It appears we are to have a Mongolian flavoured reign… how exciting!
This would be a good opportunity to learn a bit about Mongolian history...Make some Mongolian garb and cook some Mongolian foods. Woo-hoo! research on the horizon. Brewers, any chance of you getting some mare’s milk so we can have a taste of Ayrag or Kumis as it is also known?

Trivia: the Myth
Part 7 of ‘The Bad Old Days’: Pork: the origin of phrases such as ‘Bring home the bacon’ and ‘chew the fat’
Sometimes they (peasants) could obtain pork, which made them feel quite special. When visitors came over, they would hang up their bacon to show off. It was a sign of wealth that a man "could bring home the bacon." They would cut off a little to share with guests and would all sit around and "chew the fat."

Tom didn’t wait. He didn’t finish dressing, he just ran. He hadn’t had breakfast and
he should have felt hungry, but his stomach felt heavy, as if he’d swallowed a huge
stone.
He felt as if the stone in his belly slowed him down. He felt as if he was running through sticky honey. He felt like he was running on the spot and never getting where he was going. He felt like it was a nightmare.
His Da could not be sick enough to need the healer. He never had been that sick before. What if something happened to him? Tom’s breath sobbed in his throat as he
ran. He gulped the sobs down. If he was the man of the family, he could not afford the time to cry, he had to do what he had to do. He gritted his teeth, and ran on.
He ran over the bridge by the water mill and up toward the oak forest, the one that was used for pig pannage. Just before he reached it, he veered off to the left, up a small
lane to a tiny cottage tucked in beside the stream.
Gulping for breath, he hammered on the door, “Goody Hannah, Goody Hannah” he
gasped.
The door creaked open, and old Hannah stood there, peering out. “Is it yourself Tom?”
she asked.
“Aye, can you come quickly? Its…it’s… me Da – Mam said it’s the sweating sickness, and he’s going yellow and he makes a funny noise when he breathes. Can you fix him Goody? Can you?” Tom waited anxiously, catching and holding his breath.
Goody Hannah looked sober, “Yellow skin … hmmm.” She turned away and started putting herbs, and other things, into a basket. “He’s sweating … does he have chills
too, lad?”
Tom nodded, “Aye, I - I think so”.
She added more herbs to the basket. “Now, give me your arm lad,” she said and
tucking her hand into his arm, she hobbled out the door and turned toward the village.
Glossary:
pannage Can mean 1pasturage for pigs in a forest; 2the right to pasture your pigs in the forest; 3payment for pasturing your pigs in the forest; 4the acorns, beech mast etc on which pigs feed when they are pasturing in the forest. (In the story the oak forest was used to pasture the pigs, so they could eat the acorns.)
A Page 4 Pages Here is the second part of chapter 5 of our story about Tom, the half Welsh, half Saxon boy living on the Welsh/English border. Previously, Tom did his morning chores then worked in the field with his Da. On the way home, Tom discovered a dead body, and his Da carried it to the church. Next morning Da was very sick…
