First Lady Michelle Obama
W:1en people ask First Lady Michelle Obama to describe herself, she doesn't hesitate to say that first and foremost, she
is Malia and Sasha's mom. But before she was a mother - or a wife,
lawyer or public servant - she was Fraser and Marian Robinson's daughter.
The Robinsons lived in a brick bungalow on the South Side of Chicago. Fraser was a pump operator for the Chicago Water Department, and despite being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at a young age , he hardly ever missed a day of work. Marian stayed home to raise Michelle and her older brother Craig, skillfully managing a busy household filled with love, laughter, and important life lessons.
A product of Chicago public schools, Mrs. Obama studied sociology and African-American studies at Princeton University. After graduating from Harvard Law School in 1988, she joined the Chicago law firm Sidley & Austin, where she later met the man who would become the love of her life.
After a few years, Mrs. Obama decided her true calling was working with people to serve their communities and their neighbors. She served as assistant commissioner of planning and development in Chicago's City Hall before becoming the founding executive director of the Chicago chapter of Public Allies, an AmeriCorps program that prepares youth for public service.
In 1996, Mrs. Obama joined the University of Chicago with a vision of bringing campus and community together. As Associate Dean of Student Services, she developed the university's first community service program, and under her leadership as Vice President of Community and External Affairs for the University of Chicago Medical Center, volunteerism skyrocketed.
Promoting service and working with young people has remained a staple of her career and her interest. Continuing this effort now as First Lady, Mrs. Obama recently launched the Let's Move! campaign to bring together community leaders, teachers , doctors, nurses , moms and dads in a nationwide effort to tackle the challenge of childhood obesity. Let's Move! has an ambitious but important goal: to solve the epidemic of childhood obesity within a generation.
Let's Move! will give parents the support they need, provide healthier food in schools, help our kids to be more physically active, and make healthy, affordable food available in every part of our country.
As First Lady, Mrs. Obama looks forward to continuing her work on the issues close to her heart - supporting military families , helping working women balance career and family , encouraging national service, promoting the arts and arts education, and fostering healthy eating and healthy living for children and families across the country.
Michelle and Barack Obama have two daughters: Malia, 12, and Sasha, 9. Like their mother, the girls were born on the South Side of Chicago.

The Academic Procession
The procession begins with the entrance of the candidates for degrees. Led by faculty marshals, the candidates for the degree of Bachelor of Arts, both the Teaching Program and the Liberal
Arts Program, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Liberal Studies, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Technology enter in groups, representing each of the undergraduate colleges. They are followed by the candidates for the highest degrees.
Students wearing a bronze medallion are those graduating summa cum laude (with highest honors), which represent the top three percent of each college by grade point average; or those graduating students receiving a Purple and Old Gold Award, given to those students who have excelled in scholarship or who have shown conspicuous achievement in particular areas.
The procession continues with representatives of the faculty.
The President's Party forms the final section of the academic procession. Headed by the commencement marshal, it includes the president; members of the Board of Regents, state of
Iowa; administrative officers; the academic deans; and honored guests.
The commencement marshal carries the University Mace, designed and fashioned for the Centennial Commencement in 1976 by Randall Swanson, at that time a freshman majoring in Industrial Arts. A traditional symbol of authority, the mace is a carved wood rod capped with ends of cast bronze, with the top carrying the seal of the university. The president wears a jeweled "Chain of Office" symbolizing the wearer is the leader of the institution. The silver chain includes links with the names of previous presidents of the institution , as well as previous names of the university.
The academic costumes worn trace their origin to the Middle Ages when long-sleeved hooded gowns were necessary for warmth in the unheated stone colleges. Over the centuries, much
diversity occurred , and to bring some order, in the United States in 1894 an intercollegiate system of academic costume was agreed on, now adhered to by American institutions. According to this code, both the styling and colors of the regalia have significance.
The design of the gown indicates the degree. The bachelor's is a simple gown with a full sleeve. The master's gown is much like it except for the long sleeve which hangs loose. The doctoral gown is fuller and more elaborate. It has velvet edging and three velvet stripes on the full sleeve. The color of this velvet may be black or in the color appropriate to the degree.
Hoods, which are worn over the gowns, are similar for all degrees, although differing slightly in length. The candidates for the bachelor's degrees usually do not wear the hood. The hood has a velvet edging which indicates the area of the degree, and the inside or lining of the hood is satin in the colors of the college or university granting the degree.
A partial list of the degree colors to be found on the edge of the hood or the trimming on the doctoral gown is as follows:
Apricot - Nursing Blue, dark - Philosophy Blue, light - Education Brown - Fine Arts Citron - Social Science Copper - Economics
Drab - Business Green - Medicine Green Sage - Physical Education Lemon - Library Science Maize - Agriculture Maroon - Family and Consumer Sciences
5
Orange - Engineering Pink - Music Purple - Law Scarlet - Theology White - Arts and Letters Yellow, Golden - Science

Lux Service Award Since 1984
The University of Northern Iowa Lux Service Award is presented annually to those undergraduate students who best represent the ideal of service to the University community.
The honor is conferred in the spirit of keeping the light of service to others burning bright at UNI. The name of the award - Lux - is from the University's official seal that features a burning lamp of knowledge and the Latin word for light.
The award is presented by the Dean of Students and sponsored by the University of Northern Iowa Alumni Association.
Congratulations to the 2011 Lux Service Award Recipients:
Darion Watson is an organizational communication major from Ga1y, Indiana. Darion has made many lasting contributions through his service to UNI. He serves as a student admissions ambassador and currently serves as vice p resident of membership. He is active in residence life, serving as a resident assistant for the past three years. He is a youth tutor and mentor for the UNI Upward Bound program and is a career services peer advisor. In addition, he serves on a number of campus committees and is the founder of the UNI Black Male Leaders Union. According to one nominator, "Darion touched the lives of all of our students, and they are all much better for having him in their lives as a mento r and role model. " Another recommendation described Darion as "one of the most caring and selfless people I have encountered at UNI, and it is a true joy to be in his presence ." In addition to the Lux recognition, Darion was honored recently as the UNI and State of Iowa Student Employee of the Year.
Jacob Rudy is a political science and sociology major from Radcliffe, Iowa. Jake has made involvement and service a centerpiece of his college experience. He served as student body vice-president and represented students on many university committees, including the ADA Facility Compliance subcommittee, intercollegiate athletics reaccred itation steering committee, and UNI Strategic Planning Committee to name a few. In addition, Jake works as a peer advisor in residence, was a member of the summer orientation staff, and is involved in numerous student organizations. One recommendation summarized Jake 's legacy in stating, "while the sheer quantity of ways Jake has provided service to UNI may initially seem most impressive, his true legacy on this campus is tied to the genuine spirit of care he brings to each of his volunteer and leadership roles ... the carefu lly considered student voice he has given to many important policy discussions has changed this campus for the better."
Adam Haselhuhn is a political science and political communication major from Des Moines, Iowa. Adam's service to UNI has spanned all levels of student involvement. He served as student body president and provided leadership and guidance to key university initiatives including the UNI Strategic Planning Committee, Diversity Council, and the First Year Council among others. Additionally, Adam has been involved in Relay for Life, Maucker Union Adviso1y Board, Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, inte rfraternity council, College Hill Partnership, and numerous co-curricular activities. "While Adam's service as student body president was a very visible manifestation of his leadership and service to UNI, it is his continuing involvement in service outside of the official limelight which illustrates how truly exemplary he is," according to his nominators. Another recommendation added, "his courage to use his authority as president to spark administrative action in times of concern and his continued commitment to advancing the dialogue for diversity truly make him stand out."
