2 Foundation Focus

SMMC Successfully Completes Most Ambitious Campaign in Hospital’s History

Philanthropy has played an important role in the life of Shawnee Mission Medical Center from its beginning in the early 1960s. At every major expansion of the Medical Center facilities and major new programs, generous members of the community have stepped forward to lead and give.

In 2005, the Foundation for SMMC launched A Mission of Healing: the Campaign for Shawnee Mission Medical Center. This proved to be the most ambitious campaign in the Foundation’s history. The largest previous effort was a $2.5 million campaign completed in 1991. A Mission of Healing supported the building of the Critical Care Tower, Birth Center, and a host of associated programs with a goal of $30 million. As one of the largest philanthropic campaigns launched in

Johnson County, this was a lofty goal.

Through the outstanding leadership of Tim Rodgers, campaign chair, and the efforts of an exceptional committee, the campaign goal was surpassed at the end of 2012. Individuals, physicians, foundations, corporations, and SMMC associates stepped forward with generous gifts and commitments with one aim: to improve the health of our community through the mission of SMMC. Even though the campaign focused on expanded facilities, technology, and programs, the real beneficiaries are the over 200,000 persons who come to SMMC for care each year.

The Health Care Foundation (HCF) of Greater Kansas City awarded the Foundation for SMMC $80,000, to launch the Community Care Project at SMMC. The HCF is dedicated to providing leadership, advocacy, and resources to eliminate barriers and promote quality health for the uninsured and underserved in our

community. The Community Care Project will support patients who use the emergency department (ED) as their primary source of health care and help connect them to resources that can better serve their long-term needs. This is SMMC’s first time to receive a grant from the HCF.

Breast Center Art EventSMMC’s Focus on Breast Cancer Art Exhibit on October 19, 2012 commemorated SMMC’s Women’s Center’s20th Anniversary. Our art show included an exhibit of our Faces of Breast Cancer portrait collection andentries from a breast cancer-focused photography contest for high school students. More than 200 people attended.

In his long and distinguished career on the SMMC Medical Staff, Dr. Zamierowski has touched the lives of thousands of people with outstanding and innovative care. Dr. and Mrs. Zamierowski continue to change lives by providing state-of-the-art simulation training for healthcare professionals through gifts to the Foundation.

Whole Heart AwardDr. Randy Sheridan was a recent recipient of the Foundation’s Whole Heart Award. The Whole Heart Award program is designed to give SMMC patients the opportunity to honor a caregiver for outstanding service. Dr. Sheridan is also a member of the Legacy of Healing Society (which honors individuals who have made generous gifts through their estate plan) and contributor to the A Mission of Healing campaign to expand our Women’s & Children’s Services at SMMC.

Tiny Tim Holiday Fantasy

The Tiny Tim Holiday Fantasy was held at the Overland Park Convention Center. Over $566,000 was raised to benefit children and families served at the Britain Center and NICU.

for Robotic Surgery was initiated by a significant gift from Dick and Barbara Shull in 2002. SMMC was the first hospital in the region to acquire the da Vinci Surgical Robotic System. Today the Medical Center performs the largest number of these procedures that promote quicker recovery, less blood loss, and better outcomes for patients. In 2012, 534 robotic surgeries were performed at SMMC by our 25 highly-qualified surgeons.

n The Foundation for SMMC has a 34 year history in helping to advance the healing mission of the Medical Center. In 1978 a small, dedicated group of community leaders came together with the vision that philanthropy could greatly assist in advancing Shawnee Mission Medical Center. Through their vision over $30 million has been raised in the past 7 years.

Camp Bluebird is a special camp sponsored by Shawnee Mission Medical Center for adults diagnosed with cancer. For three days and two nights campers have a unique opportunity to listen and learn about their own disease as well as the

experiences of others living with cancer. This unique healing experience is made possible by generous gifts of donors to The Foundation for Shawnee Mission Medical Center.
