SECTION I - ACADEMIC ADVISING

ADVISING RESPONSIBILITIES - STUDENTS It is strongly recommended that:

Students know the requirements and expectations of their

major, Core requirements, university policies and

procedures;

Students meet early in their academic career with their

advisor to develop an academic plan that will guide the

completion of their baccalaureate degree;

Students meet regularly with their department advisor to

assess and update their progress within their programs;

Students be responsible for maintaining an academic file

that includes: the WSU Catalog for their time of entry,

academic audit sheets, grade reports, registration records,

change of grade/change of major forms, etc.

Students consider keeping an academic portfolio for their

benefit in employment and professional interviews; Students know what it means to maintain satisfactory

academic standing (i.e., satisfactory GPA by attempted

credits):

0 - 23 credits 1.75

24+ credits 2.00 Students explore with their advisor various academic

opportunities (internships, co-ops, honors, exchange programs,

etc.) available through the institution or through their

discipline;

Students speak with their advisor to learn about the

various academic resources available (tutorial services,

study skills workshops, etc.) to support their success.

PREPARING FOR YOUR ADVISING SESSION 1. Prepare for your advising session by reviewing your online

degree evaluation (myWestfield – Academics – Registration

Tools – Degree Evaluation) and identifying courses you still

need to take. This is also a great opportunity to ensure any

waivers/substitutions have been filed and processed

accordingly.

2. If you have questions about whether specific courses taken

at other colleges satisfy Westfield State University Core

requirements, you must see the Assistant Registrar in the

Office of the Registrar. When there are questions about the

content of specific courses, the Assistant Registrar or Transfer Coordinator refers the decision to the Chair of the appropriate

academic department.

3. Look through this course offerings booklet and note on the

registration worksheet the courses you are interested in taking.

Keep in mind what courses you need to satisfy the Common

Core and your major. Consider elective courses outside these

areas that seem interesting. In selecting your elective courses,

please keep in mind the Westfield State University

PASS/FAIL Policy for 0200/0300 level courses. This policy

allows juniors and seniors to take upper level courses in areas outside their major and the Core for a grade of 'PS' or 'FL',

neither of which is used in calculating a student's GPA.

4. Using the University Catalog, make sure that you have

completed all required prerequisites for courses you have

selected. The Catalog is available online at

http://www.westfield.ma.edu/registrar

5. Since the most popular classes frequently close early in the registration process, you will want to have identified 10-12

possible courses for next semester by the time you have

completed your advising session, so be sure to compile a

comprehensive list of options.

ADVISING OUTCOMES

Comprehensive advising is a key factor in determining how

well-registered a student will be, so be sure to use your time

with your advisor to develop a thorough understanding of your

academic needs for the next semester. When you leave your

advising session, you should know:

what courses you must have in order to make reasonable progress toward the completion of your degree

what courses would be useful, but could be taken in another semester if necessary

and what courses may be taken as electives, in response to your own interests and preferences.

Students who complete their advising session with a list of

only five courses will ultimately be less well served than those

who are prepared with a full range of options.

ACADEMIC ADVISOR All students who have declared a major are assigned a

departmental advisor by the chair. If you do not know who

your advisor is, check with your department secretary or chair.

You may also view your advisor’s name through your

myWestfield account - academics tab.

ACADEMIC ADVISING CENTER

Advising and registration help is available on a walk-in basis

at the Academic Advising Center in Parenzo K/L for all

students and specifically for student who have undeclared

majors. You may now e-mail your advising questions to: [email protected]

SECTION II - POLICIES

ADVISING AND PIN

In order to guarantee that all students are advised prior to

registration, students will be required to present a signed

advising form to their department, at which time a new

Alternate Registration PIN will be issued. Use the new Alternate Registration PIN for online registration; bring a

signed advising sheet to use at in-person registration in

Parenzo Hall 107. See back cover for additional PIN

information.

ADD/DROP IN PARENZO HALL 107

1. ADJUST YOUR SEMESTER SCHEDULE. You may

drop any courses you do not wish to take or add new courses,

on a space available basis.

2. ADD/DROP runs through the first week of the semester.

Online add/drop is available from 7:00AM - 9:00PM (4:30PM

on the last day) and in-person from 8:30AM to 4:30PM in Parenzo Hall 107. Please consult the front cover for specific

dates.

3. PERMISSION TO ENROLL FORM Use this form if you

receive an error message for missing pre-requisite, co-

requisite, class, or need the permission of instructor.

4. INSTRUCTOR AUTHORIZATION TO ADD A DAY

CLASS (OVERLOAD) FORM If there is no space available

in a course that you need or want, you may be able to get

permission from the instructor to add that course. If an

instructor authorizes your enrollment on this form (some

departments may also require the Chair's signature), the computer operator will register you for the course, even if the

computer shows no space available. Forms are only available

during the published add/drop period.

5. SCHEDULE You will receive a printout of your revised

schedule. This is a good way to check that you are going to the

right classes. You may print your own copy through

myWestfield.

6. PERMISSION COURSES Courses that require special

permission, like internships, CO-OPS, and some upper level

electives may not be added through myWestfield. See the

instructor, or the chair of the department offering the course for information about adding these courses.

COURSE LOAD AND CLASS STANDING

Students who expect to graduate in four years should plan to

take 30 credits a year, or 15 credits a semester. If you drop

any courses, or fail courses, you will have to take summer or

winter session courses or extra courses during the semester to

keep the number of credits necessary to maintain your class

standing.

While the usual course load is 15 credits a semester, students

may carry from 12 to 18 credits as a full time student. Students wishing to carry more than 18 credits must get

special permission from their advisors, major department

chairs, and the Associate Dean of Academic Achievement.

The Academic Policies Committee recommends that students

have a minimum GPA of 2.5 to enroll in 19 or 20 credits and

3.0 to enroll in 21 credits. The approval form is available in

the Office of the Registrar.

COURSE REPEAT POLICY

Students may apply this policy a maximum of five times.

Students must file a completed course repeat form with the

Office of the Registrar prior to taking any course as a repeat.

Westfield courses can only be repeated with an identical Westfield course.

COURSE WITHDRAWAL

NOTATION OF "W"

The notation of "W" is an action taken by the student or

administration and is not a reflection of the student's

performance in the course. Students may withdraw from a

full-semester course up to three weeks prior to the last day of

classes (up to two weeks prior to the last day of classes for

half-semester courses) by completing a Course Withdrawal

form. A notation of "W" will be placed on the student’s record

for courses dropped during this period.

SPRING 2014 Deadlines for Course Withdrawals

Full Semester Monday, April 14, 2014

Session A Friday, February 21, 2014

Session B Tuesday, April 22, 2014

Students not attending a course will be issued an "F" grade on

their record. The grade will be used in computing semester

and cumulative average. COURSE WITHDRAWAL FORMS

ARE AVAILABLE IN THE OFFICE OF THE REGISTRAR.

Administrative offices can withdraw students for cause. Reasons for administrative withdrawal may include

non-payment of tuition and fees, lack of health forms or final

high school transcripts, academic failure or probation,

over-enrollment in a single semester, and/or disciplinary

action. The notation of "W" is made on the student's record

for all courses dropped administratively.

CROSS REGISTRATION INTO DGCE CLASSES

Beginning on the first day of classes, online and in Parenzo

Hall 107, Day students will be permitted to register for up to

three Continuing Education (DGCE) classes as part of their

Day load, on a space-available basis. Students will not be assessed any additional tuition charges for these courses.

Continuing Education add/drop tuition waivers may not be

used for a special arrangement, independent study, internship,

or graduate level (0400+) course. DGCE sections begin with a

‘5’, example: 501, 50A, etc…E01 Sections ARE available to

day division students during pre-registration as listed in the

course grid. DGCE students wishing to cross-register into day

classes, should consult with the DGCE office for specific

dates.

DECLARING / CHANGING A MAJOR

Students must declare a major by the beginning of their junior

year. Students wishing to declare or change their major can

pick-up a change of major form in the Office of the Registrar.

This form requires the signature of the chair of the major you

are dropping and the chair of the new major. If you wish to change your major in time to register , you must do so before

the advising period.

DECLARING A MINOR

1. Students may declare a minor at any time by submitting a

Declaration of Minor form to the Office of the Registrar,

Parenzo 107.

2. The chair of the academic department must approve minor

declarations.

3. Students may not have more than two declared minors in

progress at one time, however, can earn more than two.

4. Minors, like majors, are reviewed prior to a student’s graduation.

5. Students who complete minors without formally declaring

them may still have them certified prior to graduation.

DIRECTORY INFORMATION RELEASE

Directory information includes a student’s name, address,

class standing, major, and date of birth. There are some

contexts in which the college is required to release this

information to third parties. These include military recruiters

and the National Student Clearinghouse (NSC). The NSC

provides student loan processors with enrollment information to determine a student’s eligibility for loan. In addition, other

third parties may request this data under the Freedom of

Information Act. A more detailed policy concerning FERPA

(Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) can be found in

the current Catalog.

Students may place a directory release block on their records.

When this block is in place, we suppress the student’s data

when we produce our listings. Such requests must be made in

writing in the Office of the Registrar by October 1st each year.

We cannot suppress the release of student directory data to the

NSC.

LIBERAL STUDIES MAJORS

Students who are majoring in interdisciplinary programs, such

as Liberal Studies, must have their areas of concentration

noted on their registration forms by their advisors. The student

may register for ONE major course in each concentration area

with the same registration access as majors within the

department. Additional courses must be selected from the

seats available to everyone as Core elective choices, or the

student must have special permission from the chair of the

academic department in which he/she wishes to take more than one course. Liberal Studies students may need to go to

Parenzo Hall 107 or Parenzo Hall K/L for assistance in

registering for a major course, if they are restricted to students

in a particular major.

NEW STUDENT INFORMATION

All incoming students should have a copy of the University

Catalog for the current academic year. That is the version of

the Catalog that states the program requirements and

academic policies that apply to you. The Catalog is available

online at www.westfield.ma.edu/registrar.

PREREQUISITES and SELF-REGISTRATION

Students are responsible for meeting all course prerequisites

before registering into upper-level courses. Prerequisites are

listed in course descriptions in the University Catalog. The

Catalog is available online at www.westfield.ma.edu/registrar.

Faculty members have the right to exclude students from

courses if they are missing the listed prerequisites.

REGISTRATION CORRECTNESS

You have final responsibility for the correctness of your

registration. Be sure to check a final printout of your schedule carefully, and to keep any forms or documentation

REGISTRATION FOR SPECIAL CLASSES

1. Internships/Co-ops/Permission Courses: Internships, co-

op courses and other special courses require the professor's

permission to register. Please see the instructor prior to

registration to secure a permission to register form. Bring this

form with you to in-person registration in Parenzo Hall 107,

and the course will be added to your schedule when you select

your other classes. Please see the Assistant Registrar if you have any questions about registering for permission courses.

CO-OP is administered through the Career Services Office,

Lammers Hall Annex.

2. Independent Study and Courses by Special Arrangement:

Students wishing to enroll in departmental Independent Study

projects must process a registration form for Independent

Study or Course by Special Arrangement, available in the

academic department. This form requires a description of

each project and must be approved by the faculty member,

department chairperson, and the Dean of Undergraduate

Studies. FRESHMEN ARE INELIGIBLE. Students may take

only one independent study in any given semester and not more than four in their undergraduate work at Westfield State.

Students must register for the Independent Study credits by the

end of add/drop. See the semester calendar on p. 2 for the

deadline to submit your form.

STUDENT ACCOUNT CLEARANCE

A student’s account must be clear in order to register for

classes. You can check the status of your account online or by

checking in the Student Services Center or by calling (413)

572-5218. If you owe money to the University, you must pay

it in order to release the registration hold on your account. The billing and payment schedule is as follows:

November/July - Bills will be mailed to students,

anticipated financial aid awards will be credited to the

bill.

Return your payment and paperwork before the due date

published on the bill. Bills postmarked after the due date

are charged a $100.00 late payment fee.

ALL STUDENTS SHOULD RETURN THEIR

PAPERWORK, WHETHER TUITION IS OWED OR

NOT! RETURNED PAPERWORK SHOWS INTENT

TO RETURN FOR THE SEMESTER.

What will happen if you don’t return your bill? Students who

have not returned their payment and paperwork by the due

date will be administratively withdrawn from the University. They will no longer have a schedule or housing assignment.

Class schedules and housing will not be restored. Withdrawn

students cannot register until add/drop and there is a

reinstatement fee assessed for reentry; housing may no longer

be available.

TUITION SURCHARGE POLICY

Effective Fall 1999, the Board of Higher Education adopted a

tuition surcharge to assess the full cost of education for

continuously enrolled native students who accumulate an

excessive number of credits. Excessive credit hours are

defined as 118% of academic degree program credit hour requirements. Any student who is enrolled in over 141

accumulated credit hours will be assessed $235.00 for each

credit hour over 141. Students wishing to appeal this policy

should submit a written request to the Maureen McCartney,

Associate Dean Academic Achievement.

UNDECLARED MAJORS

Undeclared freshmen and sophomores may use one seat

reserved for majors to register for ONE foundation course in

ONE academic area they are exploring if available. All other

courses must be selected from seats available to everyone as Core or elective choices. Undeclared students may need to go

to Parenzo Hall 107 or Parenzo Hall K/L for assistance in

registering for a foundation course, if they are restricted to

students in the major.

Honors upper level courses/seminars

PSYC 354-H01 Altruism, Resilience and Heroism

31316 MW 01:40-02:55 Dutch, S.

What makes a person a hero? We will define heroic acts as

those based on altruism and resilience. True heroes need not

have superhuman abilities nor do they need to act alone. We

will explore how heroism in real life differs from the heroism

of myths and legends. We will learn about prosocial behavior

and how it develops. We will study the remarkable stories of

diverse individuals who acted as heroes by "just doing their

jobs" during crises, such as war. Along the way, we will

survey the meanings of heroism in U.S. popular culture,

evaluate programs meant to increase heroism in young

children and promote resilience in soldiers, and conclude with a theory of "ordinary" heroism.

ECON 350-H01 Indigenous Knowledge, Environmental

Management and Sustainability

31291 MW 03:10-04:25 Sackett, H.

This course will examine the multi-dimensional relationship

between indigenous populations and the environment with a

focus on the ways in which indigenous people of North

America have constructed their relation to the natural world

through oral tradition, kinship, and ceremony. Students will

explore the connections between indigenous traditional ecological knowledge and the sustainable management of

water, soil, fisheries, forests and wildlife. Students will use

models to describe the environmental impacts of indigenous

strategies for conserving natural resources, promoting

biodiversity, and preventing degradation of health, land, and

culture. This course will rely on a variety of learning tools,

including: independent readings, cooperative dialogue,

presentations, film and guest lectures from scholars in

Indigenous Studies, Economics, Environmental Science and

Anthropology.

Once you select the link, a new window will automatically

launch and load your specific degree audit information. Make sure you have any pop-up blockers shut off on your browser.

Mac users must use the Safari browser. Some important items

to keep in mind as you review your audit for the first time:

You can find your advisor’s name in the upper left-hand corner of the audit

If your major requires a concentration and one is

missing, please stop by the Registrar’s Office to

declare (Movement Science majors, please see the

Movement Science department to be signed into a

concentration).

There is a detailed “FAQ” page at the top of the audit

that will help you interpret and solve potential

problems.

If you have any concerns about missing requirements

that you feel you have satisfied, please see your departmental academic advisor to submit a

waiver/substitution form. These forms must be

signed by the Department Chair as well (for core

waivers the Dean of Undergraduate Studies must

approve and sign).

If you are double majoring, you may need to select

each audit separately. Click on the degree drop-down

box at the top of the audit next to your name

for additional options.

Your audit is based on the requirements outlined in

the Catalog typically from the year you entered,

however, departments have the right to require more

recent requirements if you changed your major after

starting WSU. If you feel your audit is reflecting the wrong catalog year, please see your department chair

or the Registrar’s Office.
