And…all winter we have been

preparing spring surprises! Programs, new exhibits, special

events and bright ideas have been fermenting in our creative caldrons! We are impatient to see spring arrive, yet grateful for the planning time that winter afforded us. We are full of springtime excitement to be generating a trunkfull of new experiences and ad-ventures and embracing the spring philosophy, “spring is a new beginning.”

Major in March is our month long celebration of Dr. Seuss and on March 12th we will be hosting a full day of Scout programming including a display and four workshops. We have also been approved by the Girl Scout Council to be the site for a major exhibit in 2012 honoring the one hundredth year of Girl Scout-ing. We are excited and honored by this decision. March is Women’s History Month and our scout pro-gram is...All about women!

April is Child Abuse prevention month and we invite our visitors to wear blue throughout the month to show their awareness and prevention support. In April we offer a new twist in programming: In liege with WSKG-TV and Dinosaur Train - a PBS animated feature - we will be welcoming Buddy and the Dino-saur Family. Even now we are building a train!! This Dinosaur family travels with a great message – toler-ance of differences. April 15th is a milestone for us: our first ever Science Fair. It is open to everyone and prizes of savings bonds ($100; $75 and $50) have been generously donated by Visions Federal Credit Union. On April 17th, our Ahearn Playhouse will be

filled with music for and about children. Featured will be well known pianist Pej Reitz, soprano Stepha-nie Jensen-Moulton and mezzo soprano Julia Grella- O’Connell.

And, what is as fey as a day in May? Do save the May 14th date for a Fairy Tea, a whimsical, magical after-noon for all. Look through our Special Events, Free Programs and Scout Programs to see the details of all that is in store for you this spring at The Discovery Center!

If that is not enough-our Susquehanna River Trail opens soon. Complete with a running river, studies of the route from New York State to salt water Chesapeake Bay and a walk on canal boat with excit-ing oral local history tales. Imagine being a mule driver on the canal at age 7!

Also this spring we kick off our affiliation with the Wendy’s Walk for Kids, Steps for a Brighter Future. The Mission of the Wendy’s Walk for Kids is to assist programs whose purpose is to help children in the community realize their full potential, regardless of their life experiences and current circumstances. The goal is to raise funds which will be distributed equally to four organizations benefiting children: The Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, The Dis-covery Center, Area Boys and Girls Clubs and The Magic Paintbrush Project all of whom support efforts to help children in the Greater Binghamton Area. Do consider participating in the walk on June 26th and check our website for all the details.

Special Girl Scout Exhibit and Girl Scout Patch Workshop – March 12 In celebration of Women’s History month and the 99th birthday of Girl Scouts of America, we present Girl Scouts: A

Walk through Time. Visit our display of Girl Scout uniforms of yesteryear. Learn what it was like to be a scout in other

decades that were historically significant to women. What uniforms did you wear? What patches did you earn? Bring

the history of scouting to life with us! This exciting exhibit is brought to you by the History in Archives Committee of

Girl Scouts of NYPenn Pathways. Exhibit opens March 12th. A special Girl Scout history workshop will be offered in con-

junction to the display (see below) to earn a brand new heritage patch. See page 7 for details.

Spend the Day The Seuss Way! March 26th This will be the day that “from here to there, funny things are everywhere” as we honor Dr. Seuss’s birthday month with all things Seuss. The fun will begin with a healthy breakfast of green eggs and ham (and some of the yellow kind too!) in The Discovery Center’s Summersaults Café. Breakfast will be served from 10am-12pm with a reading of Dr. Seuss’s famous book “Green Eggs and Ham”. Breakfast tickets for eggs, ham, bagel and juice will be sold for $3 a meal with admis-sion. Food sales will continue with pizza and salad sold from 12-1pm for those who say eggs…“not here or there or anywhere!” Wear your craziest footwear for the day. “If you never did, you should. These things are fun, and fun is good.” and step into our “How Many Feet you Meet” silly shoes parade at 1pm (mismatched

shoes will do the trick!) At 2pm…don’t be late! A Free with admission performance is on stage in The Discovery Cen-ter’s Ahearn Playhouse with S.T.A.R. (Southern Tier Actors Read) performance of “All Things Seussical” Proceeds for the day will be donated to support the Wendy’s Walk for Kids.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month April is National Child Abuse Prevention month. Show your support for bringing awareness to the prevention of child abuse and neglect during the week of April 11-15th by wearing blue to The Discovery Center as you board the Fun Ex-press for our week of special programming. You can wear blue clothes or shoes, a blue ribbon or even paint your nails blue! Family Violence Prevention Council will have tips available on keeping children safe. Blue ribbons will be avail-able for a free will donation to benefit the Family Violence Prevention Council. We want to see a sea of blue at The Discovery Center!!!

All Aboard as we Swing into Spring! Jump on The Discovery Center Fun Express during the school holiday break for sensational activities! All activities be-gin at 11am and continue until 1pm and are FREE with museum admission. Monday, April 11th – The first stop for The Discovery Center Fun Express is at the farm for Moo and More! It’s Farm Animal Day at The Discovery Center. Get a close up look at baby chicks, bunnies and more. Tuesday, April 12th – All Aboard for Wild Weather Day! Are you ready for April showers? Visit with National Weather Meteorologist Eric Heden and try some exciting weather experiments! Wednesday, April 13th – It’s time to transfer to the Hogwarts Express at Platform 9¾ for Harry Potter Day! Help Harry Potter defeat Lord Voldemort by learning some new spells and mix up a batch of special potions! Thursday, April 14th – Toot, Toot! WSKG and The Discovery Center present a special Dinosaur Train event! Visit the Museum for a day of family-fun! Dinosaur Train activities and a meet and greet with Buddy the T-Rex are free with admission. Friday, April 15th – You won’t want to miss our next destination because it’s Science Fair Day at The Discovery Center. Young scientists show off their projects at this first annual Science Fair. Judging and prizes to be awarded. Saturday, April 16th – The final stop of The Discovery Center Fun Express…the Annual Easter Egg Hunt and Bunny Hop! Put on your Easter bonnet and join the Easter Bunny for an egg-citing day of activities. DJ Johnny Only will lead our Easter Parade and Bunny Hop beginning at 1pm until 2:30pm. The museum gallery will close at 2pm for the Easter Bunny to hide eggs and will reopen at 2:30pm for the Easter Egg Hunt.

“Halfway Down”: A Concert of Songs about Childhood and Disability Noted soprano and scholar of disability studies Stephanie Jensen-Moulton, acclaimed mezzo-soprano Julia Grella O’Connell, and beloved pianist Pej Reitz will present a concert of classical songs that share the themes of childhood and disability on April 17 at 3pm at The Discovery Center’s Ahearn Playhouse. The program will include pieces by Johannes Brahms and Charles Ives, as well as a group of rarely-heard songs by the autistic savant “Blind Tom” Wiggins, a musical prodigy born into slavery. The concert is open to the public. Tickets are $25. Proceeds will benefit The Discovery Cen-ter’s cultivation of programs to provide opportunities for children with special needs. About the Artists: Soprano Stephanie Jensen-Moulton’s singing has been praised by the New York Times as “brilliant and confident.” She has performed in opera, concert, and musical theater throughout the United States. Also a noted scholar on music, gender, and disability studies, she is an Assistant Professor of Musicology at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York, where she is also a Research Fellow at the Hitchcock Institute for Studies in American Mu-sic. Mezzo-soprano Julia Grella O’Connell is a singer and scholar whose work has focused on salon and art music by nineteenth-century Italian composers, serious and popular music by Victorian women, and music by Italian composers who immigrated to Victorian Britain and Ireland. Pianist Pej Reitz is widely acclaimed as a soloist, educator, and col-laborative musician. She has performed as a recitalist and accompanist throughout the United States, Europe, South America, and Asia, including concerts in Graz, Austria, Tokyo, Japan, and Birmingham, England.

tea and woodland treats of all kinds. You’ll meet some real fairies and learn about their magical world. The magic follows you home

Arbor Day Celebration! Take care of our Earth and plant a tree! The Discovery Center will observe Arbor Day on Saturday, April 30th with a day long celebration of all things green!

Learn how to conserve energy, shrink your carbon footprint and enjoy the great outdoors. Dare to be a force of nature

and help save the rainforests! Feathered Kisses Aviary Sanctuary will give a special presentation of parrots, macaws

and other birds of the rainforest throughout the day. Meet The Discovery Center’s own Mealy Amazon Parrot, “Zazou”

and learn what products come from the rainforest. All activities are FREE with admission and will take place from

11:00am to 3:00pm. All children will receive a FREE white pine or spruce tree to take home and plant for Arbor Day.

ARTS PARTNERS NEWSARTS PARTNERS NEWS 2010/2011 ARTS PARTNERS’ MATCHING GRANT AWARDS

$13,463 in grants was awarded by Arts Partners in October to seven projects in Broome and Tioga Counties. All these wonderful projects meet strict guidelines for quality arts-in-education residency work in schools pre-K through 12th grade. This year’s awards: Mac Arthur Elementary School: “I’ll Fly Away - The Great Migration: An African Journey Told in Rhythms, Poetry, and Collage”, Seton Catholic Central High School: “Writing Excellence Through the Power of Story”, Ben Franklin Elementary School: “Folktale Fantasia II, Stories in Motion”, Candor Elementary School: “Good Vibrations”, Newark Valley Middle School: “Newark Valley: History through an Artist’s Eyes”, Binghamton High School: “Loving Literacy”, and Vestal High School: “Creating a Mindful Mosaic.”

Arts Partners is a Local Capacity Building Program of the New York State Council on the Arts, administered by The Dis-covery Center, and made possible with funds from The New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency. NEW PROGRAM - Monday Fundays! Spring is a time of high visitation by school groups so, be-ginning Monday, March 7th through Monday, June 27th, The Discovery Center will open just for toddlers (birth through preschool age) on Mondays from 10am to 3pm*. Big size fun will be had by our littlest friends as they ex-plore the museum and make new friends with out the crowds that can sometimes overwhelm our littlest visi-tors. Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy in our Somersaults Café or outside in The Story Garden for some fun in the sun! Special programming will be offered on Mondays during the month of March free with admission! *Note: Mu-seum will be open to everyone on Monday, April 11 due to the school holiday.

Learn to be Brain Smart® with parent child workshops

that will combine fun with Brain Smart® parenting strate-gies. Dr. Seuss will be our theme as we celebrate March, Dr. Seuss’s birthday month, by combining playful learning with Conscious Discipline® models proven to decrease problem behaviors and turn conflict into cooperative learning opportunities. Conscious Discipline®, a compre-hensive social and emotional intelligence classroom and parenting program, that empowers both adults and chil-dren, is based on current brain research, child develop-ment information and developmentally appropriate prac-tices. Video workshops for adults that outline the seven basic skills of discipline as defined by Becky Bailey, PhD., an award winning author, renowned teacher and interna-tionally recognized expert in childhood education and developmental psychology, will be available for viewing every Monday from 11-11:45am in The Discovery Center’s Reading Theater during the month of March. Learn the tools you need to put positive discipline to work for you, attend a free parent/child workshop using the basic skills for “Brain Smart Management” that can be applied to any environment where children are encouraged to become competent problem solvers.

Tunes & Tales – Tuesdays 11am Join us in Books and Beyond for Story Time every Tuesday at 11am. Enjoy guest readers each week, as we go on a reading adventure. Stay to do a story related activity and bring a snack or lunch to enjoy in our Somersaults café.

Healthy Beginnings – Tuesdays 1pm Let’s get moving! Our new hands on program will teach young children and their families about healthy habits and nutrition for life. Learn how to make healthy snacks and meals to fuel your body right, play games and get your body grooving!

Little Hand Science – Wednesdays at 1pm There’s nothing young fingers like to do better than to explore the world around them! This science exploration program will have your child delving into science concepts about the world around us. March 2- Dinosaur Dig—fossil search. March 9- Quick Sand—what’s it like to be in it? Center Kids Our new theme - Imagine That was inspired by the exhib-its at the Discovery Center and things going on right in our own community. Center Kids meets the second Saturday of the month (March will meet on the 3rd Saturday) from 1-3 pm in front of the Burlington Coat Factory in the Oak-dale Mall. March 19 - Good for You It’s time to get off the couch and do some activities that are good for you! Try out our fitness test and learn all about healthy eating. Join us for an extra special Taekwondo demonstration at 1pm. April 9 - EcoKids Earth avengers on deck! Earth Day is a time to remember and appreciate nature and learn ways to protect our environment. Plant some seeds to take home, make a scrapbook using recycled materials and learn why recycling is important for our planet. May 14 - Inside the Locker Room Do you ever wonder what it takes to get ready for the big game? Join us as we learn about baseball and hockey, and what it takes for the Binghamton Mets and Senators to stay in shape and suit up for the game. Meet the mascots at 2pm!

Eco-Kids Story Book Contest Win a DC In-school program for your classroom! Classrooms in grades K-6 are invited to create a collaborative class-room story book to become a permanent part of our newest exhibit, Eco-Kids. Choose a nature related theme; mam-mals, insects, birds, leaves, trees or eggs and get to work! Students should research, write, and illustrate part of the story for a collaborative project. All story books will be on display during our Spring Science Week in which guests can vote on their favorite story. Winning classroom in each category will win an hour long school program of your choice brought right to your school! Please register your classroom’s participation with an e-mail to [email protected] and receive all rules and regulations. All books must be submitted by April 2nd, 2011 and will be on display the week of April 11th-15th.

Science Fair 2011 Calling all young scientists! Mark your calendar for April 15th and be part of the science buzz here at the museum. Stu-dents in two grade categories, K-2 and 3-5, will have an opportunity to showcase their science projects here at the mu-seum, compete for savings bond prizes, and share their learning with our visitors and celebrity judges. It is our hope that the Fair will help instill an appreciation for science in our everyday lives, recognize and commend scientific accom-plishments, and heighten student interest in science fields. Prizes in each category are savings bonds: 1st place- $100, 2nd place $75 and 3rd place $50. All participants will receive a certificate of participation. Whether your child has an in-terest in insects, chemistry, or the movement of the planets, our Spring Science Fair will be a great way to showcase their achievements. The day will also feature hands-on science experiments, activity stations and presentations throughout the day. Deadline to register is March 19th. From workshops, performances, and sleepovers, we are the place for exciting scout adventures. We can also come to your meeting location and bring a workshop right to you! Don’t see a badge or Journey that you’re working on? We will work with you to achieve your scout goals. You must pre-register at least two weeks in advance for our workshops. A Sleepover at the Museum! Imagine sleeping near our

fire truck or in our Giant Market! What does the museum look like when the sun goes down? Come find out! You arrive at 6pm with dinner awaiting you. The night is filled with museum play, a badge workshop, and fun! You bring the scouts and we do all the rest! Cost is $23 per scout or $28 for a scout/mother pair. You will receive a packing list upon confirmation. March 26th April Fool’s Snooze - Learn the fun and science of magic tricks just in time for April Fool’s Day. You won’t believe your eyes as you learn some fun tricks to amaze your friends. April 29th Martial Arts Snooze - In honor of Women’s Safety Month, we’ll see an exciting demo from Binghamton Univer-sity’s Tae Kwon Do Demonstration Team . You’ll learn ways to be self-confident, try some Tae Kwon Do moves all while having fun and being active. May 20th Butterfly Magic Snooze - Learn all about the magic of the transformation of a caterpillar to a butterfly. Whoo’s that Living in the Tree? - March 5th, 1:30-3:30pm, $9/ scout. Explore the amazing eating habits of a bird of prey as we follow an owl. Scouts will be using measuring, predicting, and observation skills through the study of owl habitats and their digestive systems. We’ll get hands-on with ‘owl puke’ to see just what your owl ate. Earn a special Owl Prowl fun patch. Passport to Fun - April 2nd, 10:30am- 12pm, $9/scout. Inspired by the new Journey book A World of Girls, we’ll have an adven-ture to visit new places, learn how to say hello in different lan-guages, and fill our passport along the way with stickers. Whoo’s that Living in the Tree? - March 5th, 1-3pm, $9/scout. See full description in Brownie Section Local Lore - April 2nd, 1:30-3pm, $9/scout Includes badge. Travel back in time to learn about the people that founded the Southern Tier and how the area became settled. Using primary source documents and artifacts, we’ll explore businesses that started in the Binghamton area. Handle EJ shoe factory tools, put milk bottles in chronological order, and learn what the high-est paying job was in the year 1879. Evaluate how each busi-ness treated their workers and girls ultimately choose which company they would choose to work for. Eco-Action - April 9th, 2-4pm, $9/scout. Go green in honor of Earth Day and learn how to make a difference for our planet by making some simple changes. Visit our Solar Club House to learn how solar energy works and take a stroll through our River Walk to see how all water on our planet is connected and how our own backyard is connected to the Chesapeake Bay. We’ll make an upcycled (turning old things that you’d throw away and turn it into something else) denim purse for you to take as a reminder to think of new ways to use your old things.

M-F, 3-6pm at a cost of $60 per week.

Discovery Kids Pre School All the A,B,Cs & 1,2,3s of Learning Fun!

Separate programs for 3 and 4 year olds. Half

day programs with the option of a full day. Follows the Binghamton City Schools’ calendar. Free 4 yr. old UPK for residents of BCSD. Fully licensed with a professionally trained staff Early drop-off available.
