WIDE RANGE OF TOPICS COVERED AT
FACULTY RETREAT
The Department of FM Faculty held their annual
retreat on March 26, 2015. The agenda included
family medicine residency milestones, curriculum and
didactics, in addition to a population health
presentation by FM Prev Med resident, Richard
Bruno, MD.
In addition, Dr. Goodell facilitated a presentation and
discussion around MedStar Health initiatives that
impact family medicine as well as the broad based
initiative, Family Medicine for America's Health
(Health is Primary), a new healthcare commitment
with the goal of positioning family medicine with
strategic and communication plans to create better
health care and lower costs for patients and
communities.
DR. GORDON CONTINUES WORK WITH
“SHOULDER TO SHOULDER
FOUNDATION"
After leaving the hustle and bustle of Baltimore and landing in Honduras, Dr. Lauren Gordon and a team of colleagues affiliated with the Shoulder to Shoulder Foundation, ascend on a long drive on thin roads winding through mountains, ultimately ending up in clinics housed in small villages throughout the region. Their mission and that of the "Shoulder to Shoulder" organization is to work with communities in the Intibuca region to create and operate sustainable health, nutrition, and education services with equitable access for everyone in the rural frontera of Honduras. For one week, Dr. Gordon once again had familiarity with sparse electricity and limited resources to help people who have had very little or no access to healthcare. Dr. Gordon worked both in the clinic in Pinares as well as hiked to local villages to do outreach care for children in these villages. Welcome back Dr. Gordon and thank you for your continued work in global health.

BLOOD PRESSURE INITIATIVE IN FULL
SWING WITH PROVIDER-SPECIFIC BP
REPORTS, HOME BLOOD PRESSURE
MONITORING PILOT AND COMMUNITY
ENGAGEMENT
About Blood Pressure Reports
Matthew Burke, MD is currently training FHC staff on
PopulationManager®, a program that has the ability to
aggregate data from our electronic health records.
The goal is to have the ability to generate monthly
provider/team specific reports for our uncontrolled
hypertensive patients in the FHC. These lists would then be
given to providers/team secretaries and those patients
would be scheduled for follow up specifically for
hypertension.
Congratulations to Dr. Burke whose abstract, “Population
Management for Hypertension: A collaborative project with
AMA/Johns Hopkins Improving Health Outcomes,” was
accepted for an oral presentation at the Maryland Chronic
Disease Conference on Sept 8-9, 2015.
And congratulations to our team on improving blood
pressure outcomes by 11% (68.1% as of Dec 2014) since
the end of FY 2014 (57.7%).
About the FHC Home BP Monitoring Pilot
Drs. Jay Chung, Crystal Peralta and Mike Niehoff in
addition to CMAs, Julie Owens and Leah Schueler, are
facilitating blood pressure teaching clinics for our
hypertensive patients on Friday afternoons once a month.
To date, the team has run nine patients through the home
BP monitoring pilot and we are currently supporting five
patients.
FHC Community Engagement Pilot Work Continues
Avinash Narine, MD and Sallie Rixey, MD, MEd, are
championing community engagement work that includes
facilitating the placement of self monitoring blood pressure
machines with community resource partners in our
catchment area. This pilot will work to identify which factors
contribute to successful collaborations between the Family
Health Center and community partners.
Dr. Richard Bruno
had a very
insightful interview
with President
Clinton for his
public health
leadership class.
Dr. Bruno adds,
"The main part of
my work was to
give people the
chance to have
better stories."
"Mandatory togetherness" at the resident winter retreat
included ice skating! What a great group!
