GROSS INDECENCY: THE THREE TRIALS OF OSCAR WILDE | Apr. 12-May 5, 2013 Walking Shadow Theatre Company Minneapolis Theatre Garage (711 W Franklin Ave., Minneapolis, MN) By Moisés Kaufman. Directed by Amy Rummenie. At the height of his career, the Crown prosecuted Oscar Wilde for “gross indecency with male persons.” Despite two hit shows on the West End, the courtroom denounced Wilde’s art as immoral - forcing him to defend his works and life with characteristic wit and insight. Gross Indecency explores this true story with a text crafted from a wealth of eyewitness accounts. $15-$22 | walkingshadowcompany.org | 612.375.0300

Craig Johnson, who stars as Oscar Wilde, has directed or acted in over 150 productions in the last three decades. He won a 2011 Ivey Award for directing Street Scene for Girl Friday Productions, and the same year Lavender Magazine named him Theater Artist of the Year. Craig’s history with Oscar Wilde goes way back:

“ Oscar Wilde has been one of my favorite writers ever since my 10th grade English class read “The Importance of Being Earnest.” Actually, we listened to an audio recording featuring John Gielgud and Edith Evans which only added to the fun. Of course, it was the wit, language, comedy, and intellect that dazzled me. Only later did I find out about Wilde’s life story, the trials, the aftermath, and his brilliant, complex, and, at times, maddening character.”

When, I received my first party invitation with BYOB at the bottom a friend had to explain to me what it meant. I was shocked. Back home in Marseilles such a thing does not exist. But then I thought - this is America, land of freedom, home to Hollywood, Bogart, the Wild West and Vegas. Why not give it a try? Now, years later and many, many parties later, BYOB has evolved into BYOW. I love this concept. Everyone brings a bottle of wine, including me, and then I cook, first course served with this wine, second course served with a different wine, third course, well you get the idea. We laugh, we eat, and we drink into the wee hours. The next morning, it’s time to clean up. My French heritage kicks in when I realize that throwing away the bits of wine leftover in the bottles would be sacrilegious. So I start cooking Daube Provencal. Yes, a stew. Not just any kind of stew, but a sumptuous, velvety, wine-rich kind of stew. My mouth waters just thinking about it. So, BYOW my friends, and have a good time. As Bogie said, “The problem with the world is that everyone is a few drinks behind.” So I say, don’t be part of the problem, Bring Your Own Wine. Cheers!

Beef Daube Provencal (serves 4)

Preheat oven to 300°. Cook garlic in oil until fragrant. Add beef to pan; sprinkle with salt and pepper. Cook 5 minutes, browning on all sides. Remove beef and add wine to pan; bring to a boil, scraping pan to loosen browned bits. Add beef, carrot, and next 8 ingredients (through bay leaf), and bring to a boil. Cover and bake at 300° for 2 1/2 hours or until beef is tender. Serve over noodles.

Sanctuary’s ever changing menu reflects the eclectic, marvelous and sensuous creations of French Chef Patrick Atanalian. Come eat something delicious, beautiful and a little bit surprising! The restaurant is located at 903 Washington Avenue South in downtown Minneapolis near the Guthrie Theater and the Dome. Reserve your table online at sanctuaryminneapolis.com or by calling 612.339.5058.

PoetryABOVE GROUND BELOW GROUND

The Irish landscape is dotted with the remains of Neolithic settlements, burial grounds and ceremonial sites; its lore with the associated myths and legends. Above Ground Below Ground is the response of artist Elaine Leigh and poet Michael O’Dea to the irrepressible lure of this ancient culture. (See image and poem to right)

Artist Elaine Leigh researches Heritage and Pagan sites and Irish legends which she then transcribes into paintings incorporating themes related to superstition, legend and folklore She can be contacted at [email protected]

Michael O’Dea, a Dublin poet, is known for poems that are “…swift and spare, registering events, people, passions, memory and loss with a condensed energy.” (Vincent Woods). O’Dea’s Above Ground Below Ground poetry is inspired by Leigh’s paintings. A selection of the poems and images can be found at http://abovegroundbelowground.wordpress.com/

Above Ground Below GroundBy Michael O’Dea

I dug my fingers into the bog-soft soil,

saw the porter-black ooze rising to my wrist;

my arm ladle deep, shovel deep,

a ship’s mast;

my arm an oil drill groping inside the earth.

I felt the soft flesh of her belly, give of flesh;

the shock of it in my fingertips:

that pulse deep inside the earth.

And the pilgrim roots journeying downwards,

their divining tips tuned to the morse of her heartbeat.

When the weather permits, award-winning artist Joan (Joni) Finnegan can be found painting outdoors with her oils - en plein air - along the picturesque roadsides of southeastern Minnesota. “Right now my work focuses on studies from nature, revealing the softer side of the outdoor

world.” Joni explains. She invites the viewer to step into her art and surrender themselves to the emotion of that moment, be it landscapes, waterscapes, or quirky portraits of country chickens and animals.

An art lover her entire life, Joni owned and operated a custom frame shop and print gallery for several years where she also taught painting classes. Joni’s artistic journey has included working in a variety of art mediums - watercolors, acrylics, pastel, charcoal, oils and fabrics. She has published three books in the craft art field.

After retiring from the world of retail Joni moved with her husband to an acreage in the country. Here she has found inspiration to dedicate her time fully to exploring her creativity through painting, gardening and cooking. “At its deepest heart creativity is meant to serve and evoke beauty, and I believe there is beauty in everything. It is my humble dream to share the emotion of that beauty with the art that I create.” says Joni.

Joni continues to expand her art through studies and workshops with painting masters as well as teaching private lessons. Her award winning artwork has been published in magazines, newspapers, and books. Her paintings are widely owned both privately and in the corporate setting.

You can find Joni’s breathtaking art in numerous galleries and on her website at jonifinnegan.com as well as lanesboroarts.org, bluffcountryartistsgallery.org, crossingsatcarnagie.com and http://etsy.com/shop/jonifinnegan

This summer you can find Joan’s art (and meet Joan) at some of the art fairs in the area including the Stone Arch Festival in Minneapolis on June 15 and the Loring Park Art Fair in Minneapolis, August 3-4.

The American Artist SeriesBy Gail M. Weber

Last year Twin Cities TOSCA launched its first ever AMERICAN ARTIST SERIES. We selected one artist to represent each state. This is our second year and final installment of our 2012- 2013 American Artists Series.

Our goal has been to find artists across the country who excel in their work, are passionate about their art, and create art that we believe our readers will appreciate. We look for art that is visually beautiful, art that is emotionally or spiritually provocative or art that is intellectually challenging. We hope that you will experience joy, curiosity, surprise and more as you review the exquisite art in this section. I feel honored to have made the acquaintance of each and every artist in this section. It is thrilling to realize that our country is the home of this type of talent and that this talent belongs to such remarkable human beings.

Please let the artists know you appreciate their work. A simple email will do. And of course purchasing a work of art directly from its creator is also a great way to show your appreciation as well.

Teacher and painter Elizabeth B. Tucker began drawing and painting when her husband gave her an easel as a gift. Seeking a classical tradition, she studied at LAAFA and privately with Ryan Wurmser, Aaron Westerberg and Wei Lo.

Whether working in oils or in charcoal, Elizabeth is interested primarily in how

light moves and wraps around objects.

Elizabeth is a member of the Pasadena Society of Artists, the California Art Club, Women Painters West, and is the president of the Angeles Crest Art Guild. She has won several awards for her work.

There is a space deep within…Akashic. A place where memories of emotional experiences are full of colors, sounds, tastes and smells, heat- like an ancient postcard left behind. I paint that postcard.

I approach each painting as an experience, an opportunity to dissolve the illusion of separation between myself and Spirit. I look at inspiration as just the spark, a match stick. The match is struck, and is put to canvas. Once the fire has been lit I concentrate on fanning the flames it has sparked. It is just a matter of getting out of the way and giving it the space to grow and spread.

I truly feel that I did not choose to be an artist. It is the thread that weaves through the fabric of my life. Without art there is

no deep breathing, no peace, nor reward in life. Art for me is a dance. Through painting, I dance in a state of Oneness, that infinite place where time and self unite. I paint how my heart experiences the world. It is a window. I invite you to look in.

Associated Women in Arts, Oil Painters of America, and Women Painters of the Southeast. She has been juried into The Brush with Burden the past two years and was once more invited to participate in the Baton Rouge Arts League Spring Show for 2013.

Pat has studied art with internationally known artist, Elayne Kuehler. Her work is currently showing at the Elizabethan Gallery and soon will be on display at Beauregard Gallery, the Louisiana

Art and Artist Guild Spring Show at Independence Theater, and Women’s Hospital. Pat’s subject matter is a reflection of where she lives and her travels around the world with an emphasis on beaches of Hawaii and the Alabama Gulf Coast.

Capturing the spirit of the live figure is my passion. Each figure becomes a vehicle to express human states of emotion, stages of life, or levels of relationships. Eventually, each painting becomes part of a series, telling the story. This current series expresses struggle and passion: wintery cold—dark and somber to spring—sunshine and hope.

her artwork. Her works are exhibited and collected nationally and internationally.

Gina grew up in West Virginia, and spent summers in southern Italy with her family. Many of her resources for her paintings come from her travels. She has her studio in Reno, Nevada, as well as a studio in Italy for when she travels abroad. “My paintings express my interest in the wholeness of creation, and the ways in which we experience the universe. The elements blend into one another as I like to imagine that ‘concrete’ things could dissolve into space, or could be shot through with the energy of the universe.”

Mark Jordan, born and residing in Harrisburg Pennsylvania is a self taught artist, having practiced the craft since he was 12. Moving from drawing and realism as a youth to abstract as an adult gave him an appreciation for composition, shape, line and color, or lack there of. Working in Mixed Media on canvas and paper,

with practice and intense experimentation, all of Mark’s art is influenced by nature, contrast, architecture and industrialization. His work resides mostly in private collections. One of his goals in life is to create a wider appreciation for Abstract Art.

There’s a backend tale for most artistic renderings and when I’m asked about my painting style I reply, storytelling.

I spent several decades as a corporate writer and editor before returning full-time to painting, one of my earliest interests. The transition was quite smooth because both disciplines require high levels

of concentration, thought, preparation and creativity.

I’ve been fortunate both then and now to travel extensively and my paintings usually represent places I’ve been, people I’ve met and things I like. Watercolor is my primary medium. When a painting hits the mark, like a manuscript I’ve written, the feeling is exhilarating.

I’m crazy, I’ve heard, for painting in the mountains in the dead of winter, or for battling swarms of biting flies in summer. But I’m energized by the challenges and beauty of nature, by the dynamics of light, atmosphere and temperature in the Rocky Mountains and in the deserts of the southwest. The changes in weather that occur while I’m painting do not bother but thrill me. A storm welling on the horizon, gaining momentum and catching me in its fury fills me with exhilaration. Even the same location can time and again leave me with a sense of awe. Some days I work with

great energy, slapping paint with a palette knife, dripping turpentine and then pushing around the thinned paint or letting the drips create patterns of their own. Other days, I’m quieter, and my use of the palette knife is more controlled, as I attempt to honor the integrity of each stroke. I work on instinct more than thought, for instinct holds greater honesty and clarity.

I begin by painting the actual scene before me, but as the painting progresses I delve into the personality of the painting, itself. A three way dialogue forms between the natural scene, the painting, and me. Which one speaks loudest changes from moment to moment, and, if any one becomes dominant for too long, the work can fail. It is the balance between the three that keeps me engaged. My paintings are a direct response to my environment and to my existence in it.

Renae Schoeffel is a Virginia Beach based professional artist who began creating at an early

age. Her talent for painting was later realized through guiding children’s expression with paint on canvas. Currently, her art can be found in many countries across the world and has been featured in

West Elm home décor magazine, and on HGTV. Her technique of combining vibrant colors and an organic flow of movement in a unique design gives each piece its own distinction. She enjoys working closely with customers and creating a one of a kind original work of art that would perfectly compliment your home’s décor.

Jana Parkes believes that art nourishes and feeds our souls. Her artwork comes from a desire to inspire, and to connect with a universe that she believes is loving, joyful and alive.

She, like many other artists, feels that painting is an inner need and desire.

“Last year, for financial reasons, I got a job “to pay the bills”, but I found after awhile that I wasn’t happy. Actually, I felt depressed. After making some changes in my life, I’m now doing the artwork again. It’s what makes my life joyful and my heart grateful.”

Apayo Moore is a Yup’ik artist from Bristol Bay, Alaska. She grew up enjoying the company of salmon through commercial fishing and subsistence and learned her history of coexisting with the animals through Yup’ik stories. Her culture and lifestyle helped to foster her imagination and artistic style that vividly portrays the

traditional relationship of Yup’ik people and the land.

Apayo paints to share her love for her home and to inspire others to never stop fighting for what they believe in. Currently the future of her beloved salmon haven is at risk due to a proposed gold and copper mine known as the Pebble Project.

She lives in Bristol Bay with her husband and daughter and plans to advocate to protect Bristol Bay well after she is gone through her paintings.

Beyond Designs that Look GoodJulie Ann Segal and her Interior Design team at Metropolitan Interiors not only make spaces look good, they have a passion for making them feel good, too. They believe living environments should reflect the homeowner’s spirit and enhance their well-being.

Aspects of the design, extending beyond look, comfort or functionality, can support clients in different areas of their lives. Combining Interior Design and Feng Shui principles, the team’s goal is to create harmonious spaces – ones designed to be an expression of a client’s unique style, needs and desires.

After redesigning spaces, even with simple changes like artwork, accessories, window treatments or wall finishes – the space feels different. “I now have beautiful, welcoming rooms. Every visitor wants to stay; they feel comforted and refreshed,” remarks Kathy, one Metropolitan Interiors client.

Integrating Art – The Soul of a SpaceAs an art lover, Julie Ann appreciates how art can make a room. A piece’s color, texture, shape, history and the story it has to tell can work harmoniously with the design, and even work to enhance a client’s livelihood. Julie Ann notes, “It’s important

to be intentional about what kind of art you have, and where you place it. I want my clients to be surrounded by art that is nurturing to them.”

Often clients don’t know what art they like, or where to find pieces that fit. The team makes it easy to obtain it, like Mary, who says, “I am very particular about the art in my home. Julie Ann was truly in tune with me and found the perfect art. Working with a Designer, a whole new world of possibilities opens up.”

20 Years Exceeding ExpectationsMetropolitan Interiors’ design projects range from residential to commercial, and several have been showcased throughout the Twin Cities. Last year, Julie Ann and team celebrated 20 years in business. “I am so grateful for past clients who believed in me,” Julie Ann remarks, “from the time I started out at my dining room table to landing in the center of the action near International Market Square.”

The team has access to innumerable resources for products and inspiration, whether the client is looking for traditional, contemporary or transitional design. Whatever their style, Metropolitan Interiors strives to create a “wow factor”. And their commitment to clients goes deep; they truly value relationships,

Change Your Space, Change Your Life

“ It’s important to be intentional about what kind of art you have, and where you place it. I want my clients to be surrounded by art that is nurturing to them.”

and pride themselves on exceptional customer service every step of the way towards creating homes and businesses of their clients’ dreams.

“Julie Ann has a knack for figuring out what my tastes are, keeping within my budget, and helping me make my house a home. She’s helped me decorate three houses, and I will be a lifelong client,” comments Dana.

Accustomed to working with different design preferences and budgets, Metropolitan Interiors has, and continues to expand, its diverse product and furniture lines. If a client can’t find what they’re looking for, the team can help them find a custom piece that’s consistent with their vision. By traveling and seeking out trends and innovations, the team is always discovering new possibilities and solutions to common design challenges.

The Metropolitan Interiors team has helped clients come home to harmonious spaces again and again – spaces that go beyond looking good, to helping people feel good too. “We recommend Julie Ann and her staff whole-heartedly,” tells one couple. “We were very pleased with the ease and results of our collaboration.”

As Benjamin Franklin so fittingly observed “All that is certain in life is death and taxes.” Yet getting people to talk about taxes is far easier than getting them to talk about death and dying.

The month of April presents the perfect opportunity to give your family a tremendous gift and get your affairs in order. April 16, 2013 is National Health Care Decisions Day. It is a day dedicated to educating the public about the importance of advance planning for your health care.

A health care directive, sometimes referred to as a Living Will or Durable Power of Attorney for Medical Decisions, allows you to appoint another individual (known as an agent) to make medical decisions, including consenting to life-sustaining medical treatments, if you are unable to speak for yourself. A health care directive can also state your medical wishes in the event that you are no longer able to

speak for yourself. It is the perfect tool to ensure that every individual retains autonomy over his or her health care decisions throughout their life.

A health care directive is just one component of a comprehensive estate plan. It is important to have other documents in place, such as a power of attorney, to address financial issues that may arise if you are unable to communicate for yourself. National Health Care Decisions Day presents an occasion to review your estate plans with a qualified attorney and determine what documents are necessary to protect your health and financial interests. Susie King, an associate with Monroe Moxness Berg PA, represents clients in the areas of estate planning, guardianship/conservatorship, and probate and estate administration. She can be reached at 952-885-1297 or [email protected].
