diaspora under the artistic direction of Chanon Judson and Samantha Speis. Off the concert stage, UBW has developed an extensive community engagement program, BOLD (Builders, Organizers, and Leaders Through Dance). UBW’s largest community engagement project is its Summer Leadership Institute (SLI). This 10-day intensive training program connects dance professionals with community-based artists/activists in a learning experience to leverage the arts as a vehicle for civic engagement. In 2016, UBW launched the Choreographic Center Initiative, which supports the development of women choreographers of color and other underheard voices.

About Juilliard Dance

Under the direction of Alicia Graf Mack, Juilliard Dance develops artists of the 21st century—trained in ballet, modern, and contemporary dance forms. With the establishment of the dance division in 1951—by then-president William Schuman with the guidance of founding division director Martha Hill—Juilliard became the first major teaching institution to combine equal instruction in both modern and ballet techniques. In the four-year dance program—leading to a bachelor of fine arts degree—students learn the great traditions of both past and present. Juilliard dancers enjoy unparalleled opportunities to work with today’s leading choreographers and perform both new and existing repertory. In addition to high caliber technical training and performances, dancers learn about the craft of choreography and immerse themselves in other facets of the field. Located at Lincoln Center in New York City, Juilliard prepares dancers for all the possibilities that lie ahead. Juilliard dance alumni include the choreographers and directors Robert Battle, Pina Bausch, Jessica Lang, Lar Lubovitch, Andrea Miller, Ohad Naharin, and Paul Taylor. Juilliard dancers are currently dancing in Nederlands Dans Theater, Nederlands Dans Theater 2, Ballet BC, BJM, L.A. Dance Project, Limón Dance Company, GöteborgsOperans Danskompani, Ballett des Saarländisches Staatstheater, Kidd Pivot, and Batsheva Dance Company, among many others, as well as in several Broadway productions. The Juilliard Dance Division, proud recipient of the 2015 Capezio Award, was the first educational institution to receive the honor.

Bennalldra WilliamsShelter, Stager

Bennalldra Williams, after having worked with the Alabama Ballet and Cleo Parker Robinson Dance, started her work with Urban Bush Women (UBW) in 2006 as a company member and spent six seasons as part of the touring ensemble. She credits her studies with Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, its founder and her continued teachings as part of UBW’s BOLD (Builders, Organizers, and Leaders Through Dance), as being foundational in her work as a restager. After touring, she founded her own company, Bové, a New York-based health and wellness practice that centers arts, body education, movement and community practice to promote wellbeing. Her practice as as an Integrative movement coach changes the way people move and experience movement. She is the movement coach for UBW and other dance companies.

Paloma McGregorShelter, Stager

Paloma McGregor is a Caribbean-born, New York-based choreographer who makes Black work with Black folks for Black space. A former newspaper reporter and editor, McGregor brings a choreographer’s craft, journalist’s urgency, and community organizer’s framework in the service of big visions. Over the past decade, she’s used performance practice to explore how the body’s presence (or absence) can impel community-driven transformation in embattled public spaces. McGregor is co-founder and artistic director of Angela’s Pulse. Her work has been supported by fellowships from Open Society Foundation, Dance/USA, Urban Bush Women’s Choreographic Center Institute, and Surdna Foundation’s Artists Engaging in Social Change. McGregor won a Bessie Award for performance as a member of skeleton architecture, a collective of Black women(+) improvisers. McGregor is developing A’we deh ya, a multiyear, multidisciplinary performance project aimed at activating a call-and-response between the U.S. mainland and her homeland, St. Croix, a current U.S. colony. The first iteration, a dance film, has been screened at film festivals in the U.S. and internationally, and is a finalist for a jury prize at the Denton Black Film Festival. A'we is the latest iteration of her project Building a Better Fishtrap, rooted in her father’s vanishing fishing tradition and the animating questions she’s asked since leaving her ancestral home: “What do you take with you? Leave behind? Return to reclaim?” McGregor danced with UBW from 2005 to 2011, including performing in the Bessie-winning Walking With Pearl: The Southern Diaries, the international collaboration Les Escailles de la Memoire, and the Hurricane Katrina-inspired revival of Shelter. She is associate director of UBW’s annual Summer Leadership Institute.
