Purpose: In today's lab we had to observe an unusual surface property of water that resulted from the hydrogen bonding. In which some reactions we had during the lab were never seen or experience.

Materials:

Shallow dish

Water

Paper clip

Rubber band

Droppers

Vegetable oilliquid dish detergent

Procedure:

Thoroughly clean and dry the dish

Fill the dish almost full with water(dry your hands)

Being careful not to break the surface, gently place the paper clip on the water then observe what happened.

Repeat steps 1 and 2

Gently place the open rubber band on the water surface without breaking it.

Slowly add oil drop onto the water encircled by the rubber band until the water is covered with a layer of oil. Then observe for 15 seconds.

Allow one drop of dish detergent to fall onto the center of the oil layer. Then observe again what happen.

Conclusion/analysis

While doing this lab I was able to learn many new things that I had never experience before. We had to observe the surface property in water. This lab made us realize that the paper clip cant float when its wet or either . When the rubber band didn’t quite change shape it just expanded in which made the oil take more control of the water. When I dropped a drop of dish detergent onto the layer of the circle it reacted so fast in which the oil layer collide and break into pieces. When that happen the dish detergent went down onto the ground of the dish. After observing this lab I experience a unknown reaction on the oil when it received the drop of dish detergent in which made me think that we learned something new.

Standard 1d; students know how to use the periodic table to determine the number of electrons avaiable for bonding .
