It is a huge fantastic day celebrating Jesus. Sometimes it can be crazy getting ready for the big events of the year. Preparing Easter baskets, picking out the right clothes to wear, preparing delicious food, having kids search for candy-filled eggs. On that first Easter people’s lives were filled as well. They had questions and were discussing instead of accepting what Jesus told them was going to happen. Back then and even now on Easter, Jesus strives to grab our attention. In Luke 24 Jesus drew near to two men who had heard that he had risen and were filled with questions. Did this really happen? Is He alive? What does this mean? That first Easter Jesus responded, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Was it not necessary that Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” (Luke 24:25-26) Why did He call them foolish? They had walked with Him and talked with Him IN PERSON and still didn’t get it! Just as many times in life we don’t get it. Why is this happening? What are you doing Lord? God has been speaking truth for us to lean on since Adam and Eve. In Luke 24 Jesus begins to re- explain the truth of who He was, and what he came to do based on the Old Testament. “And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.” (Luke 24:27) Easter is not just a New Testament story. It is something that God has been sharing generation after generation. What was Jesus quoting from the Old Testament about who He was and what He came to do? There are well over 300 Old Testament verses talking about Jesus. Who He is. What He will do. Where He will go. Why He came. From the time of Adam and Eve (Genesis 3:15) through the time of Moses (Numbers 24:17), and as prophets came (Isaiah 52:13-15, 53:1- 12) the message of Jesus was made clear (Psalm 22, Daniel 9:24-26, Micah 5:2, etc.). Easter is not a one day event. It is the greatest day in an ongoing story of the love and actions of our Savior. As St. Luke’s gets ready for Easter, there are many opportunities to help us get it! It all begins on Ash Wednesday. Each Wednesday leading up to Easter we will be digging into the book of Galatians to discover what Jesus is saying to us. Our sermon series called “Idol Worship” addresses the things that take our eyes off Jesus. Along with it there is a Bible study for individuals or small groups to dive deep into the Word of God. May this Easter be more than a day. Help us grow in Him as we learn and remind ourselves of the words and actions of Jesus. He is Risen! Pastor Chris Davis

eaSTer iS cOming!

That first Easter Jesus responded, “O foolish

LENT AND EASTER 2015Lent ServicesFebruary 18 - March 25Saturday/Sunday Services-“Idol Distractions” There are many different things that grab ahold of our attention and focus in life. This worship series will help us identify how these draw us away from Jesus and how to avoid break free from the idols in our lives.

Individual or Small Group Bible StudyWe understand all the God has done for us, yet we have our own idols. While we are doing a worship series on “Idol Distractions,” this study will delve deeper into Biblical applications for each of our lives. Join a small group or dig in on your own. Either way you can pick it up at church or check our website.

Ash Wednesday-“No Other Gospel”February 18As Lent begins we will be diving into the book of Galatians on Wednesday nights. One of the ways we start this season is by marking ourselves with a cross of ashes on our foreheads. That morning from 6-9 am you are welcome to come and be marked with ashes by Pastor Chris. At worship that night ashes are applied and we begin preparing for the incredible gift of God on Easter. Students going through Communion class receive it for the first time on this night!

Wednesday Services-“No Other Gospel” During Lent we will be studying the incredible book of Galatians written by Paul. Each week we will be taking on a chapter in depth. We will be looking at what Paul is trying to teach newer Christians and strong believers in Jesus.

Easter WeekMarch 29 - April 5In Christ the Victory has been won! As we prepare to celebrate Jesus’ week of teaching, suffering, death, and resurrection, we will be looking at the battle. For us this year we start on Palm Sunday grabbing hold of the “Declaration” that our Lord longs for us to hear. Then we continue with the Maundy Thursday service as a “Preparation” for the things ahead. On Good Friday we examine the harshness of the “War” Christ endured for us. Finally on Easter we rejoice in the “Victory” Jesus has won!

A NOTE FROM PASTOR JAKE

Bible Wars Charis

Twenty-Something Events

Jake AllstaedtAssociate Pastor

[email protected]

Our graciOuS gOd encourages us through the writer of Hebrews to continue to meet together “as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near” (Hebrews 10:25). What a gift it is to meet together on a regular basis to study God’s Word, receive His good gifts, and encourage one another. We need each other and we are stronger together. Our youth group is designed to continue meeting together on a weekly basis at the very least! I want to encourage all Ignite age youth (grades 7-12) to come to our weekly mid-week youth group, Light it Up! The weekly schedule is as follows:

High School (Grades 9-12) Light it Up!: Tuesdays, 7:00-8:30pm, Malkow Hall

Middle School (Grades 7-8) Light it Up!: Wednesdays, 7:00-8:30pm, Malkow Hall

We have the added gift of Wednesday night services during the season of Lent. During that time, Middle School Light it Up! will continue to meet. Middle Schoolers will attend the service from 7:00-8:00pm and enjoy games in the gym from 8:00-8:30pm. Mid-week Lent services begin on Ash Wednesday, February 18, and continue through Wednesday, March 25. High School is also encouraged to come to the mid-week services—they’re a great opportunity to get deeper into God’s Word. And, as always, friends encouraged to come!

What special events are coming up for youth? Well, I’m glad you asked! Here’s the biggest one: it’s almost time for the 2015 All Youth Retreat! Four teams, or “houses” will square off once again in a weekend of intense competition, encouragement, and worship. Who will take home the AYR trophy!? Any and all youth grades 7-12—especially friends!—are invited to be a part of this one-of-a-kind weekend! The 2015 All Youth Retreat is April 17-19. Youth will need to sign-up in advance. Stay on the lookout for registration. I will warn you that prices will increase this year, but we will be able to help with that cost.

All of our summer mission trip applications are now available in the office. Our mission trips include Gleaners (7th-8th), the Bronx (11th), and Hoonah (9th-12th). If you are interested in serving in one of these mission trips, grab an application form and be on the lookout for meetings! If you turn in an application form, we’ll be in contact! If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact me!

Only Because of Jesus, Pastor Jake

The Bible Wars card game helps kids dig deeper into scripture in a fun way! They include Bible verses, pictures of places and people, and competitive play designed to help kids grow in their understanding of the Bible (and parents too!). Check out this game on May 1 at 6:00 pm in Malkow Hall. Kids from grades 1-8 will be receiving cards for attending their Sunday school classes.

Our Mother/Daughter Tea in January was wonderful! The tables were beautifully decorated with lovely settings. We dressed up, had tea, tried different foods, and enjoyed conversations around the table. The Charis leaders were hostesses and waitresses enabling all the moms and daughters to enjoy their time together. What an excellent way to spend a Saturday morning!

April 11, Charis leaders will be hosting the Father/Daughter Scavenger Hunt. We’ve done this with mothers and daughter before. Now it’s time to get the fathers on board and racing against time. Meet in the Great Room Lobby. The event starts at 10am.

We will be getting together twice a month and connecting with each other. There will be studies on different topics (finances, dating, jobs, and fun!). There are opportunities to join us and grow in a relationship with Jesus. If you have questions, please contact Pastor Chris for dates and information at 253.941.3000.

GOD STORY

COLLEGE & SEMINARY SCHOLARSHIP FUND

BRIDGES

recenTly, i waS diShearTened by a “No” answer from the Lord. I was so disappointed! I walked around with a cloud over my head for days and days. I had been reading the Psalms and came to Psalm 27:14, “Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!” I read that verse over and over and knew God wanted me to pay attention. Just in case I didn’t get it, a few psalms later, there it was again, “Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for the Lord!” (31:24) And again, “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him.” (37:7) And again, “Wait for the Lord.” (37:34)

It’s so hard to wait! Did you notice part two in a couple of those verses? Not only does God call us to wait, but to be strong and have courage. What! I can’t be depressed and irritated? I can’t crawl into my shell and let the world pass me by?

Wait!byJanGrothe

God knows how difficult it is for us to be strong while we wait. He is not asking us to dig deep within ourselves for the strength we have; He is telling us that He will provide the strength and courage we need. “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1)

Has the situation been resolved? No. Am I still waiting? Yes. Sometimes I need to remind myself that I’m relying on God’s strength when I feel myself slipping, and then go back to the psalms and read His words over and over. God’s Word gives comfort, strength, and encouragement. “My soul waits for the Lord.” (Psalm 130:6) I’m thankful that God, in His abundant love, provides – even as I wait.

Our mission statement reads, “To provide a Christ-centered, caring & nurturing bridge between generations.”

Adults and children feel the benefits of trust, support, and encouragement from people at St. Luke’s who are using their God-given gifts and interests as they reach out to others. Relationships are being built through:

• Assisting with daily living tasks (transportation, tutoring, babysitting…)

• Socializing with adults and children (ball games, dinners, movie night..)

• Providing life-skill training (budgeting, organizing, mending, car upkeep…)

• Mentoring parents/children

Opportunities are expanding as adults and children bring their unique talents to this ministry and develop their spiritual lives.

If you would like to be involved and help families, please contact Debbie Fuller: [email protected].

We are excited to announce the establishment of a college and seminary scholarship fund. This fund was made possible through the Don and Lita Sippy Estate as a result of their passion for education and deep love of St Luke’s. This scholarship is available to current members of St. Luke’s who are pursuing their undergraduate or seminary studies. Applications are currently available in the church office. Completed applications are due to church office by Wednesday, April 1, 2015. Award recipients will be contacted by the beginning of May. If you have any questions, please contact Valerie Danforth: [email protected] or Todd Zern: [email protected].

2014 Mission Plan Performance(July–December 2014)

Income (Church, School, Childcare)General Fund offerings of $649,094 are under budget by $79,051 (-11%). Compared to this same time last year, FY15 giving has decreased by 1.9% (December 2013 YTD = $661,879). Total YTD income (including interest income, facility outreach/rentals, schools, childcare and building fund) of $1,040,132 falls below budget by 5%.

ExpensesPersonnel expenses are under budget by 4% (-$26,785) primarily with church staff (Pastor of Outreach budgeted to begin in October and Director of Worship & Arts in September). Operating expenses are over budget by $7,884 primarily because of maintenance and groundskeeping projects occurring early in the year. Historically, operating expenses slow down in the third and fourth quarters. After mortgage principal payments and capital improvements, the budget deficit of $13,204 falls behind FY15 YTD budget expectations by $28,660. The budget deficit is absorbed by cash reserves.

General Fund CashGeneral Fund cash reserves at the end of this reporting period is $771,986 ($39,725 increase versus this time last year). Giving: 2nd Quarter (July–December 2014)

2014-2015 Capital ImprovementsFirst of all, thank you so much for your continued generosity in supporting the Building Fund.
